My parents have an 11yr old Doberman who was diagnosed with bone cancer some months ago. He's made it this far with our excellent vet's care (we have the same vet.) But, sadly, tonight, I think big Joe has made a turn for the worse. Of course, it's a Sunday and New Year's Eve, and our regular vet is closed today and tomorrow.
My parents are struggling, but I believe have reached the conclusion that they will keep him comfortable through the night and if no improvements, they will bring him to the emergency vet in the morning. If he eats or drinks enough to not look so defeated, they will hold off until Tuesday morning to bring him to their beloved vet. (We all doubt that will happen, but want to give him some rest tonight before bringing him to an unfamiliar place, etc.) Either way, Gracie's Uncle Joe will not be with us very soon.
"Uncle Joe" helped raise Gracie the first month I had her - he was a great mentor to her in doggie socialization and good behavior. They continue to be the best of friends, but Gracie has not been able to see him for fear they would try to play and Joe would surely break his fragile bones. I don't know how she will understand that he'll be gone soon... but I'll try to explain it to her.
Please, send thoughts and prayers that Joe will be comfortable in his passing.
