Veterinary Costs--Geographical Differences

Im in Louisiana.. and have 2 vets.  The one in New Orleans where we used to live is a friend of my husbands family so he knows us well and we go there sometimes.  Hes the one who did the necropsy on Kayla (and he didnt charge us anthing)

We brought Bailey to him for her first visit.  She got her puppy shots and fecal, that was $81.

The vet right by our house, right outside New Orleans, charged $38 when I recently took Bailey for her limping.  He just looked and said she was fine, so Im sure the $38 is just per visit minimum there.

The place I mentioned above is the same place I took Kayla.  She went for 3 consecutive days for IV and blood work right before she died of pancreatitis which was $687.  I decided to continue going there because I really do like her, and finally decided it wasnt her fault Kayla died.... you know how that goes.

There the annual things are usually about $100.

This was a few years ago, but I paid $47 to have a bearded dragon  euthanized. I think it was $40 for the vet visit and $7 for whatever they gave him. Mille's recent vet visit was $227 and some odd sense, although I don't have the total breakdown on the price. She had a 3yr rabies, another vaccine (influenza or something like that, not totally sure) a fecal, a nail clip, but it was uncharged for, a prescription for Proin, a fecal, a heartworm test, and 12months of heartworm pills for dogs 51-100lbs which is for both her and Max. I think that was everything.

Oh angelabarry your vet sounds awesome!

The place where I take my dogs USED to be just like that. I used to bring my dog in, and if it was something tht really didn't require much, he'd just say, "no charge!" He now has five other vets in there and when I just took Dash in for his cut paw, I ended up paying about $100 for antibiotics, visit and bandaging.

i got a coupon for a free vet visit with participating vets when i got emma from the pound..... yeah..... its only free if she isnt sick.  but since she happens to have a cold they charged me $35 for a regular exam.  she also needed a rabies shot (which for some reason the shelter here doesnt give rabies shots), so that was $12.25, $15.65 for a fecal check, $20.16 for antibiotics for her cold.

For future reference, thats one HECK of a lot of vaccines all on one day....really hard on the immune system, PLUS if there is a reaction, you don't know to WHAT.  I'd maybe talk to the vet about spreading them out and not charging for an office visit with every vaccine.  Of course, I wouldn't be giving as many.......but we all have to operate within our own comfort levels.

She's only a little over a year old so this was her first set of vaccs (after the initial puppy ones).  Didn't think anything of it, having been in the military I've been through vaccination days when I was shot up with much more than my little doggy so I wouldn't put her through anything I wouldn't do and after doing a quick internet search it does seem like there is some debate on this issue.

Thanks for the note though, it's definitely something worth researching into.  Guess the good thing is she's young so she was running and playing right after the shots and no adverse effects a month later with my lil girl.

I live in rural NE Ohio but my vet is in town: Exam - $9Shots - $20 or so, depending on what I choose to have givenWormer - $4Rabies - $17Nail clipping - N/CShave around perineal (sp?) area (keeps her nice and clean) - N/CSpay, when she's ready - about $100, includes everything Seems reasonable to me... I had been taking my cat there and when I saw my vet's mini Aussie, I literally melted on the floor.  After they picked me up, he told me about a breeder he knew, loved, and trusted that had a litter.  As we had been researching and planning for a pup, we felt it was a sign that we were finally ready, and even better that it was a breed I was already familiar with.  Once I got her and brought her in, he was in love.  Takes me forever to get out of there because he's always lovin' on her.  I'm okay with that.

    Mickey's  visit on 3/06 was
anesthetic           75.00 (two kinds - shot to put him out and Rapinovet)
Surgery              95.00 (tumor material sent off for biopsy)
Thyroid test        40.00 (went to the vet school in Corvallis)
    Soloxine tabs      36.00  (180 tabs)

This was for a back tumor so wasn't as bad as the one in January for the cyst that had it's own blood supply.

His visit the end of March to get his stitches out was 20.00 because he also got his DHP-PV (given every other year at my option).

Well I guess I can't complain about my vet after seeing some of these prices. For my gals last visit to the vet it was $82.00 for the both of them for heart worm test and two heartworm tabs. For Lucy's spay and I had her rear dews done it was $180.00. I can't remember what I pay for rabies and distemper shots.
