upset tummy

    upset tummy

I know I should have posted this under Health, but I am hoping for some quick responses.  Winston is sick. :(  I thought I remembered someone saying chamomile tea helps soothe their tummy, but I wasn't for sure.  I know someone said pumkin, but I don't have any here at the house, and I don't want to leave him.

When I'm gone I leave him in the bathroom, and I forgot to put the lid down on the toilet.  Could that have made him sick???  I use an all natural cleaner on it, and I don't use those little color drop ins.  I'm hoping that's all it is, and that he's better by tomorrow.  I haven't finished with his shots yet, and I am scared to death of parvo.  (I keep him here at home and in my yard, but that doesn't keep other dogs from wandering up in my yard.)  If he's not better tomorrow I'm taking him to the vet, but I was wondering what I could do for him now to help him feel better.

If there is nothing nasty chemicalwise in the toilet I doubt toilet water would make him sick. Is there anything else he could have eaten in the bathroom? Is his breath particularly Irish Springy Fresh? [;)]

I ask because my Sadie dog, who was part lab, of course, would eat the bathroom soap. Never hurt her, but she sure did poop good later! Speaking of which, is he pooping okay? Having diarrhea?

    How's he acting otherwise?

I hope he's not sick. I think chamomile is good for tummies, too. If you can take his temp I would. Normal is between 100 and 102. If he has a temp it is off to the vet ASAP!

Lexi---Is he vomiting or diarrhea or. . .?? How is he acting otherwise, like he wants to play or is he just lying around?

I'd probably just fast him for tonight and see how he is in the am.

He's not playing like he usually does.  He seems more insterested in resting.  He doesn't have diarrhea, thank goodness.  He did turn away his dinner, though, and then threw up the meal he had earlier today.  He was fine earlier today and was playing, so that's why I thought it might have been the toilet.  I just checked and everything else in the bathroom looks undistiburbed.

I will try giving him some chamomile tea.  He seems to be drinking okay.  Not excessively, though.

Thanks for the responses, guys.  I'm so worried.  Ugh!

    oh, he grabbed his ball!

Something crossed my mind.  The other day when I was house hunting with my friend it was also "big trash" day.  I don't know if you guys have that, or if it's called the same thing, but that's when people put out all the furniture and other large items that don't fit in the trash can that they don't want anymore.  Well, I found a vacuum cleaner on the side of the road.  It's old and missing the hose, but I only have one rug, the rest of the floors are wood or tile, and it works fine for the rug.  But I could tell that whoever had it before had pets.  I could have brought the parvo virus home in the damn vacuum.  I know I'm TOTALLY jumping the gun here, but you just don't THINK about things like that, you know?

Winston and Romy are playing now.  [:)]   Maybe everything will be okay.

He could have a blockage, dog flu, whatever....Good that he's drinking so he'll stay hydrated. You just might not have seen the diarrhea yet, isn't it nice to know that something else could happen? Hope you both have a restful night! Did you take his temp?

I guess tomorrow he goes to the vet, eh?

Nope, I don't even have a thermometer.  I've never had to do that with Romy before, believe it or not.  Can you just hold it under their arm or thigh, or do you actually have to do it....the OTHER way?  *shudders*

I'll see how the rest of the night goes and whether he eats or not tomorrow morning.

Well, my doggie mom instinct is telling me if he's playing now, he's probably going to be fine by the morning.  He could of gotten into something outside or ate too fast or ran around too much after eating or any of the things that can suddenly cause this.

I wouldn't drive myself crazy worrying about parvo.  I've never had a pup, but wouldn't he be a lot sicker??  And, what would the chances but that that house had it???

Don't worry, I know it's hard, but they do go thru these things from time to time.

I totally respect Jean but I wouldn't jump to thinking it's a blockage at this point.  They do get sick and it's not going to be life threatening.

I'd forget the tea, fast until am and re-assess.

I'd make him rest too, no ball but it's good he'd like too.

LOL! The OTHER way, m'dear. Yes, it's LOTS of fun trying to take Sofia's temperature, she practically levitates out of the way! Directions: take thermometer, dip in Vaseline, gently touch dog's rear end....retreive thermometer from behind couch, wipe dog hair bunnies off thermometer....etc.

It does help that there are now those rubbery digital thermometers, they take less time to register and are much less scary, no glass, etc.

I would love another method. The ear thermometers for people don't work on dogs because dogs' ear canals are waaaay too long and curved. They do make them for dogs, but they are super expensive. I think asking your dog to hold a thermometer under the tongue is a bit much, ya think?

There are baby forehead thermometers now, but I don't think they'd work with a hairy dog. They are made for us naked apes.

My boyfriend has a laser he points at engines to see what temperature they are operating at. Hmmm, I wonder if we could shoot that laser beam down a dog's open mouth? It takes just a sec....hmmmmm!

Thanks, you guys.  Man this place is great at times like this.  lol

He actually looked up at his food bowl a bit ago (I put it up on the counter when he wouldn't eat, so romy wouldn't eat it,) but I'm definitely not giving it to him until the morning - and maybe just half of it to see how he keeps it down first.

They're waiting for me on the bed.  I think they're trying to tell me it's bedtime.  I hope we're able to get through the rest of the night without any mishaps.  I JUST washed my bedspread, too, of course.  [;)

OMG, if Willow saw a laser light, forget it, the games would begin!!
    • Gold Top Dog
Lexi--Any way you could take him for a little walk, nothing big?? For some reason, when Willow gets like that the fresh air seems to help too.  Then he'll probably just go right to sleep.  Well, if not, let us know how he is in the morning!

    Lexi--Is Winston better today??
    • Gold Top Dog
Poor baby... hope he's feeling better!

Really bad news.  My vet tech friend brought a parvo test over this morning and it was positive.  He actually ate this morning and was playing normally.  If she wouldn't have brought the test I wouldn't have known.

He has an appointment at the vet in 45 minutes.

    I hate this.
