Everyone knows what they are getting into

    Lol....like heck  they know.

It's laughable to say anyone at that age "knows" anything about life...much less...death. IMO there's a very good reason the age for joining up is set right then. It is the peak of a person's feelings of immortality...and the cavern of their knowledge or comprehension of the finality of death and the real implications of choices made.

This was OT, I apologize...and I won't go further OT....but I did think this needed to be said.

Thank you for the clarification Gina.

And to think that these are Americans doing this, too. It wouldn't be tolerated in America, so why would they do it over there?! That poor dog... I have so much to say, but I think I'll stop there.

Do you think cruelty doesn't happen here in the US, far from it.
The Military tests on animals, just like companies test on animals with products we use everyday.

I think we shouldn't group all people together, that would be dangerous.
I still think, people who behave like that would have no problem torturing or killing a dog in a non military environment.

I think that is debateable. I am at "that age" that you are refering to. I do not think i am immortal and to be honust i havent since i was 8. I have seen my fair share of death. I do not look at war and know nothing You can not assume that.
Perhaps i have not experienced as much as you but i still live with KNOWLEDGE. And to say that we know nothing about life and death is ignorant. I have lost friends through crime, accidents, and disease. I know that they are gone. I dont sit there and pretend that they are on a long vacation.
NO BODY knows the real implications of choices they make until AFTER the choices are made. We live and learn. Thats the point of life. Why do you think we live with regret. We make choices based on feelings, facts, and our morals. It doesnt matter what age you are your always going to make right and wrong choices and feel the implications of them. As well the feeling of finality of death depends on the person. Again it doesnt matter with age. Ive watched mothers and fathers still keep their lost childs room exactly how it was when they last touched it. We extend the finality of death as long as possible, its a coping mechanism. It creates some hope for the ones that are still here.
Please dont assume. We are not laughable, we do know about life and death. The same amount that just about anybody else knows.

I don't think anybody of any age can "know what they're getting in to" in a situation like that unless they've already experienced a war zone. And while an extreme challenge like a war can bring out the best in people, it can also bring out the worst...

Gina, I'm more or less "that age," have also personally seen my fair share of death, and I agree with you.

That is totally unsat!   I was in the gulf (not during war time mind you)  and I saw my share of things that some troops engaged in.  Like scropion and hedge hog fighting.   It is the stress of being over there for some and for others they seen nothing at all wrong with it.  In my unit such actions were never tolorated.  The sad truth is that some people do not respect life.

No one knows what it is like until they have actually been there.  Until then it is like some sort of fantasy of being invincible, as if you alone are going to save the world.  I felt like that  too but then someone got killed in a training exercise.  Reality gave me a kick in the head.
