The Dumping Begins!

I'd like to take these people and put them thru a week of the treatment they give these poor animals

So would I. Exact vengeance upon those that cause the suffering. And that's why I would have a hard time being an ACO.

You asked the question in your OP of when will people quit thinking of these pet animals as disposable. I think the answer is not in this lifetime. To have that respect and forethought and consideration would appear to be beyond the ability of a lot of people and that's the nicest way I can put it. They are too selfish and impulsive and were brought up in a world of instant gratification and minimal responsibility and accountability.

Sorry I hadn't checked in, had a long night last night.
Yes Ron, I agree, the world has become too convenient! [&:][&o]

I was at our shelter yesterday and, so far, no dumps.  I can't believe that your cities already have Christmas puppies!!  Two weeks and the thrill is gone?

Nancy, it's not simply that my area shelters have Christmas puppies.  They have so many surrendered already that the directors have appeared on the local news begging people to hold on to the puppies for a few more weeks.  They are turning people away because they're FULL.  They hope that IF people hold on to the puppies they may decided to keep them; at the very least give the shelters a chance to adopt some out.

That is so sad, but nothing new, is it.  What a sad state of affairs when they're asking people to please hold on to their puppies a little while longer in hopes that they may become more attached.   My blood boils too, AJ.  And the hardest thing is that you can give money, adopt when you can, but it all seems so futile.  I know you can make a small difference, but the whole can be overwhelmingly depressing.

There was an ad on my local craigslist this morning...

The puppy is 7 weeks old and they got it "a couple weeks ago." So their Christmas puppy was 5 weeks old when it came home. And now it's "free to a good home" because they "didn't think it through well enough." I'll say! At least they can admit they made a mistake and aren't going the "My 7 week old puppy isn't housetrained yet and nips our child so he is clearly defective and it is not at all our fault!" route. And at least they are keeping it in the home until another can be found. Big bonus points there. They say they are continuing to train it while it's with them.

Meanwhile the pup is a pit bull mix. Someone bred their pit bull randomly or had an oops litter and decided to let the pups go at 5 weeks "just in time for Chirstmas!" I am nauseated.

When I feel overwhelmed, I think of the starfish story - you may not be able to save them all, but you can make a difference to those you touch.

Amanda - I cannot believe that one you did the wellness check on last week was dumped like that!  How idiotic.  Does your state allow them to be pursued?  Ugh.  Reminds me too much of a shelter I vol'd for in FL where they set up several outdoor pens w/dog houses just for that purpose - because they knew people would come in the middle of the night and dump the dogs, so they wanted them to be safely contained.  Sickening and cowardly!!

This is just very very sad! It is amazing to me that peolpe can be so dumb and cruel to animals. They just dont care as long as they get what they want at that moment.

Actually our state allows dog dumping to be pursued....unless the dog is left in a "safe" place. ie.. vet clinic, humane society, animal control  So we are stuck with them, so to speak.  The dobie is about 7 weeks old and is quite nervous around new people & experiences, but I decided that he had to come home with me tonight, for socialization & training purposes only[;)]  I have been looking to add another dobie to the house full time, so unless I run across a really, really great home, he will likely stay here.  I also went ahed & brought the two bcs to my parents house "for the weekend".  We have a working cattle ranch and mom & dad's blue heelers are getting older (9 &  11) so these pups can easily be trained to take over some of the work load.  I think it is a sad state of affairs that someone could justify dumping a dog with a "it just wasn't working out." (this was the dobie pup owners said when I called them)

Yes, most of the shelters in my area have a "Night Drop Off" pen set up for that purpose.  Problem is, there are people who, unfortunately still, engage in dog fights and these pens are often raided in hopes of stealing a bully.  Not too long ago, the ACC in Palm Beach county had something like 4 or 6 bullies stolen from the night pen.  You know the poor things are headed for a ring! Oh how exciting, 3 pups may have a permanent home.  Thank you, and your parents, for saving them.  What about the GSD, any hope of a new home?

The GSD is a little trickier, he is about 4-5 months old, food & dog agressive, and very fearfull.  He will try to bite without provocation.  Normally, this would mean he is a euthanasia case, but one of our kennel helpers, & I would both like to see this dog succeed.  So we have decided to see what kind of progress we can make in 2 weeks.  He will come home with me in the evenings & weekends, and will go to work with me during the day so that my kennel helper can spend time with him during work hours.  I am hopeful that he will turn around, but I don't want to get my hopes up to high, just in case it doesn't work out.

I am pretty sure that the SPCA here WILL NOT adopt animals out for the months of DECEMBER AND JANUARY.  This is their way to try to encourage people to think more about the life long commitment, and to avoid the 'after Christmas dumps'.
IMO it's a pretty good idea to avoid "Impulse adopting"

Amanda, I'm thrilled for those pups who have new homes and bless your heart for looking out for them and the GSD in that state of affairs. You know, of course, you must post Dober-puppy pictures!  Well, actually, you don't have to if you think it would compromise anyone's privacy.  But, Doberpuppy?!?!... I can't help but want to see...

At the shelter I volunteer at we've had bullies stolen right out of inside the shelter by people posing as volunteer dog walkers (made their own ID badges and everything). At another point, a group of guys tried to steal a pit bull puppy by distracting the staff with a kajillion questions about the cats (who are around the corner from the dog area), but fortunately a couple volunteers got wise to their plan and staked out the puppy pen. I'd say that at least 30% of the dogs in our shelter at any given time are pits and pit mixes, and the part of town the shelter is in is also very big on dog fighting. The biggest dog fight referree in the state lives mere blocks from the shelter.

Needless to say after the thefts and attempted theft, security has been beefed up a bit.

At the shelter Axl and Ogre came from, they don't have much of a problem with people stealing bullies- because the adoption fee is so low, and they do absolutely no screening, anyone can walk in, slap down a few bucks, and walk out with any dog they want. When I was there waiting to adopt Ogre, several EXTREMELY thuggish looking guys came in, and by the time they left, the shelter was clean of the 6 or 7 pits they had. Some of the pits there were scarred up from fighting, the few females had all recently had puppies, and none of them looked over a year. All of them were underweight and fearful as well- I would bet that none of them weighed over 20 pounds. They brought enough logging chains with them to haul a truck, wound them around the dog's necks, and drug them out of the shelter. It was so obvious what the guys intended to do with the dogs, and no one batted an eye- they have so many dogs there, and such a high kill rate, that if a dog leaves the shelter in something other than a trash bag, they're happy.

I felt so bad for those poor pitties...especially for a male I had considered adopting before I saw Ogre. Those chains were so heavy none of them could lift their heads or walk properly...it was like a chain gang of prisoners leaving the shelter. I'd be surprised if any of them are even alive right now. [:(]

Ratsicles, I'm absolutely appalled that your shelter would allow the pitties to leave under those conditions.  This might sound harsh, but I would rather have seen those pups leave in a trash bag.  Euthanasia would have been far kinder than the life that they were headed towards.  At least someone would have said a few kind words to the dogs before they died.

I'm just so shocked.  I can't believe it.  Poor puppies.  [:(]

We've been quiet thus far.  A bunch of dogs dumped before xmas - but only one in the past week.  (Apparently she's pregnant and we all know that pregnant people can't have dogs. *fuming*)  He's already got a home ... he was at the shelter an hour.  Yippee!!   One of the pre-Christmas-dumped dogs was adopted today and will be going home tomorrow.  Whooohooo!!

Hopefully it stays this way and we don't end up innundated.  *knock on wood*
