    I love my dog, but...

I can't take it anymore.  Nikita, my 5 yr old shepard mix (female), leaks urine all the time.  She's been on Propalin for as long as I can remember, which helps.  The problem is that she has urinary tract infections all the time.  I think she's up to 10 now.  When she has an infection she leaks buckets of urine all over, as opposed to virtually nothing when there is no infection.  The Doc speculated to her female parts being too small and being fixed too early, CA law, to being the culprit.  Besides surgery is there anything else I can do?  Has anyone else experienced something simular?

The best thing to do for that would be to prevent UTIs. I'd give her a cranberry pill and a dose of d-mannose every day.

Homeopet's Leaks No More works GREAT for my incontinent dog.

Yes. Our family dog when I was young was a rough collie. I'm convinced it was the result of a bad "spay" job by the vet. She leaked urine constantly from the time she was four years old until she had to be put to sleep when she was 12.

I have more than a few "issues" with my parents regarding this dog, and how she unfortunately died from this condition an it's complications. [:(]

I'm sorry you are all going through this. It must be very hard.

    what kind of complications?

This makes me sick to talk about it.

The dog was not allowed in the house for the most part, but when the problem started, she was not allowed in the house at all. In the heat of summer flys would lay eggs on her which hatched into maggots. The vet gave us some salve and I was the one who kept her clean because noone else could bath her without a fuss. When I moved away from home my parents neglected her until she was covered with sores and maggots and had to be put down. I will never forgive them for this...it burns me up to this day. [:@]

But, you certainly must have more hope and options for your dog in this day and age. Do some research and I promise you, I will dig into the net and see what I can find, too.

Maybe others have had experience with this problem.

    Don't give up yet.

Yep, these are great products.  Some other tips to preventing UTI's are...give lots of water maybe gived canned food.  When the urine becomes to consintrated with minerals it forms mucus, which then turn into crystals, both mucus and crystals cause the bladder to be irritated and cause UTI's  Give distilled or spring water without added minerals.

You can also buy doggie diapers for your dog.

Proin is not the only medication used for spay incontinence.  Ask your vet if your dog is a candidate for increased dosage of Proin, or if you could try DES (diethylstilbestrol) for her.
Try to have her void more often, and crate her for sleeping at night.  They leak more when they are asleep because the sphincter muscle, which may be quite weak in these dogs, is even more relaxed.  Do take the advice about the cranberry tabs - you can get them at B Naturals online. Also, don't restrict her water intake.

My heart girl had spay incontinence.  We managed it *very* well with DES.  It wasn't until she got old (15 yrs) that it wasn't working anymore but that's for another reason.  Don't give up!  Also know that your dog doesn't like it any more than you do.  Lucy would have this "I didn't mean to do it" look on her face when she did leak.  It broke my heart.

Just as an FYI is it safe to use Homeopet in conjunction with prescription meds?

Fortunately it isn't something Tasha has developed thus far, but I think I'd start with the holistic vet for that one. Actually, I'm at the point where I start with the holistic vet for anything that seems like it may be long-term.

    I was wondering that myself.

On another note, I hope you're able to get your poor pup's leaking taken care of. I'm sure that's not fun for either of you.

Yes, it should be. I'd call homeopet and make sure the won't interact, but I seriously doubt they would. Homeopathics have no side effects, and I don't think they have any drug interactions, but Emma hasn't been on prescription meds in quite some time.... The company is very helpful, though.
