Honest Opinions Needed!! (mrstjohnson) - Updated on first post

I need some opinions on what to do.  My girlfriend lent me her breastpump for 3 months (it was supposed to be longer, but that's a long story).  Anyway, the pump was 4 yearsold and she had used it for 16 months.  She got the pump in the mail yesterday and it didn't work and canoot be fixed.  It was damaged in shipping.  I had it insured for $200 thank goodness for that!

So I called around and to replace the pump (not the exact carrybag, but same motor pump) is going to be $250.  So I thought, well I would split it with her.  She called me before I could tell her and tells me that the exact same one that she had (It was a backpack style) was going to be over $320..  Now I am annoyed.  She expects me to pay for the complete difference between the insurance and the price of the new pump because she wants a specific style of bag.  Yes, that's the same style she had before, but how much does that matter, the motor is the same, same output.

What do you think, am I responsible for the complete difference?  I only used it for 3 months and she used it for 16 months.

    Thanks,

    Lisa

Here's the update of what ended up happening...

She ordered the pump for $235 online (thanks again Truley) and had it Federal Expressed (for $50) to her house so she would get it today.  I told her that I would pay for the $35 (difference between cost and insurance money, but I wasn't going to pay the $50 for her to get it next day when she hasn't even had the baby yet and she would have gotten it by Friday with free shipping - she's not happy, but oh well)

However, this is where it gets interesting for those so inclined to drama.  I spoke the woman at the post office this morning where she filed the claim to make sure that everything was set and she had all of the information.  The woman at the post office voluntarily tells me that my friend she is trying to rip me off.  When I asked her to explain she says (I'm paraphrasing here), "your friend point blank told her husband who was sitting with her that although this is a pain at least now she can get a free new pump, and hopefully she can convince me to buy her the upgraded model that maybe I won't know the difference since I will feel so bad about everything".  My head absolutely exploded.

I also caught her in two lies yesterday.  She told me that she paid $300+ for the pump that she had originally and that she didn't buy it online (she claimed she never bought anything online which is why she wanted me to do it), well in the documents the POst Office person faxed me for the claim, her original receipt is in there and she only paid $240 and she bought it online.

DH is livid!  He wants me to tell her off but I am waiting until the hormones come back down after she has the baby.

    Isn't friendship the best.

so she is getting A NEW PUMP?

Umm no...I'd gladly replace like with like, or give her the market value of a 4 year old pump, in cash...but replacing new with old is well...gouging if you ask me.

Sounds to me like she is being selfish.  I think if she wants that specific style, then she should pay the difference.  Just my honest opinion.

I probably should add that she is expecting any day now.  I don't know if that makes a difference or not...that's why she wanted it back, because she may need to start pumping again as this time she is a stay at home mom vs. working.

Was the bag damaged? Can't she use the old bag with a new motor?

    • Gold Top Dog

I asked her that and she said no.  It would take some fanagling, but she says it can't be done.  She also complained that I didn't return the manual...but she forgot that I also included a brand new set of tubes and a new package of membranes for her as a thank you.

    • Gold Top Dog

    What happened to the manual?

    Here's a backpack one for $230...

Let's track this down! LOL What brand is it?

    • Gold Top Dog

Medela brand.  I have the manual.  I just forgot to include it when I sent it.  The cheapest I could find was $280+ on Amazon, but she's afraid it won't get there in time!

    Is this it?:

and I would not pay the difference, it was not new, and someone else damaged it, your not responsible for that.

opps! wrong link, try this one.

Here's one for $235. She's going to need it the moment she delivers? Bah! Give her this link and she can order it herself. I think she's being extremely selfish and petty. Pregnant or not. Her pump is 4 years old and she expects you to replace it with a new one??? I've had enough of this girl! LOL

Edit: I wouldn't pay the difference either since you bought her new parts. Hopefully, she learned her lesson about loaning such things out. Friendship is more important than $120 or whatever the difference is.

Crap, I just called them and they don't carry it anymore...I hate when they do that!

    • Gold Top Dog

Not to be mean but I would tell her she is sool*so out of luck* !! I would NOT pay for her to get a brand new one . Sounds to me she is trying to pull a fast one on you and get something new for her self. I would give her the 200 insurance and that would BE IT! its 4yo it MIGHT be worth 100 at that age , And that you replace'd some things on it should have a good will kind of thing. She has no room to get mad at you .

    IMO

She's going to need it the moment she delivers? Bah!

that's what I'm saying! You don't pump the day you have the kid or even a week after...at least I didn't. I had maternity leave and I used every last day of it! I nursed my babies because I was home and because I enjoyed it. Pumping came later when I went back to work with the 1st and when we travelled etc.

LOL she honestly sounds like she is having a good ole fashioned pre-baby freak out and unfortunately you are involved in it Lisa LOL!

This isn't a court thing I know but in any court they aren't going to replace it or give the 'new' value for a 4 year old item damaged in shipping!
