What does your dog know?

    What does your dog know?

What does your dog - or dogs - know?  ...any tricks, positive behaviors, commands, athletic abilities, personal strengths, etc?

    Between the three, they know:

Sit, Come, This way, Over here please, Down, Wait, Leave it, Drop it, Move it, Let's go, Stop, No, No (in the form of a head shake), Off, Okay, Back up, Back, Quit it, Watch it (like move it), Ugh-Ugh (like no)

Sit pretty, Roll over, High five, Speak (verbal), Speak (non-verbal, hand signal)

They retrieve balls and sticks and whatever else you want to chuck around for them to fetch and bring back.  We have a long tube for them to run through and they all really enjoy it - sometimes they hide from each other and wait in it...thinking about getting some other inexpensive agility-type equipment for our yard and/or basement.

Willow is an athlete and excells at anything athletic, she's fast, strong, loves frisbee & leaps into the air with the greatest of ease, is an awesome swimmer, and has a solid gut and temperament.  She's also highly intelligent.

Oakley is a sniff-a-lot-agus, very grounded, calm, focused and slow moving like a turtle.  He loves climbing rocks and similar outdoorsy challenges.  He's the "First Responder" ...sniffing out boo-boos and such!  ...aka: Dr. Doakley, lol.

Myrika is still young but she has a budding natural herding instinct...she's herding her sister and brother at 7 months (actually before 7 months).  I'm probably going to support this somehow.

It was hard remembering them all...but fun...I'm sure I forgot some!  I'll be back to add more when I recall what the heck they are. [:D]

What about your canine compadres?  Any special brags?
    • Gold Top Dog
I remembered a couple more...kisses and stretches.  How could I forget kisses!  ...love those. [:)]
    • Gold Top Dog
Between my three, they know: sit, come on, go to bed, give me a kiss, get it, open, stay, stop (in the form of a really annoying "ank" sound that also works on the cats lol), no, where is it,  over here, up, get in (the car or tub), move...that's all I can think of off-hand. Those used most often are "go to bed," "move," and "ANK!"[:D]

Joey knows...sit...come (only when he doesn't have a good smell though.  He's like "Mooommmm, hold on.  I've got a good smell over here.")...stay...leave it (but he has selective hearing with this one too.  Especially with the mail lady)...down...rollover...shake...sit pretty.  And that's about it.

Miepie (our cat) knows that Daddy loves her and that anything she does will be considered funny by Daddy even if it's considered destructive by Mommy.  But she does respond when I hiss at her by running away.  Yes, I actually hiss like a cat to get her to stop doing what ever it is I don't want her to do.

Brutis (our other cat) is lazy and doesn't need to be told anything, cause chances he's already sitting.

Axl - Come, Sit, Lie Down, Stay, No, Off, Down, Move, Back up, Go (Runs to the door, or stares at his leash, then runs to the car door when we get outside) Do you want FOOD??? (He gets all bouncy and starts snorting and barking) Leave it, Drop it, Go get it, Who's there? (Starts running around the house looking for imaginary intruders) No biting, Be sweet (both mean to be gentle with some random little animal that happens to be bothering him) Cookie, Water, Walk, Park, Bed.

Ogre- Come, Sit, Lie Down, Move, Back Up, Give Paw (and the other paw,) Stay, Leave it, Drop it, Bring that here (brings me the object I'm pointing to) Sit still, No, Off, Down, Go get it, Who's there, Sit up (hand signal) No Mouth, No Biting, (when he's getting a little too mouthy)

Pepito - Go get it! All he can do reliably is fetch. And he knows "No." And "Come."

Sgt. Butter - I admit that I've gotten a little behind with his training. [:(] Right now he knows "No," and "Come." He's about 75% house trained...he would be better, but it's been raining like crazy the last few days and I admit I've missed a few potty breaks when it was just insanely nasty outside and he didn't really act like he needed to go. Entirely my fault.

The main thing I'm focusing on right now for him is socialization. We've been taking him everywhere we can, and barring that, he at least goes to Petsmart about 3 times a week. Every time he meets a stranger I give them a couple of treats to feed to him, so he's pretty darn happy about meeting new people now...even the vet. He's had slightly less exposure to strange dogs, but when he has met them he's had good experiences, so I'm not too worried. He'll probably start going to the dog park soon.

Other than that, he's working on leash training. He has a habit of stopping dead and digging his heels in when I won't go in the direction he wants. With LOTS of treats for going where I want him to go, he's improving, but he still has his rude moments. He also throws a tantrum if he sees a new person and I won't let him run to meet them...he'll pull until he just about chokes himself to death. But again, he's improving alot with the aid of treats. He can just be a stubborn little butthead when he wants to be. [8D]

But I REALLY need to start obedience with him. He's almost 10 weeks, and I feel awful that I haven't even started the basics with him yet. [:(]

ETA, Okay, I just got down to business and taught him to "sit" about 10 minutes ago. He got it after only a couple of tries. He's pretty darn smart. [:D]

Zoe: knows basic backyard agility.  She knows sit, down, stay (she has a really good sit stay and down stay) high five, shake, bang, roll over, hug (she puts her arms over my shoulders and leans her head against my face), jump into my arms (this has gotten harder since she is almost 8 now) come,

Gracie: sit, down, stay, bow, shake, high five, beg and come.

Maggie: Flyball, she can almost catch a frisbee, she knows some basic agility, sit, down, beg, and shake and come.

Lucy: basic Flyball, sit, down, shake, high five, beg, come, roll over, and basic agility

...stop (in the form of a really annoying "ank" sound that also works on the cats lol), ...and "ANK!"[:D]

LOL [:D]  ...your annoying ANK! sounds just like my UGH!

Willow knows "pretty girl" and "she" ...she always looks at us or comes when we say them.
Oakley knows "handsome boy" and "he" ...with the same reaction as Willow.
Both Willow & Myrika respond to pretty girl...it's too cute!  You might as well have called their name out.

You can also say just about anything in "baby talk" and the Goldens will come running. [:)]

It's so awesome what they know...either by being taught, natural instincts, or how they get to know us by really watching/observing and living with us.  They even watch facial expressions for communication.  Totally awesome.

Tucker knows lay down, go to bed, stay, come, no, give, foot (to have his feet wiped when coming in from a walk), eat, bone (he loves those dentabones), grandma's here (loves my grandma, runs headfirst into whichever window is closest), stay in the yard, back up, walk, what's that noise (for something loud that would normally scare him), cookie ....

    All of them know:

sit, stay, that'll do or come, lie down, wait, inside, outside, back up, move, stop, get it, give, drop it, with me, lets go, kennel, eat your food/drink your water, go to bed, go lie down, enough, OFF!, leave it, go potty, and get out.

Other commands several of them know:

shake, other paw, roll over, dead dog, "are you an army brat" - Bree only : crawls backwards on her belly, crawl (forwards on belly), say hi (wave), high five, spin, twirl (spin the other directions), right leg, left leg, around (around me), eights (figure eights between my legs), touch, BOING!! Zippy only - jumps up and touches my hand with his nose, speak, whisper (Ginger only), Are you TIRED - Nick and Ginger only, find it, load up.

Bree and Ginger - beginner agility commands

June - herding commands - come bye, away to me, walk up, lie down, steady, there, that'll do, and the beginning of a look back.

I'm sure there are more, but my brain is foggy this morning. These are just specific commands, not situational things like, "are you hungry?", or do you need to go OUTSIDE???".

Tasha only knows sit, shake, and no.  Ive only had her for a month tho and havnt worked with her much :/  She did learn sit and shake very quickly but usually will only do it for treats.  She already knew what no means when I got her.

    Bailey knows...

    no
drop it  (if im not by her)

    come'ere

    lay down
    stay
    high five
    shake
gimmie kisses  (the best one! - she plants them right on your mouth too)
    go eat
    go for ride??
go for walk?  (this and ride should only be used when prepared for psycho dog to come out)
    down (get off)
back up (get away from the door- like when im trying to open it and her nose is right there.... also works as "dont you go out that door" lol)
stand up (she will stand for a very long time, neat)
    go pee pee
    stop it (stops begging)

I almost forgot this one but I just turned around and said it lol - hush

    I think thats it.[:)]

I always go Bailey! and she looks at me all intently and I say "I lu you"  and she sort of closes her eyes while I say it and puts her head down and looks all comfy... almost like she really enjoys hearing that.

Oh, I forgot, Tasha fetches too.  Not on command though, it's a game of fetching toys.[:)]

I'll start out with what they both know...To me!, sit, down, stay, leave it, drop, hungry, food, wait, go, go around, left and go get (the other one's name.)

From there Xerxes knows...up, over, spin, shake, high5, bow, kiss, smile, heel, he'll dig on command, other side, he'll follow hand signals on a long lead to go left, right or recall, he knows the word "squirrel," go lay down, off, go potty, stand, on guard, stand down,

I know I'm forgetting like a hundred things though.

They also know: how to open up the food bin and steal food, how to countersurft without fear of getting caught (one of them keeps watch.) they can open doors or cabinets, they play pranks on each other (one has a toy the other wants so the second dog comes over to me and starts loving on me-the first dog comes over-dropping the toy in the process and second dog retrieves said toy and taunts the first dog with it.)

They learn by watching other dogs-Xerxes has about 5 or 6 different greeting rituals with other dogs-he knows which are appropriate in which situation.

Smartest dogs I've ever been around, if you see a bumper sticker that says what my signature says, it's true.  Pity the poor owner who doesn't know what he/she has.
