    Teeth and breeds...

Just out of curiosity let me ask this:

Do any of your dogs have serrations on the back side of their top canine teeth?  Could you state the breed or breeds that you have and if they do or don't?  I'm really interested, but on a personal basis.

I ask because one of my coworkers bagged a coyote on a hunt this past weekend.  In examining the photos I noticed the serrations on the back of the coyote's teeth.  Xerxes has these same serrations.  I would assume that a more domestic dog wouldn't have them but before I make that assumption, I'd like to find out from others.  The ridge is used for slicing through tendon and muscle, primarily for eating but also for "hamstringing" prey.

So just rub your fingertip on the back edge of the canine teeth of your dogs, see if that ridge is there.  Thanks!

    Visible serration..no...ridge? yes.

If there are serrations like on a knife the must be exceedingly tiny...they are not visible. But there is a raised ridge that running your finger along feels definitely like a surface there to slice.

Buckwheat's was dulled due to her age....that being 9+...she is a husky x Terrier.

Ellie's was nice and raised...she is a almost 2y/o Beagle.

    Nonnie's was also a nice raised ridge...she's a nearly 5 y/o Beagle.

Gina, the serrations are like the serrations on a dime...very small but noticeable.  Thanks for the info on your puppers.

My own theory is that I'll find most every dog has that ridge, but very few will have the serrations.

I never noticed before, but Cherokee's definitely got some serration-ish ridge on hers. My finger nail catches a lot of times when I slide it down the back of her teeth. I really can't even guess at this point as to her breeds. Lab seems an obvious, but only because she's a medium-sized black mutt. I thought lab/chow for quite a few years, but now I'm not so sure. Sometimes I see GSD, sometimes she looks a bit akita-ish, sometimes I think maybe rottie or something... really I've got no clue. But she's got serrated teeth! Big Smile

Thanks Chelsea!  This is proving to be quite interesting....

No serrations on the dobes, doxies, or boxer.

Brinxx of unknown orgin does have serrations.

    Thanks Amanda!

Now I'm thinking that it might be a recessive gene in most purebreds.  This is really interesting, I just wish I had more hits!  LOL

I'll move it to General for you to stir some more input...

ETA: This was moved from Breeds, by me...to see if more people wanted to participate in Ed's experiment lol.

Lexi, 3 year-old GSP/lab/maybe some other things mutt, has the ridge and serrations.

Luna, 8 month old Aussie, has a ridge but no serrations.

Rosco isn't in the room ATM, so I will update on him later.
