I think that this is avoidable. Just because your in a bad situation doesnt give you the right to do bad things and get enjoyment out of it. I wouldnt dream of sending emails to these guys families this has nothing to do with their mothers, fathers, spouses, children, and siblings but everything to do with them as a person. Just overall its frustrating
You make a very good point, but this isn't about the "right to do" but rather the desensitization that occurs when one fights a war. These young men and women are put in harms way 24/7. They have been asked to do that which they've been told is wrong their whole lives: take the lives of other humans. When this particular more is made circumstantial and a norm, how can it not affect the rest of the morals of that person.
Even you, I'm sure, hold the life of a human more sacred than the life of a dog. If a human is tasked to see the lives of other humans as disposable, what do you think the life of a dog means to them?
It's not about having the Right. It's about war, plain and simple. War turns things inside out. Morals get thrown out of the window the first time you aim, squeeze the trigger, and fire rounds downrange at enemy combatants. If that's not enough, after they are hit, the Marine, soldier, airman or sailor is also tasked with checking out the body-to see the very gore and harm that they have caused.
There was a study done at Stanford (I think) University in the early 70's or late 60's in which a dozen or so college students were taken and put into the roles of prisoner and prison guard. This study or experiment, if you like, was supposed to last a week or so. It was cancelled after a few days because the participants had progressed into their roles much more quickly than had been thought. See this [link

How does this study relate to the situation in the video? All moral precepts have been disintegrated. These are kids. Most of them aren't even old enough to drink legally. Their minds are fragile still and they've been socialized into one of the worst possible situations that exists. Yes they threw stones at a helpless dog. They've also seen helpless children get blown up by IEDs. The atrocities of war aren't limited to injuries inflicted by humans on humans, they also include dogs, cats, fowl, fish, and anything else that has ever breathed life.
