are pitbulls supposed to be skinny?

His ribs are quite visible, but if he is eating I wouldn't worry too much.  He is gorgeous by the way.  You are able to see the outline of the ribs on my dog as well.

Wow, I'm surprised by the answers. He looks very skinny to me - since you can clearly see the ribs. He looks on the "very thing" side in the link that Janet posted. I have always believed that you should not be able to see the ribs, but you should be able to feel them.

should we give him more food, we give him 1 1/2 cups of evo red meat in the morning and than in the evening. maybe 2 cups in the morning and than 2 cups in the evening? or should we take him to the vet. the answers here sound like a mixed bag so i am not so sure what to do. i mean he acts like a normal, healthy dog but not sure.

Hard to say glock...if you are concerned you can add the Satin Balls to the regular diet...those put weight on quickly tho so don't overdo it. Personally? Considering the dogs at ABDA and your dogs breed...I think he looks fine. But again...I can only speak for myself.

wanted to give you this link to a gallery at a breed specific forum...look over these dogs...you might even post on that forum and ask them...IMO the folks in your breed are the best ones to ask about things like this and growth patterns etc.

ETA: There ARE pics of dogs working hogs on this site above so do bear that in mind when browsing the gallery...if you are squeamish...might not check it too deeply.

Yeah, I'd post on a breed specific forum and see what they say. That or talk to your vet. Keep in mind that this is a pet dog and not a working dog right? That will also make a difference in answers I think.

Think this dog is a pet that goes hiking etc....lord knows that's more than mine do LMBO....he has nice muscle tone which speaks to me of some pretty serious exercise going on. But then again some lines of PB put on muscle when they sneeze! Wish I had that problem Crying

I agree that the dog is on the thin side. I'd like to see maybe 3 or 4 more pounds on him. The whole seeing the spine when he lays down bothers me a bit, and honestly, the pics DO look a tad skinny. despite good muscles.

ya when he lays down and curls up you can clearly see every bump down his spine and his ribs clearly

It is that statment that bothers me a little. He is a beautiful dog but he might need just a wee bit more to him.

    • Gold Top Dog

I think he's beautiful. He has some serious muscle tone, and you can't (in the pictures) see his spine like you can on starving dogs.) I know people aren't dogs, but you can see my ribs the same way as his, and I'm not starving. =P

Well, I've never really seen a skinny pittbull, but you did rescue him, so maybe he was neglected.  I don't know how long you've had him, but give him time, with your love and care, he'll probably fill out.  Like you said, too, he's still young, so basically he's a pup yet.  Also, I had the same problem with my cat.  He looked really skinny to me, and I forget what happened, if it was just that he looked bad to me, or something else, but we took him to the vet and he said there was nothing wrong, with him that he was a perfect FIT cat.  Since then, though he has put on a little bit more meat, and looks healthier to me.  I also, have a maltese who is very small and skinny (well was), I didn't realize that when I went to buy her dog food, I accidently picked up the puppy brand.  Needless to say, she put on some weight!  LOL  She's not getting the puppy food anymore of course, once I realized what I did, I went and got her the right food, but not to waste it, I would add a little of it to her food, to finish it.  So, even though she's tiny she's got more 'substance' to her.  Makes me feel better, anyway!  Good Luck!

My PRT is that lean, and very healthy. Her ribs are quite visible, and she has chiseled muscle, just like the Pit does. When her spine and hip bones stuck out, I worried. Not so much, anymore. She has heavy muscling along her spine, but when she curls up, it shows. When I curl up, my spine shows, too, and I have ribs poking out when I stand in a normal position.

We shouldn't be round. Showing some ribs isn't a bad thing, especially for an atheletic dog.

    • Gold Top Dog

I wasn't saying fill out until you couldnt see ribs...I agree, seeing ribs is a good thing, just in my honest opinion, owning an athletic dog msyelf, you can see the ribs a biiit *too* distinctly on that dog. But I guess when you get to the range of a few pounds it comes down more to opinion.

    • Gold Top Dog

I think hes still young... still got a little "fillinf out" to do, just been rescued, probably just had a growth spurt not too long ago.... seems like a very active dog on a good diet.  All those things considered, he seems pretty normal.  If you want to increase his meals, do it a TINY bit and see how you go.  He looks in spanking good health to me and it would be a shame to spoil that for the sake of a few pounds.  OK so maybe he looks a *little* spare, but better that than a little fat.  You get so used to seeing fat animals everywhere, it makes him seems thinner than he really is.  And in this image conscious, weight obsessed world.... does it REALLY matter if he is a couple of pounds underweight?  Is he healthy in every other way?  Eating and drinking OK, pooping normally, active and happy in himself?

    • Gold Top Dog

Also, there's the coat factor. A Pittie has next to no coat, and no undercoat to cover his ribs or muscle. If he were a Border Collie, we wouldn't be seeing that (gorgeous) figure.

My friends lab just recently turned two and it wasn't until then that she actually started filling out.  No matter what they did they just couldn't keep the weight on her and health wise she was fine.  I wouldn't let him get any skinnier.  What does the rations on the bag say for an active dog his weight?
