    Veterinary Costs--Geographical Differences

Okay, since I've mentioned the high cost of, well, everything up here a few times I thought I'd tell you all what it cost me to take Sofia to the vet yesterday.

    $49.50 for the visit
    $24.97 ear swab and cytology
$24.95 dog bump needle aspiration and cytology
    $17.65 ear ointment
    15.40 clip toenails

    $132.49

    No shots! Nothing fancy!

I have to say that I love my vet, she's the best and she does a fabulous job with Sofia.

Lani, I'm wondering if costs in Hawaii are like this?

Keeping in mind my prices are in Canadian dollars and I only put
things here that I have found out the cost of

25$ for a basic quick examination (I can;t remember how much the long one was)
25$ a shot (but on top of that they charge the examintion fee so 50$)
20$ for testing a poop sample
0$ for clipping toenails (I need to get my dog groomed every month or two and the groomer does this)
    100$ Neutering

I say Dremel and save the 15.40 on toes [;)].  Took 5 in the vets office to do Reggie's toes.  Got out the liver, bought a dremel.  Spent 5 weeks desensitizing her to the sound and feel of the tool.  In about 3 months, could call out "time to do toes" and she would rush to the sliding doors (lots of light) lay down and put a foot in the air. BTW  costs are pretty close to what I pay here in OH

It's about the same here in NY.  However, he didn't charge me for a nial clip.  I usually do it and he just did it without me asking him.  Must have been an over sight on his part, I'm sure.  I do love my vet tho.  ;Poor guy is allergic to dogs..lol,lol

I couldn't find a slip from a routine visit without digging for it.. but I found this one, and looking at it compared to Jean's I think I can see why I love my vet! This is from the first visit for Boss when the cat punctured a hole in his eye. Personally I thought for all they did for him, the fee was reasonable. We were there almost 2 hours.

    Urgent Care fee     20.00
    Office Visit            32.00
    Fluoresceine Dye Test 10.00
    Anesthetic             30.00
    Eye Flap Repair    20.00
    Gentocin Opth Ointment   14.50
    Baytil  68mg Tabs   29.40
    Admin for Injection  8.00
    Eliz Collar            19.90
    Tax                3.83

    Total                $187.63

Oh, and they clipped his nails while he was under too

Nueter here is $110, plus the 40 bucks for pre op blood work.  Rabies is $27, hw bloodwork is 23......I do the other vaccines myself.  An office visit is $35....luckily for the most part I have EXTREMELY healthy dogs.

Jean, one of my dogs recently had his wellness check and a needle aspirate on a cyst. Was the slide from your dog's aspirate sent off to a lab?  The reason I ask is because my Vet only charged $10 for the aspirate, but then it was another $65.20 for the cytology!  The office visit was $35.50, and HW test was $37.50.

I've given up trying to remember prices...they just keep going higher.  Java went in last week for her check-up and shots and I walked out almost $400 poorer.  She did have a CBC to check for diabetic cataracts, and I had them look at a lick granuloma, so there were meds in there too.

An office visit is $35...they used to not charge that when vax were involved, but no more.  Nail clip is 12.50, and they don't always put that on the bill.  The CBC was around $20 to draw the blood and $75 for the analysis.

Winnie goes in next week for a UA, which is $37 if I can get out of there without anything else.  The assistant Vet always apologizes to me...

I took Maya in for a fecal exam, annual shots, county registration, and got some medicine.
    The grand total was $53.

For most things, shots, minor illnesses, spays/neuters, etc. we use an old "farm vet".  He practices out of his home in the evenings, and is an old friend of the family.  I LOVE him and don't know what we will do once he is gone.  He is matter-of-fact and no-nonsense, but loves animals.
We had a terrible dog fight here a couple weeks ago.  The first, and hopefully only one we will ever experience, but that is another story.
I called the vet in a panic, and he told me to bring Lucy right over.  We carried her in and he looked her all over, cleaned up most of the blood, and sewed up two lacerations.  He gave her a shot of antibiotic, and another 5 days worth of antibiotic pills. He clipped her nails while she was on the table, gave us instructions about how to care for her wounds, and charged us $25.00!!!
He doesn't do x-rays or blood work. For that we use another, much more expensive vet.

Vet visit here is $38.  For Cole's visit and shots this week it was $54.

Lenny was neutered at a low cost clinic, and that was $35.  We've also gone to low cost shot clinics that cost $30 for whatever puppy/dog/kitten/cat shots they need.

I guess it all depends where you go, too.

Interesting side note:  Cole didn't make a peep when he got his shot, but screamed like holy h*ll when they took his temperature.[sm=uhoh.gif]

Trish, the costs you have look like what I was used to paying in New Mexico.

Swamper, does that mean you are in Louisiana? You must have the cheapest vet of all! (BTW did you know can add your state on your profile? I like it when I can see where someone is from [:D])

I do my shots myself, and was happy to find out Sofia didn't need another rabies shot, as she's on the 3yr protocol now.

I've been working with her to get her accustomed to the dremel. The sandpaper is too slow. And treats DON'T help. Sofia becomes intense and alert with a treat around! Not what you want for nail trimming! (See the picture on my profile! Miss ALERT!) I'm alone, I have no one else to help distract the dog, btw. I can clip about one toenail a day right now, and am working with her to get her less freaky around both the clippers and the dremel.

But like I said, the dremel sandpaper does NOTHING to her nail except tickle, I think. Her nails are super hard. I really think, despite what they say about not using the stone, that if I use the dremel on her nails that's how I will have to go.

I actually live in southern IL.  It's fairly rural out here.  It's a country vet practice and they're good and doing what needs to be done.

re toe nails,,,sounds like you are making progress.  I wouldnt worry about the stone, have often used one on the dogs.  BTW  I did it on my own too.
