    Do you wash your hands.......?

     Hi, Everyone,

"Don't forget to wash your hands after touching your dog." I have been occasionally given the above command/advice by my family or close relatives since I have got my 1st and the only pet home. It seems like if I don't, I might transmit some kinds of diseases to them.

I do wash my hands after cleaning up his wastes, and before eating, but not EVERY TIME after every contact with my own pet!   I pet him, cuddle with him hundreds times everyday, I will not comply with that advice, will you? just curious.

Uh, no. I touch my dogs way too much for that to be at all practical!

LOL No. This same issue came up over the holidays on our visit home.

I wouldn't wash my hands after petting my dogs any more than I would my toddlers LOL.

Actually I wash my hands whenever I touch strange dogs, I'm very crazy about that. But my girl and I share ice cream cones so I'm not worried, lol

Sorry - no.  I wash my hands if they accidentally come in contact with raw meat Ick! but if I washed them every time I touched Max I'd be washing them all day.

We live in a completely germ-o-phobic society.  Those are the same people who carry the towel they dried their hands on in a public restroom over to the door -- open the door with the towel and then throw it on the floor for someone ELSE to have to pick up!!

And these people wonder why they are sick all the time?  Because they never give themselves the opportunity to BUILD immunity.  Yes, wash your hands as indicated above but it would be a very lonely world otherwise.

I only think of this when I visit people who have dogs that live outdoors exclusively, who are not vetted for the majority of things I would vet for (you know, more than just the yearly required shots), and who are not on heartworm preventative (which addresses the other worms, too.)  I think there are too many people who still treat their dogs that way - it's been an eye opener being here in AZ and seeing how the baseline standards for treating and managing dogs is so different than in New England.

I don't wash my hands every time I touch the dog, but I wash my hands pretty often throughout the day.  I used to have bad allergies and even now, if I touch the dog or cat and then rub my eyes, they get a little red.  So it's something I need to do, but I wouldn't do it because of germs or fear that I would transmit some bizarre strain of human-to-dog pneumonia or something!

If I'm fixing dinner or getting ready to sit down to eat, yes because I don't want fur in my food.  lol..  but otherwise, only if the dog has a nasty feeling coat.  Or I just recently put flea treatment on them in the summer, then I will to make sure I don't accidentally ingest any of it until they've had a bath.

Only when she needs a bath. Smile

I would be washing my hands all day if that was the case! I only wash my hands after petting her if I'm about to prepare food and other things that require my hands to be cleanSmile

I do not wash my hands after petting my dogs. I would be at the sink 8 hours a day! LOL My dogs lick my face (and occasionally their tongue slips in my mouth!) LOL We might get sick from each other, but we haven't yet.

DH washes his hands every time he touches the dogs... Geeked

Ha Ha, FourIsCompany.....same here!! In fact, if I yawn around my girls without covering my mouth, they're right up in there!!!! So, um, no I don't wash my hands every time either.....just when getting ready to cook, or eat, etc.

I am frequently kissing Joey on his head, always petting him when he's within arms length and just generally sharing the same air we breathe so what could he have that I wouldn't get even if I did wash my hands?  Eh, did that make sense?  He sometimes likes to bring over a big ole mouth full of drooly water and plant it right in my lap.  If it gets on my bare legs or my hands, I just wipe it on my clothes and carry on.  But like the other replies here, if I'm done visiting a strange dog or getting ready to eat, yes I wash my hands.

Ummmmmmm, I have SIX large dogs.  My hands would be like raw meat if I washed them every time I touched one of the dogs!  Strange dogs, dogs that feely less than clean, if I'm prepping food or going to eat, yeah, then I'll wash my hands.  Otherwise...what's a few germs between friends?
