Am I?

While I cannot really do anything about posts in areas I don't moderate I can say that singling out a member on another post is probably not really necessary.

I can certainly see you wanting input/reassurance on the situation in general..."dog sick and I am observing does that make me a bad owner?" stuff like that is what the Health boards are for....but....

IMO making another post in another area, singling out a member who's posts you might have felt were insensitive...meh...
probably would have been better to PM or ticket the post and contact a moderator about it.

I will ask that any further posts to this thread NOT be directed at the person the OP refers to...but to the situation and the actions they themselves might take in the same instance. I do not think that calling out anyone is really necessary (but feel free to use PM or such as this seems to be between 2 members and not a group or anything like that). To that end I am removing references to the person and suggesting the OP contact Jaime if they still have an issue with them or PM the person in question.

I hope your dog continues to improve and I hope this forum continues to be a place to share, learn, and debate civilly.

I would have done the same thing. Since she is acting fine and keeping down water. I would have just kept a close eye on her just like you did. You say she threw up again tonight so you are calling the vet in the morning. I dont see where you are doing anything wrong. Sounds like your a great mom to me! I hope she feels better soon. I hope you let us know how she is doing.

I think that everyone needs to realize that when they post on a public forum they are opening themselves up to public comments.  There is always the risk that you are going to read something you're not going to like.  It's the nature of the beast.

Also, there is an edit button.  If you type something and then want to take it back, then you can do so.

I agree that it's a public forum and we aren't always going to like opinions we read. However, we also have an obligation to be civil to other members. I think it's really easy to jump to conclusions and judge people rather than giving them the benefit of the doubt. I know I've been guilty of being too judgemental before and I'm really trying to be open minded/nice/helpful now.

As far as the situation... Jenny I definitely don't think you're a bad owner and I'm glad to hear that your dog is getting better![:)] I probably would call the vet the first or second day that my dog vomited. But, it really depends on so many factors- how many times the dog vomited, whether it looked like bile from an empty stomach, whether they were keeping water down, how they were behaving otherwise. etc.

I have actually seen very few cases of people truely being nasty.  People just need to relax.  It's just an internet dog board.  To see TRUE nastiness you have to visit some choice horse boards.  [8D]

I used to call the vet constantly when I first got Willow.  But, that was because I was nervous and unsure about what would be "normal" or not.

But, as time went by I got used to mild, common illnesses like upset stomach.  I now, after many calls and trips in, know to stop food for 24 hours, try the bland diet, maybe an over the counter remedy.  And, if things don't improve within 48 hours or so to call and bring her in.  For Willow if she's not better within 48 hours after all the above things were tried she needs something more.

I don't have issue with people not going to the vet because they feel like they can handle what's going on at home.  It's when they don't want to go because they have no money or the time or something like that that it bothers me.

nope not at all. i'm not familiar with the post you are referring to, but the fact that you cared enough to ask for advice about the vomiting leads me to believe you are a responsible pet owner. it may have been the better choice to go straight t o the e-vet, like i said i don't know what the situation was, but at least you were making an attempt to figure out what was wrong. alot less can be said about alot of pet owners. you can't be perfect all the time and you cant just rush to the vet all the time either.

i would forgive and forget, or at least just forget. and i hope everyone keeps in mind that just because all you see is a computer screen, doesnt mean there isnt a real person on the other side with real feelings.

I looked at the thread in question and Jenny was basically called a bad dog owner. That's like telling someone they're a bad parent- one of the ultimate hurtful thing to say. I'll make a note not to visit horse forums. lol And speaking of nasty forums, don't ever, EVER visit the myspace forums unless you want to be flamed beyond belief. [;)] People will jump on you for anything, no holds barred with cursing and name calling, not moderated and go to absolute war. Yeah, I didn't visit those forums too many times before learning not to go back there. lol

Well out of curiousity I had to check out the original post.

I don't think you're a bad owner, hey everyone's unsure of what to do sometimes.

But you asked for people's opinions on the vomiting, got a straight-forward response, and in my opinion you really overreacted to it.

Called the vet, they said its not a big deal and this happens all the time w/ dogs and cats. They said no food today, chicken and rice or ground beef and rice tomorrow. The lady said her cats going through the same thing right now too and as long as she's playing, drinking water and wanting to eat there's no need to bring her into the vet.

And I've noticed the change. [:D] I, too, had to change the way I post, not because anyone directed me to but because my meaning would get lost. I tend to write the way I talk. To hear me in person might make you laugh but written as a statement without signifiers (cue the laughtrack) can be taken the wrong way. Even to this day, I may post something, then go back and edit it out, in case it might obfuscate the meaning or invite a response in a totally wrong direction.

or a parenting board. i used to frequent one, but it was just  too catty for my tastes. i figure i am safe from the cattiness on the dog forum [:D]

i hope miss maggie is doing better today!

Hey, I know a *scrapbooking* board that can get downright U*G*L*Y! Happens all the time.

And as far as the vomiting situation - I would have done the EXACT same thing. Our pediatrician always says how my kids *act* is more important that any of their other symptoms. She said a low fever or a little vomiting in a child acting lethargic is far more concerning than a high fever or a lot of vomiting in a child who is alert. I judge my dogs symptoms the same way. If the dogs are otherwise happy and healthy, I treat the symtoms at home. If my dogs behavior is off, I call the vet.

I think a lot of us are the same way with the furry kids that we are with the two legged furless ones. [:D] Some people rush off the the doctor at the first sign of a sniffle, others wait awhile and see how it goes.  Doesn't make you a bad mom.
