    Prayers please

    My parents have an 11yr old Doberman who was diagnosed with bone cancer some months ago.  He's made it this far with our excellent vet's care (we have the same vet.)  But, sadly, tonight, I think big Joe has made a turn for the worse. Of course, it's a Sunday and New Year's Eve, and our regular vet is closed today and tomorrow.

    My parents are struggling, but I believe have reached the conclusion that they will keep him comfortable through the night and if no improvements, they will bring him to the emergency vet in the morning.  If he eats or drinks enough to not look so defeated, they will hold off until Tuesday morning to bring him to their beloved vet.  (We all doubt that will happen, but want to give him some rest tonight before bringing him to an unfamiliar place, etc.)  Either way, Gracie's Uncle Joe will not be with us very soon.

    "Uncle Joe" helped raise Gracie the first month I had her - he was a great mentor to her in doggie socialization and good behavior.  They continue to be the best of friends, but Gracie has not been able to see him for fear they would try to play and Joe would surely break his fragile bones.  I don't know how she will understand that he'll be gone soon... but I'll try to explain it to her.

    Please, send thoughts and prayers that Joe will be comfortable in his passing.

    A big hug for you and your family. I hope he can make it until Tuesday. If not, then may his trip to the Bridge be painless and quick.

    One thing being married twice has taught me is how to listen. If I was there, I would be listening to all you guys. No way to "fix" it, just listening because I've been there, done that. More than I care to count.

    Oh, absolutely.  Gracie's "Uncle Joe" are in my thoughts and will get a special mention in my prayers.  Take care and know Gracie will also be ok in time.

    Thank you all.  I'm... I don't even know what to say..  Joe has passed on.  He died about 15 mins ago.  In the arms of my parents, on his dog bed, in his own home.  This has been a horrible night.  But we're thankful that he wasn't alone.
    Joe had separation anxiety and his need to always be with someone  is what kept him from being adopted before my parents came along.  My dad, retired, was ready to have a companion around - after waiting 17yrs since our last Dobe died.  They tear at your heart like that, these relationships with our dogs.
    I just needed to connect with other dog people who understand what we're going through.  Thank you for keeping my parents and dear Joe in your prayers tonight.

    I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing.  He was home with those he loved, and that has to be good.  Run free now fella, knowing you had a good life and a loving family.

    Oh what wonderful parents you have.  Joe was so love and his last gesture was to comfort you.  I am so sorry for your loss and I say good bye to your true friend and Gracie's mentor.  The pleasant memories will stay with you and parents always.  Take care tongiht.

    Very sorry Joe had to leave you all tonight, but glad he was able to be ushered through in the arms of those he loved and trusted most.  The timing is difficult, I know, but he was where he would want to be and not alone.

    Wishing you all peace and comfort and peace and release from pain for Joe.

    Here's a picture of him doing his favorite thing - hanging out on the boat.

    I'm so sorry for your loss.  Joe was a beautiful dobe!  You will all be in my prayers.  {{{HUGS}}}

    Joe looks so regal.  He doesn't need a skipper's hat to shows who's the captain of the boat.
