Breed Question

I suggest, if the OP, or the person considering breeding or the firend is still logging on here from time to time that they check out the thread "what is the opiste of a byb" (their sp not mine!)  Some wonderful information there and sheds some light on why responsible breeders charge more for their dogs and why bybs are able to get away with charging less......  Also I put a flippin' CRACKING post on there deserving of yet another quality street if you ask me.....

You crack me up! It WAS a good post though. A good thread all around, in spite of the rather creative spelling in the titlehttp://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=226980

I'm not sure which breeds, other than the chow are considered primative breeds....close to their origins, or at least closer than other breeds.  These could be among those "primatives"

i think i remember reading that beagles are a primitive breed.

    wait..here i googled it:

    •Basenji

    •Canaan Dog

    •Ibizan Warren Hound

    •Pharaoh Hound

    •Thai Ridgeback

then another site said Spitz breeds.

Has anyone else read Animals in Translation (can't rmbr author, an autistic lady, Something Temple possibly) ??

There's some interesting stuff in  there about the links between physical attributes and character traits.  For instance, dogs that look more "wolf-y" are generally better at howling at giving you the "hard eye".  Sibes and Mals fall into this category.  It doesn't mean they are wolf hybrids though - just that by retaining some of the physical attributes of the wolf, some behavioural ones remain also.  You dont have one set of genes for how you look and a completely different set for how you behave is what I think the book is trying to say.

Is this what is meant by "primitive" breeds?  Or am I barking (haha) up the wrong tree here?

Perhaps starting another thread in the breeds, or anything and everything, area would yield interesting discussion. I'd like this thread to remain on topic. Thanks!

I might have missed what area you're in. But tell me again...

I would be glad to help you find a "Husky" rescue in your area.

As for your original question:  A mal/husky cross will need copious amounts of exercise and mental stimulation in order to be happy.  You're looking at 2-5 miles of running every other day just to keep this dog in shape and to prevent digging, destruction of property, escapism, and other boredom related behaviors.

VERY much agree with you here!  My dog runs like crazy, along beside me while horseback riding!  He's a bit faster than the horse, so it can get hairy at times!!!!

I hope you don't have cats, if you do, you'd better start thinking about where they'd hide.

I find my husky and my cat very close.  They were youngins together, and even share a mat to sleep on at night! [;)]

Your dog will be prone to sunrise howling, so if your neighbors don't like noise you might consider moving.

Mine is only whiney.  How can you train THAT out of them??? LOL

Your dog will shed.  And when you think he's done shedding, he'll lay down more fur than you thought you knew possible.

Oh man, are you right there!!!!!  Add that along with a GS dog!!!!  There is enough dog hair laying around here to clothe 6 or 8 hairless dogs!!!!

There is no fence that can stop a husky when it wants to escape.  Your dog will be quite stubborn, and will try to train you rather than the other way around- So basic, and advanced obedience are necessities rather than accessories.

So true.  We learned that the hard way!  When he doesn't get enough excercise he runs. [:@] NOT his fault though!

I just want to add here that I totally understand your emotions about back yard breeders.....and agree with you all 100% that it's wrong.  However, I will say that although in your definition, the owner of the bitch IS a backyard breeder, I still can't see Kayjun in that light.  I think that she was merely approached by someone who wanted to breed her bitch to Kayjun.

Anyhow, I just wanted to say I am thoroughly enjoying this board.  Finding out lots of great information.  And on a side note, if I lived in the same province, I would take her to get a dog/puppy in a heartbeat! [;)]
