What breed has your dog been mistaken for?

If you can believe it, a few of my Beagles have been mistaken for pit bull mixes Confused One because he is blueticked, and JQP is just not familiar with that color. He also has a correct head (i.e. not snippy) & that's also the reason the others occasionally get mistaken for pit mixes. People see the squarer heads w/ "fuller" muzzles and automatically think pit bull. Ridiculous.

Bevo has been mistaken for a greyhound.  I also had a cashier at petsmart argue that he was a pit bull.  Not really sure how a doberman can be mistaken for a pitt bull...

My favorite has to be when people ask "Is that her mom?" when I have Bevo & Schatzi out together.  Ummm, not exactly....Bevo is a dobe, Schatzi is a dachshund.

Not too much, I'd probably get that more often if they were sables. I have had one person say "little lassies".

Get that all the time too.  They I tell them nope his name is Timmy.  It gets them really confused.  My breeder has all the colors.  She says that the sables get the mini collie, the bi-blacks get the BC label, the Tri's, merles, and the bi-blues get the mini-aussie label.

One of my fosters, a dark blue ACD, was called a wolf by some kids 'cause he "had crazy eyes" (the kids also screamed bloody murder when they saw him come around the corner and didn't see he was on lead).

Maggie's been mistaken for an Aussie and one person said she looked just like the dalmatian/husky mix they had as a kid. One of the people who thought she was an Aussie also argued that point with me.  Some people "correct" me when I say she's an ACD/BC mix and explain she can't be ACD, she *has* to be a heeler. LOL!

Just today someone though Ziva was "one of those long haired Jack Russells". :) JRT is the most common guess I get for her, but most people have no idea so they ask me what she is (a few want to know what breed she is as they assume she's purebred something!). I generally say she's a Corgi/JRT/BC/etc. mix. Big Smile

For Honor, people usually just want to see the "baby husky" or the "husky puppy".  After a long-winded saga about the breed, then they usually want to know if I meant Siberian Husky rather than Alaskan Husky. *sigh*

I've only had one person nail her breed on sight, the manager of the Pet Supplies Plus store near my house.  I was so impressed!

My favorite mistaken-breed moment was when a couple came up to us in Petsmart, and wanted to cuddle the "baby Alaskan Malamute". Indifferent  Heck, mals are bigger than Honor at 6 weeks, much less 7 months, lol.

Emma appears to be a pure bred PRT. I don't know her true lineage, BUT.... The AKC agrees with me that she appears to be pure (either that, or they like my money... whatever!). I've gotten all sorts of crazy breed ID's for her. ACD, Pit Bull, Beagle, and Brittany Spaniel are among the highlights. Rat Terrier has been tossed out a few times, too. She has button ears, though, not *** ears, so I dunno.

I like my Grandma's breed ID the *best*! She always called Emma "one of them Jack Daniels dogs". I loved it!

Kaiser- belgian sheepdog and black lab/gsd mix. whatever, i don't care but i hate it when people argue with me that he's not purebred, 'cause GSDs are black and tan only. ok.

Wyatt- pit bull, bullmastiff puppy, viszla

Sofie is a wolf. Right. All 49 lbs of her.  Oh, and Ole is a German Shepherd. He weighs the same as Sofia and they both have curly tails.Indifferent

More often people look at Sofia, a little afraid and say, with a big pause first, staring at her...."What kind of dog is that?"

And people look at Ole and because he's square, with no elongation (elkhounds are not speed dogs) they know he's not a sled dog, but they just don't know WHAT he is! So they say, "What kinda husky is THAT?"

I love being able to say, "That's a Norwegian Elkhound, they hunt moose." Then I see their eyes get big when they think about a smallish dog like Ole hunting a huge moose!Smile

Several times this week, though, people my age and older have come in and have been overjoyed to see a Norwegian Elkhound. There used to be a lot of them up here and the inevitable comment is, "I had the BEST dog when I was a kid and he looked just like Ole!"

Amanda: I LOVE that Bevo and the dachshund get mistaken for the same kind of dog. That TOTALLY cracks me up!!

It either seems that people know exactly what Kirby is or have no clue.  Those with no clue usually approach with the, Oh what a cute puppy often quickly followed with what is he and how big is he going to get.  They often seem surprised when I tell them he is full grown.  I also notice a lot of times when I tell people he's a papillon the first thing they ask is what mix that kind of dog is.  Guess they figure with his smaller size he must be part of the designer dog craze.

On the opposite end, it seems people who know what he is have it down pat and often go on to say what cute butterfly ears he has.  I never really have a problem with people who have no clue what breed he is.  I'm more than willing to brag about my baby. XD

Most people just call mine Jack Russells, which I don't get too upset over considering all the name confusion.  If they ask what kind, I say Parson Russell Terriers and then explain that they are the original English version of the JR.  Rose once got mistaken for a schnauzer.  I can sort of understand since she has a bit of a beard and eyebrows...but not much.  Someone asked if Colton was a JR mix once...I said "nope, hes a purebred, champion Russell."  Overall, they don't get mixed up with other dogs too much.

Legend's been called a Newfie before..understandable...maybe...if you're only looking at his face (he's a little jowly) ..and ignore the upright ears..and the purple tongue...and the fact that he's about 100 lbs lighterStick out tongue

He's also been called a bear...because bears are so often walked around on leash...Stick out tongue
