Brando had his surgery today and I am in a quandary

Brando had his patella surgery today at about 10am, he has been home since 6pm, and he has moved once, he hasn't had anything to eat or drink or been out since 8am. He is sleeping, and from everything I've read and everyone I've spoken to his pain should be excruciating, but if he is sleeping he is resting. Should I try to give him water and or food? Or just leave him alone, if he had stayed at the vets he would have been left alone.

Deb - I haven't been thru a surgery like this, so hopefully others who have will chime in.  I do remember the first night when we brought Sassy home from her spay (she came home the day of surgery).  She was pretty out of it and slept the entire evening/night with no problems.  I had water nearby, but not food until morning.  She wasn't even interested in the water.  If he's still medicated, this might be the best time for him to get some good rest.  If he starts stirring, you could always try to see if he wants any water, but I'm guessing since he hasn't had anything to eat or drink all day, he won't need to go potty real soon.

If it were me in a lot of pain after a big surgery like that, I know I would want to sleep as long and as much as I could. As long as he doesn't get dehydrated, I think it'll be okay to just leave him.

Hope the recovery is super quick!!

I think it's good that he's getting some rest. Heal quickly, Brando!

I'm not sure either, but feel better Mr. Brando!

    Thanks guys
He did stir and sat up so I offered some chicken and he turned his head, then some water and the same. I will leave him alone.

Deb you know how to tell if he's getting dehydrated right?

If you give anything you may need to give him some chammomile tea in a little syringe.  It's good for the tummy and even if it's the ONLY thing it will be ok.  (in other words it won't make him sick to his stomach if it's the only thing you get down him).

He may be a bit angry -- and he doesn't want to do anything to break his own self-imposed sedation.  They CAN will themselves to sleep. That's not a bad thing at this point.

You should be ok letting him be solitary til tomorrow, but I wouldn't let it go further.  Probably if it were ME, I would give him moisture in his mouth tonight (at least a bit of chammomile or water).  Even if you get a syringe or two of water down him it wont make him pee ... it will just keep him hydrated.

He's a smart boy -- he knows if he drinks/eats he'll have to get up.  So let him heal tonight but the story has got to be different in the morning.

You know you can put the tip of a baby syringe behind his canine tooth with his mout SHUT and just squirt gently - it will put water in his mouth so he can swallow -- just do it slowly - a few drops at a time and he will likely swallow it.

Another thing you might consider is that if he was hooked up to IV fluids during surgery (most of those type surgeries are on fluids) he is unlikely to become dehydrated overnight.  You can offer him ice chips to lick on at his leisure.  For the most part I would let the little guy sleep it off & see how he is doing in the morning.

If he had an IV then he'd have a shaved 'ankle' on one of his front paws and Bevo is absolutely right.  (However, if he'd had an IV he prolly would be wanting to go wee!!)

I am not sure what to suggest as you have gotten some good suggestions but wanted to say, feel better soon little Brando!  Hang in there Deb!  He will be fine.

    Hi Deb,
Quick healing thoughts for Brando, I'm sorry the rest didn't work out.

Agreeing with Callie, just keep an eye on his dehydration by pinching up the skin at the back of his neck, if it stays up, dehydration is setting in, it should come back to the neck quickly if hydrated. Fluids tend to stay within the body even after surgery a little so I would continue to offer some fluids tonight. I'm sure tomorrow will be a better day....sleep is good for healing.

I know your worried but I know everything will be fine

JAMIE!! I missed you woman! How are you feeling?
He had a terrible night, but this morning he was pretty alert, I was able to get some chicken and broth down he  was really hungry.
Thanks so much for the help guys.

He is very alert and obviously in extreme discomfort. I'm happy I got some food and water down, but he still hasn't come out to pee.
He has to be back at the vet's to get his bandage off at 9:15am.
I am going to tell her to give him a pain injection before she starts working on him, to be w/o pain meds this long is just too long, I really don't care what the instructions say no pain killer lasts this long.

Glad to hear Brando got some goodies in his belly!
Generally the first day is the worst and having just been through sergery myself I didn't want to do anything but sleep and keep the pain meds coming!!

I'm sure your vet will fix lil Brando up and my thoughts are with you guys this am
