What would you do?

    What would you do?

Ugh as if I really needed this right now!!!
Last week my gardeners came like usual. I was out running errands and I left the dogs in the house. When I got home I let them out back to potty and got my daughter a snack. When I went to let them back in, they were gone! Turns out the gardeners didn't latch the gate. It's never been a problem before, they know we have dogs and they are always good about making sure the gate is latched. Bear came home a while later but I haven't seen Paco since! We looked over the neighborhood several times, put up flyers, ad in the newspaper, checked the pound, you name it!
I am going to call the gardeners and tell them what happened and that we are really upset. Should we fire them and find someone new?
What would you do in my situation?

    FIRE THEM. [:@]

ETA. if they put your daughter's life in jeopardy, you'd fire them, right?  why should your dog's lives be any less valuable?

in the meantime, i really hope you find your other dog.  poor little pup[:(]

OMG!! Absolutely FIRE them.  And good luck finding Paco...

Oh no!  Poor Paco.  You must be so distraught.  I really hope you find him soon.

Honestly I don't think you can blame the gardeners too much, unless they are letting the dogs out themselves (in which case they need to make sure the gates are shut).  But if you are coming home and letting the dogs out after the gardeners leave, I think you should just check the gates yourself and make sure the property is secure before letting the dogs out.  If they agreed to close the gates, I might speak to them about it and let them know you are unhappy, but I don't think I'd fire them.  I'd just double-check before sending the dogs out.  I also have people who come and mow, and I just always survey the yard after they have been there.

I wouldn't fire the gardners for one mistake; the next ones might be worse.  I would tell them how upset you are.  They may help search for Paco!

I would start checking the gate before I let the dogs out.  I could never again completely trust them or any gardners for that matter.

Don't give up looking for Paco!  Sometimes it takes weeks or months to find them.

When you find him (think positive), micro-chip him if he doesn't already have one.

I know you're upset, but I wouldn't fire the gardeners. I've been in the same position. Even if the gardeners are great, it is still your responsibility to check that the gate is fully latched before letting your dog hang out in the yard unsupervised. Accidents happen, and if you like these gardeners, you should tell them what happened and just ask them to be more careful.

I hope you find Paco really, really soon!! Has he been missing for a whole week?

I'm TERRIBLY sorry about your dog, best wishe in finding him. I thikn it's easy for me to say, since it wasn't my dog that got away, but it would seem smarter to get your gardeners to help you look for your dog as someone mentioned, and this will make them more careful in the future for sure.

As an after thought, is it possible to install a spring so your gate closses on its own?

is it possible to install a spring so your gate closses on its own?

Yes! We put it on our gate. I should have said something, I'd forgotten. Make it a strong one so the gate really slams shut to make sure the latch sticks. This really is a life-saver.

When I was growing up our gardeners used to leave the gate open all the time, and my Sheltie would run down to the elementary school at the end of the street to go looking for me. The office knew our phone number and would always call for us to pick her up!

I hope he comes home . . . you've had enough stress this year already!

I have springs on all my gates, I bought them at home depot, only took about 5 minutes per gate to put them on.
I hope Paco is found safe and sound.

I have springs on all my gates,

We have springs on all our gates also.  It was a requirement to pass inspection once our pool was put in.  I truly hope that Paco is home safe and sound now though.

    Go home, Paco!

I wouldn't fire the gardeners, just ask them to shut it next time. If it keeps happening after being reminded, that's a different story in my eyes.

    Good luck with finding Paco!

Any news?  Paco, COME!!! Good boy...
