Breed questionnaire

    Breed questionnaire

I just popped by the pedigree website and they have a breed selector thing on there....

    http://www.uk.pedigree.com/whatdog/selectadog.asp

Well I did it, just for fun and it told me that suitable matches would be a Dalmation or a Great Dane which I don't agree with.  How accurate do you guys think this thing is?  What breeds did you get matched with?

It doesn't ask if you have any kids, what ages or any other pets and it doesn't ask how long the dog is likely to be left in the day which are really important questions IMO.

It gave me the afghan hound as first choice, which I'm not too sure about, then the St. Bernard as second.  So I guess it's pretty close, as I'm a St. gal...

And I agree with the kids question, definitely.  I don't know how good Afghans are with kids, but I've got a 2 year old and another on the way, so that's an important question.  There are plenty of other questions that need to be addressed, too.

I did the USA one above...it had ?'s about kids, elderly folks...etc. I got a LOOOONG list...pretty accurate as far as what I plugged in for activity level and my non preferences of size and grooming.

You're right that one is loads better.  There were a couple of dubious matches in what it came up with, but mostly OK.

I did the UK pedigree one and got GSP which isn't too far off base from what I've got. It didn't ask anything about temperment, though, which I found odd. Just like size of house and yard, how much exercise and would a child be walking the dog. But what about a question like "Do you want training to resemble repeatedly banging your head on a wall?" [:D]

The UK one gave me the Cav which I love... pretty good match and close to what I have.

The US one was different... gave me the Eskie, Sussex & Clumber spaniels, Finnish Spitz and Husky... I really don't think I'm a Nordic breed kind of person so I'm not crazy about those results. The next couple of dogs were the Toller & BC, which I find a little crazy since I specified low-to-medium energy & exercise requirements! So I'd have to give that test a thumbs down.

One thing I dislike about these breed selectors is when they include all these rare breeds... it would be better if they focused on the most common dogs, so that people who take these tests might be more inclined to rescue than go hunting for some obscure Clumber spaniel breeder halfway across the country.

The test told me a Shih Tzu is good for me! Ha, I guess that is pretty darn close! ha.

I specified moderate exercise requirements and also came up with BC.... and I said I only had a small house but it came up with Bullmastiff... a little too big?

I liked that one a bit better.  I got (in descending order) a german pinscher, Viszla, Basset, Plott, Staffordshire Bull, Harrier, Pharaoh Hound, AmStaff, Ibizan, and a RedBone Coonhound.  Most of which are dogs I want to own (with the exception of terriers and Bassets.)

Lol...I'd consider a Bullmastiff fine for a small house. Not like they are very active. IMO the BC is off....but a large breed that's rather sedate can fit in fine even in an apt...better than say a smaller but more active or needy/velcro breed.
    • Gold Top Dog
True.  I wouldn't discount larger breeds just for house size, but going on the size of my house, there's just nowhere to put a BM!!  It would take up our whole living room!

Beagles were on mine...along with Cardi's, & Anatolians which I'd looked into before. There were some others I simply don't like the look of...but that's something a computer cannot take into account...personal preferences as to the look of the dog. Oh yes and some barkers were also on the list which I don't like...but again...didn't ask "do you like loud or quiet dogs" lol!

I plugged in for living situations next year and got... a boxer.  Sorry to boxer folk, but definitely not my kind of dog.

For the USA one I got a Tibetan Terrier, which is a breed I absolutely adore but I've never thought about owning one.

There was one really accurate one I did a while back and I seriously got papillons and shelties.  It amused me.

Keep in mind, these don't give you what type of breed you LIKE. They're the breed, according to "their" standards, best suited for your lifestyle.

I got Border Collie as my first one, so mine is spot on. [:D]

It's interesting. Neither test gave me Boston Terriers but the results from the UK one are Pug, Pembroke Welsh Corgi and West Highland Terrier. I think the only accurate one based on my answers would've been Pug. The US one was way off. It gave me Basset Hound, German Pinscher, Pharaoh Hound, Whippet, Plott Hound, American Staffordshire Terrier, Harrier, Redbone Coonhound, Ibizan Hound and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I put "medium" for size and "less than 30 minutes" for exercise so I don't know it came up with those breeds.
