How do your dogs feel about cats?(rwbeagles)

Just curious to see the different reactions to felines we might have on the board.

My hounds both are a bit afraid of cats, but curious. Our indoor cats are treated respectfully and sometimes sniffed with interest in playing. Outside, random cats are ear perked at, and then ignored.

Our Terrier mix would chase and kill any outdoor cat as vermin...and ignores them inside.

We have a few outside around the neighborhood and Charlie generally ignores them.  A few are very bold and try to approach him; however, I usually shoo them away as I know who the owners are and they don't take care of them and who knows what they are carrying!

Misty loves our cat (Tigger), but I don't think the feeling is mutual.  She loves to harass him and herd him!  We enjoy watching!  LOL

We had a BIG black bobtailed tomcat in our old neighborhood that would sit on lawns right out in daylight, and ATTACK passing dogs...no joke! Evil thing.....it'd puff up...and run at the dog and owner. It was hysterical to see full grown people RUNNING from this cat. No one would claim the cat...finally someone put a trap out and then I stopped seeing it. Can't say the neighborhood wasn't safer in his absence!

Bear wants to play with mine, though he gets so excited barking at them that they stay out of his way as much as possible.  When Bear first came home, his greeting from the cats was a lot of hissing and spitting; he flattened himself on the floor!

Other instances until the male cat adjusted: any time I raised my voice to Bear, Moose came running, hissing, spitting, and swatting at the dog.  Both my cats are declawed (came that way), but if they weren't, Bear's snout would've been shredded shortly after he moved in.  One night I was in the living room watching TV.  Cats were on the cat tree, Bear started chasing his own tail.  Moose flew off the cat tree and started attacking Bear for no apparent reason other than because the dog startled him.

Moose was also from the shelter, so not sure of his history.  He doesn't like fans, either.  He will go out of his way to walk as far away from them as possible - ceiling fans, floor fans - doesn't really matter.

Shari was raised with cats and never bothered ours, but anything outside better have been able to run really fast.

Ben HATES cats...I mean really hates them.  A long time ago I posted about my neighbour who let her cats go anywhere, including into other people's houses (through open windows and such).  When we first got Ben these 2 cats were bigger than him, and were for several weeks after that too....and they used to terrorize him...get into the house and swat/hiss at him...chase him around the house (and it's hard to catch a speeding cat!).

I have no doubt that I could train Ben to be ok with cats if I needed to, and I may need to in the future..but right now he doesn't get much exposure to them.  (The cats leave him alone now that he is bigger than they are.)

At first Kenya ignored the cats.  After two months, the cats have accepted that she's here for keeps.  They move out of the way when she's charging down the stairs to get out and potty, but they don't run from her or hiss at her just because.  She mostly ignores them.  One of her favorite places to sleep is under a window in our den.  The cats like to sit on the ledge of this window and when they are above her, she gets nervous and moves to another spot.  She likes to sniff their butts when they aren't paying attention and they like to sniff her nose and paws when she sleeps.  A few times, I've seen her play bow and try to engage a cat in play and that does NOT go over well!  It typically results in the cat hitting her in the face, hissing, and running away while Kenya looks confused and dejected.  She does not chase them and if I feel like she's bothering them by trying to instigate play, I call her off.

Rascal wants to be friends with cats, unless they're running away from him. If they're standing still, he'll run up until he's 3-5 feet away, stop, and start inviting play. He sticks his butt in the air, hops up and down, whimpers, gives little barks, gives play growls, and otherwise annoys the cat until the cat either chases him away or simply leaves. If the cat runs, however, it's fair game to chase! And if the cat reaches a dead end, Rascal stops a few feet away and tries to start a play session all over again.

Rocky just ignores the cats.  Brownie thinks the cats are "fast food"!  Dipper wants to play with the cats but he ends up stepping on them and he usually gets his nose scratched open.  It's sad, 65 lb dog gets beat up by a 10 lb cat!

Cherokee thinks she's the cat police. Just this morning Kovu was scratching on the couch, and I yelled at him to make him stop, so Cherokee charged at him. He skidaddled quite quickly. She'd never hurt them, but she definitely thinks it's her job to, well, police them. They're all scared of her (though Louie would never admit that..he pretends not to be afraid, but he won't walk past her, and yowls very loudly if she even looks at him).

Jaz confuses me. Sometimes he really seems to want to be friends with them, and other times it seems like he'd like nothing better than a kitty snack. He never would, but sometimes he gets a little glint in his eye. He's a lot easier to call off the chase than Cherokee is.

My husky has always seen cats as prey. She husky barely tolerates the cat being in her house and chases it whenever she can.

My aussie likes the cat and even grooms it. He wants it to play with him but the cat doesn't appreciate his attempts at play (nose poking etc). I think that if the husky weren't around, the cat might let its guard down enough to play.

Axl- Totally ignores cats, they might as well not exist to him.

    Chief- Same as Axl.

Culley- Would probably kill a cat if he got the chance, but doesn't lose any sleep over them. A simple "leave it" if he happens to catch a glance of a cat is enough and he minds his business.

    Ogre- Proven cat murderer.Sad

Butter- For some reason cats drive him insane. No other small animal, just cats. Whenever he sees our barn cats runs the fence line barking his head off as if he's never seen a cat before. If one of them happens to venture into the yard, he stands two inches away from its head and barks until the cat has had enough and leaves. He'd never kill one though, Butter does't have it in him to kill anything. If he ever decided to catch one he'd probably just lick it alot.

Pepito- Ignores cats, but if one got too close he'd probably get scared and run.

Maggie: Liked playing with and barking at my parents' cat, but wants to 'go say hi" to every other cat she sees; her "saying hi" involves running full tilt at them, skidding to a stop, sniffing, and then maybe smacking them with a foot.  If they hiss or swat at her she will nip them and chase them away.  She could hurt one by accident, but I don't think she really sees them as prey as much as fun toys.

Foster puppy: very interested, but it's similar to Maggie's interest - she doesn't know what to make of them.  If they hiss or swat she gets scared.

Caleb thinks cats are just small dogs, and should be played with (of course, the cat at Cherrybrook jwrestles with hima nd reinforces that view).  As an 8 week old puppy, he was a little too much for our 17 year old cat, so she retreated to the upstairs, where she still resides (I always kept a water dish in the upstairs bathroom, and moved her food dish there, too).  She hasn't realized yet that she can run behind the couch if Caleb is bothering her.  She was never the most social cat anyway.  Caleb wouldn't hurt her (intentionally), but he is a little over exuberant at times.
