I think I kinda made money on the deal when I got my first dog[sm=rotfl.gif]
The owners took "Boomer" to a shelter where they were told he wasn't adoptable and they would give him 2 days before they put him down. They brought him home.
He scared people who came to their house in response to their "free dog" newspaper ad. They called a rescue group. The rescue group wouldn't take him----but they did tell me about him. I called the family just as they were deciding to take him back to the shelter.
So I visited the family with someone I knew who bred/trained dogs to evaluate "Boomer" to see how bad he really was, knowing if I said no he was pretty much a goner[

].
He was an untrained, poorly socialized, dog-aggressive, hyperactive, 11 month old lab/shepherd/doberman mix---but there wasn't a mean or nasty bone in his body.
I agreed to take him and the family was so greatful they dropped him off at my house a day later with his bowls, leash, vet records, two heartworm pills, a bag of dog food (which I tossed--they were feeding him senior food to calm him down[sm=eek.gif]) and his blanket. I asked if they wanted me to pay for anything and they just dropped the stuff on my porch and sped off. I think they were afraid I would change my mind.
So I got a house broken, neutered dog WITH some equipment for free.[sm=dance.gif]
He was renamed Liam and was my wonderful boy until he died at age 13.
Full disclosure: While I didn't have to pay for him up front, he did end up costing me hundreds of dollars in the first few months for

rivate training (couldn't be near other dogs at first) and in property damage before he was crate trained.[sm=lol.gif]
