What would you do?

Ugh as if I really needed this right now!!!
Last week my gardeners came like usual. I was out running errands and I left the dogs in the house. When I got home I let them out back to potty and got my daughter a snack. When I went to let them back in, they were gone! Turns out the gardeners didn't latch the gate. It's never been a problem before, they know we have dogs and they are always good about making sure the gate is latched. Bear came home a while later but I haven't seen Paco since! We looked over the neighborhood several times, put up flyers, ad in the newspaper, checked the pound, you name it!
I am going to call the gardeners and tell them what happened and that we are really upset. Should we fire them and find someone new?
What would you do in my situation?

I would forget the gardeners and continue to look for your dog!!!  (www.lostapet.org will have good suggestions on how) It helps to put up HUGE posters that simply say Lost Brown (or whatever color the dog is) Dog and a phone number so that motorists can read it.  Call all the Animal Control Officers in the area, not just your local pound.  And, visit the shelters every other day.  Dogs have died in pounds because the owner's description didn't match the ACO's description of the same dog!  Make sure you call all the local vet clinics, and grooming salons, too, in case they have a dog come in that someone picked up and kept.

I hope you find your lost dog very soon.

Why fire them? We have gardeners who do the same thing occasionally. It's our job as dog owners to check the gate when we arrive home & let our dogs out. Just you yourself remember & your dogs will be perfectly safe. On the day they come we keep our gate lock on the chair next to the doggie door to remind us to lock the gate before letting our dogs out.

Oh, I hope you find Paco soon! I'm so sorry... you must be so worried. You are all in my thoughts tonight.

I say you speak with the gardeners and just be very redundant with checking on the gate in the future. I'm sure they didn't do it on purpose... and it is the first time. But, I understand wanting to point the finger, i'm sure you're just beside yourself!!

I hope Paco finds home tomorrow!!!

We're sending thoughts and prayers for Paco's safe return. [:(]

And I would totally fire them if it were my dogs.

This is one of the reasons I keep a lock on my gate. No one can get in or out until we unlock it.  I have had meter readers leave the gate open. They are the worst.
