How do you know when your dog hasn't had enough exercise?

How do you know when your dog hasn't had enough exercise?

I thought this would be an entertaining topic. What does your dog do to tell you that he/she needs exercise? Drop a ball in your lap? Give you the leash? Destroy toys?

Dakota gets very talkative - more than usual and it drives me nuts. I usually give in just to shut her up.

Neiko pushes toys at me endlessly - frisbee, squeeky toys, stuffies, tennis balls, and so on.

    when they're awake...LOL.

Honor sounds a lot like Dakota.  She'll get REALLY vocal, it becomes "woo-woo this" and "woo-woo that" in the most piercing voice she can muster. Stick out tongue

Ditto, for real!  Or, when Kenya tries to play with cats.

Sophie will usually start chasing the cats around, something she only really does when she needs exercise!  She also will become very vocal, she does this sort of howl thing when she needs exercise.

My dog Rory paces and stares at DH or I. If that dosnt work she pulls out the big guns and goes to where her leash hangs by the door and bumps it with her nose. You cant ignore the swinging back and forth of the leash and she just gets more persistant, lol!

I'm grateful I have an easy-going boy :) He walks if I want to walk, he sleeps when I sleep. We still walk twice a day, but if we miss a night, a good game of indoor fetch will do!

Marlowe is like Rory. He just paces and stares at you. No bumping of leashes with noses though, though that would be just too incredibly cute. He just won't settle. Both my dogs are pretty low on the energy scale so if they aren't able to snuggle in and get some shut-eye when you invite them up to the couch with you, it means they need exercise. Conrad really doesn't give any signals. When he gets the idea that you might be possibly thinking about maybe going for a walk though, he starts with his wookie noises and you just can't get leashed up and out the door fast enough for him.

Salem sits by the front door and just stares at you. If that doesn't do it he gets really vocal and whiny. He will annoy us until we walk him.

If he wants to play he drops things in my lap until I give in.

Belle is more "subtle". If we haven't gotten her out enough (in her mind) she will empty the bathroom trash piece by piece and leave it in the livingroom. She is pretty good and let's us slide a day or two first. However I am really pretty good getting her out daily. This week will be hard so it could be interesting. Teddi is pretty good at entertaining her self, but if she is really amp'd she does the Teddianapolis around the couch. It is a hoot to watch. Maxine has always been the complacent one. However last winter we had a stretch where the wind chills were not going above 20 below. Kind of hard to walk a dog. Well Maxine was the one who started coming un corked. She ran around the house, jumping, bouncing DRIVING US CRAZY. We loaded the dogs in the car, drove to the park (2 blocks) and let them out to romp. Max loves her walks she ususally goes about 2 miles, but she would be just as happy going around the block.

Sasha is pretty happy with our standard routine - a walk or light jog in the evening.  She doesn't care about exercise all that much, though the sniffies on the walk are pretty vital. Around the time we walk, she gets ansty and does her begging-stare, or she'll walk up and look at you with wagging tail. She's never destructive or a PITA about these things.  I've gotten spoiled!

When Luna starts throwing socks in the air and jumping around with them. It's her "there is nothing else to do, so I might as well play with this sock!" behavior.

    • Gold Top Dog

The "I Can Haz Walk Now?" stares (note Marlowe's blurry wagging tail):

Max, by nature, is a total couch potato. Smile He enjoys his walks and he gets very excited when he sees me take the leash out of the basket where I keep it.  If weather - or something else - interferes and keeps us from walking for a few days, he's totally content to snooze.   DS #2 will often shine a flashlight for him and let him chase lights and shadows up and down the hall or around the back yard.
