Yep, guns are all but illegal in Chicago and Washington DC.  I wonder how the crime rate is in those fine cities?  Wink

Seriously! It was just across from DC in Virginia that I had a gun pulled on me while driving at 10 PM on a Tuesday. Sadly, the cop who was filing the report didn't think the incident was too big a deal since I wasn't shot or shot at.Sad

I was also in a 7-11 in NE DC and a guy came in who had been shot in the back of the leg. He apparently got caught with someone elses lady friend and that didn't go over so well... He was also high as a freaking kite... I was about 16 at the time, so that whole scene left an impression!

    20. Only a government that is afraid of its citizens tries to control them.
    24. The American Revolution would never have happened with gun control.

    nice!

....and this is why it is impossible to have a intelligent debate on gun control. Just because people can die or be killed by practically anything, does that mean there is no argument to be made for gun control? I fail to see a connect between controlling guns and making swimming pools illegal. Seems like a stretch, but maybe that's just me.

we already have gun control in the US. it just doesnt work. one section of the population deemed ineligible to own a gun is...

Those convicted of crimes punishable by imprisonment for over one year, except state misdemeanors punishable by two years or less.

however, i think you will find that many people who have been imprisoned for more than one year still find ways to obtain guns.

you have to be over 21 to legally purchase a handgun, and over 18 to legally purchase a rifle or shotgun. those two punks who shot up the high school in colorado... were they old enough to own any of the guns they had?

seems like a stretch to think more gun control will make a difference to anyone (except for law abiding citizens), but maybe that is just me.

Give all the lectures you want to to a 3--5 year old...IMO given that a 5y/o shot his twin brother yesterday while playing with the babysitter's BF's gun (that both adults knew about)...I'd say that kids don't always listen to what they are told...and because they are kids they don't deserve to die for it.

What you think a child "knows" at that age and what actually sticks esp around their peers...are usually two totally different things. And that applies to guns, pools, dogs, etc.

I choose not to carry a gun, but until the Constitution is changed, I will support the Second Amendment.  Guns are a lot like Pit Bulls.  Everyone is scared of them when they are in the wrong hands, yet banning them will not keep them out of the wrong hands...

And, to be honest, I think it's a good idea for every household to have a weapon of some sort, for when the bad guys get here with the dirty bomb which they will inevitably obtain.  You may all have to protect your food, your water, and your lives.  Never say never.  A good boy (or girl) scout is prepared.

I love this "refresher course"!  As a gun owner, I love having the right to bear arms!  I just want a bigger ARM!  lol

besides.. the UK has gun control so what do punks do? they use DOGS to mug people. so they ban "dangerous" dogs.... wow that sure fixed those criminal types eh? no. they moved on to legal breeds. so what next? ban knives? forks? spatulas? how bout addressing the ones abusing these implements eh? how come when a man rapes a woman they dont chop off his you know what? he used it as a weapon after all!!!

Yea, really!  My daughter's school told them they are no longer allowed to play w/ those little paper footballs (kids make) because they're dangerous.  Me & my DH, were like "WHAT??"  I told her "oh, so a sharp pencil or pen isn't dangerous?"  She's  11, was 10 at the time, and she says "yea, really!"  Come on, people are getting just a little out of control!  Although, there must have been enough ruckus from parents, because they're allowed to do it now, just not in the classrooms, they have to do it outside at recess.  What point is that?  I have no idea, I thought the whole game was for those rainy days when you had to stay in, to give ya something to do...dummy me, I guess!

I live out in the sticks....it would take the deputies forever to get here.......so, we are armed.....

I also have a Glock in the car......

My Dad, a retired military man showed me how to handle and use a gun....nothing to it....

     OK, give up your car!

I agree with everything in this list.  I don't currently own a gun, but I grew up with them (so did DH). We never killed anyone and thoroughly respect them.  I may get a gun in the future.  I would like to target shoot and I can and WILL defend my sons, DH and home if any bad guys get by Gypsy.

kaf, if you were on that crowded EL train in the morning rush hour and some drug crazed nut started firing a gun at everyone wouldn't you feel better if some person/persons with a conceal carry pulled his/her gun and shot that person down and ended all of the horror? Just something to think about.

Awesome list Billy..... Not currently a gun owner, but a big time supporter of the right to bare arms.

hmmm, well of course.  If there was a threat and someone removed that threat... I would be happy.

My uneasiness with concealed carry, has nothing to do with my feelings on our rights.  I do believe in the right to bear arms...I just don't trust a lot of peoples judgment, and that is what makes me uneasy.

It has been interesting to read everyones reasons for owning guns and/or support for the right to own guns.

Applying the same logic in the above article to swimming pools would suggest that swimming pools should be made illegal as well.

Adolf Hitler thought the same thing.  A major difference between him and you is he had the power to make it happen.  And he did.  How did that work out?

How long does it take the police to get to your house in order to protect you?

I sleep better at night knowing that myself and many of my neighbors are armed and I would not sleep as well if only the police and the bad guys had all the guns.

I think we all should have the right to protect ourselves our families and our property...the bad guys will always find a way, whether guns are legal or not.

It seems to me that the main reason being expressed it a need to protect one's self and secondly a sense of exercising one's constitutional right. I am curious where this need for protection comes from. Does the average American living in an average community feel like they need to have a gun for protection? Are locked doors or alarm systems not adequate to give a sense of security? Do you chose to carry a concealed weapon because you feel threatened or in danger in public? Is there some paranoia?

"easy access to guns and society's acceptance of violence are part of the problem in the United States."

Do you agree at all with this statement? Does the fact that soooo many other people own guns have an influence on your choice to own a gun? Do you wish less people carried guns (excluding you of course!)? Does is concern you that the US leads in gun deaths?

I am asking these questions because I am genuinely interested in the 'thinking' behind guns. I agree that banning guns does not solve the problem, so I am not arguing that.
