    Sweet Dog Suffering From Pneumonia

    Hi,

My Dog Sadie is suffering from Pneumonia. She's at the Vet hospital and we're anxiously waiting as she goes through treatment and IV's. We don't know yet if she's going to make it. Has anyone else been through this? Please no sad stories, I'd really like encouragment.

     Thanks so much.

I haven't been through this with a dog of mine, but I hope your baby gets well quickly and comes home to you soon.

I've never had a dog with it either, but I hope she feels better soon! Since she has to stay at the vet, can she have a blankie and a toy from home? That made Pirate feel tons better when he had to stay.

I have no experience with that but just wanted to say good luck. Hopefully she'll pull through with no problems.

Awwwwww, I have never had experience with a dog & pneumonia.  You definitely have all my good thoughts for Miss Sade for a speedy recovery.  I hope she can come home soon.  I second what Megan said.  If you can, take her something from home that she loves.  It might help her feel less lonely & fight harder.  If you can go see her, tell her that there are a bunch of dog dorks that are pulling for her.  Of course give her some rubbin's from us too.

Thanks to everyone's kind words and advice. I will bring her a small pink teddy bear i bought for her when she first got sick. Her favorite blanket won't fit in the cage since its a king size, lol. I just got an update from my boyfriend who went to visit her at lunch and said she ate. She apparently will only eat one time a day and only Hill's Science Diet a/d. We both want her to get better, this is so hard! I miss my sweet sadie baby so much :-( Yes, I am a dog dork too gradyupmybutt.

When my foster hound Marvin came to my house, after a week, he got pneumonia and boy did it come on fast.  It might have been trigger by the kennel cough vac.  Anyway, he stayed in the vet hospital for a week, was on 3 antibiotics, and a nebulizer.  When I picked him up he was as normal as can be.

I'm glad that your dog got better! I really hope that Sadie will recover too. It's just so scary since the vet said that it was "the worst case of pneumonia" she had ever seen due to the x-rays. I just don't want them to say tomorrow that there's no point to keep her in the hospital, that she won't get better :-( This is the scariest thing ever.

Going to visit is IMPORTANT. Because you need to encourage them. Print out all these posts and go take and READ them to her. Will she fully understand? nope – but she’s going to understand the intent. She’s going to ‘get it’ that you are talking about HER and that other people care.

Take her the bear. Take her a dirty t-shirt of yours (yep, dirty – so it has your scent on it).

Make a list of all the people who wish her well – WITH NAMES ... So and so says get better! Mark says get better! Grandpa says get better!! Again == it’s knowing that others care. Get an idea from the vet when she may come home – and tell her. Count the days down. She’s not going to understand numbers exactly BUT she will know you say she’s coming home and she’ll be encouraged by it.

I had a dog at one time who had horrible heartworm – literally so bad that it damaged her heart and lungs enormously. She literally LIVED with "bronchitis" every day of her life. There are many, many things you can do to help her get better and get stronger.

When you are able to take her home, ask the vet specifically do they want the cough "suppressed" or NOT suppressed (do they want her to cough junk up or NOT cough so it doesn’t tire her). From there you’ll know what to give her to soothe the cough.

YES a dog can get better from pneumonia. There has to be a healing time, but you’ll be able to help her get stronger and more resillient. Ask the vet flatly if there will be lingering damage to the heart or lungs and what to do about it, what to watch for.

Feel free to e-mail me – take it a step at a time and you will do FINE.

Thanks, I will definitely do that this evening when I go visit her :-)

Please remember to let Sadie know that we're thinking about her.

Wanted to send some LOCAL healing wishes to Sadie!

Oliver was diagnosed with pneumonia at 13 weeks old.  It was awful for me to watch my baby puppy (whom I had only had for a week) go through this.  They had Oliver for 2 days, did the IV antibiotics, take home drugs and he is just fine now.  My previous dog had distemper, and dealing with that was much, much worse than dealing with pneumonia.

I second the ideas of visiting her, telling her out loud how much and how many people love her and are wishing her well.  Make sure they allow you to pet her and comfort her as much as possible.  She can get over this!!!

I hope she's all better soon, many hugs from Lexi and Darby the bichon girls, Gobie the minpin terror and their hu-mom too!

We adopted my Tashmoo from the shelter when he was about a year old, and he was in horrible shape. He was emaciated and abused, and 2 days after he came home with us he developed pneumonia. Our vet was trying to prepare me, telling me he didn't think he would make it, but he did. I was by him every step of the way, and even when he came home, I slept next to him and stayed home from work until i felt he would be ok. You just need to let your sweet girl know that she is safe now, you are her family, and that you want her home as soon as possible. Tell her we are all looking forward to all the pictures and stories that you are going to have with her, so she had better get well and come home soon. I am hoping with everything in me for a quick recovery for her, and a lifetime of love. Give her a big smooch from myself and my gang!!

My dog had Pneumonia when he was 10 weeks old.  He wouldn't eat or drink, very weak and dehydrated and very labored breathing.  He was in the hospital for 3 days.  I did go visit him the after he was admitted and didn't really see much improvement.  He still wasnt eating but atleast they got some fluids into him.  The next day I went to visit and saw a big improvement as did they.  He was eating and showed a lot of excitement when he seen me.  When we picked him up he was darn near completely healed.  We took him back for nebulization (sp?) twice a day for the next two days.  He is a perfectly healthy 1.5 yr old boy!

I wish you best, im sure he will make a full recovery. It's a good sign if he's eating.
