balancing things out.. my dog is so smart

doesnt suprise me at all,,, just because we as humans are not aware of all the signals, doesnt mean the dogs miss them.  Your case as one illustration,  the seizure alert dogs and the experiments currently under way using dogs to identify individuals with certain types of cancer.

My dog is so smart that....

He knows that anyone who comes over to the house thinks its uproariously funny to see my bras paraded around the house. (NOT by me!)
He always know just how many treats are in my pocket.
And if I am not interested in playing ball, I just might be interested in playing kong, orca jack, tug, blue bunny, stick, mister bone, etc.

My dog is so smart that...

She always knows which visitors I don't really like all that much. She just sits and watches them.

She was the first dog in her beginner agility class to finish a short course perfectly. In total, 3 jumps, 2 tunnels, and a teeter.

She understands the snow falling from the air is cleaner than the snow on the ground, so she jumps up to eat it as it falls! [:D]

My dog is so smart she got out of a LOCKED campershell in ten minutes.... because she saw a dog walking by that she wanted to visit.

This was the first time she'd ever been in the back of the pickup. She doesn't ride there after that! (Dog is my Copilot)

    My dog is so smart!!

My girl (the mostly poodle) will come in the kitchen while I am cooking.  She knows that she is supposed to go in the living room while I am cooking because she gets underfoot and inevitably ends up getting stepped on.  Well, she will come into the kitchen and when I tell her to go in the living room she will run over to her food or water bowl and start eating like that's what she intended the whole time.  After that, everytime I look at her she makes sure she is hanging out at her food bowl so that she gets to stay in the kitchen with me.

Also, she follows me everywhere I go in the house.  She can't be without me.  So that means when I go to the bathroom she comes with me as well.  She knows that when I start to get toilet paper that I am almost done so she always jumps up and waits for me when I start getting the toilet paper.  FUNNY!!!

    That's Sam in a nutshell...

My dog is so smart that he whines at you when you are whispering to someone because he can't hear it. He knows if he steals things from the counter, he needs to slink away quietly and hide in the closet to eat them. He's really smart, but he does stupid things.

Mine is so smart, he knows the difference between my winter dress jacket and my winter "dog walking" jacket.

Jezebelle learned to open the latches on Keela's crate just by watching me open it. She hasn't let Keela out yet, just does it to retrieve Keela's kong to finish off the treat inside! I just hope she doesn't decide to start letting Keela out of her crate during the night!

I know this is for dogs, but my cat is so very smart and intuitive: I'm diabetic, and when my blood sugar is low during the night, she will meow and head butt me to wake me up. She'll also come alert me during the day if I am having a low blood sugar episode. Freaked me out the first few times she did it, but it is comforting to know that she will wake me up if I'm low. If anyone said, "Uh oh!" in the kitchen, the dog I used to have would sprint as fast as she could to try and eat whatever had dropped. If someone said "uh oh" in any other room, she'd leisurely stroll over to take a look... just in case.

    My dog is so smart:
He cries at the front door letting me know that he wants to go out and when I get up to take him out, he jumps up into the warm chair, curls up in a ball, and, I swear, laughs at me.

Zoey has learned most things on her own. She immitates us. It's cold were we live so we have a hallway entrance. When we go shopping we empty the car and place the bags there. then once inside we make trips to the kitchen with the bags. Zoey just started dragging the bags to the kitchen, so we gave her treats. A couple of days latter we came home and she had moved all my purses and my husbands backpacks (we do various outdoor activities) into the kitchen and was proubly sitting next to our stuff when we got home. i had to give her a treat.

She also figured out how to turn on and off the touch light and will sometimes turn it off just so you'll have to tell her to turn it on... that way she gets a treat.

I don't want to punish her, she is doing what she learned, and got a treat for doing before.

How do i get her to distinguish between when we want her to do things and when she just does them?
