Am I?

    Am I?

So what do you people think? Am I a bad dog owner?

I asked advice about my dog who has been throwing up..

Well ****** used that to bash me and basically say that I am a bad dog owner because I didn't rush my dog to the vet. I'm actually really upset, I've never had anyone tell me that I am a bad dog owner, everyone sees me with my dogs and always tells me that I am a great person and they wish there was more animal lovers out there like me. Maybe not running her to the vet was a bad judgment call on my part...but everyone screws up now and again

I didn't see the original post to make judgement, but whatever it was, I hope the doggy is ok now and I am sure you'll use it as a learning experience.

For what its worth, Zoe has thrown up and I have not taken her to the vet.  I usually call the vet and explain everything and he lets me know if I should bring her in or not.  Many people on here have had dogs throw up and they have not run to the vet.

I probably would have done the same thing you did if my dog was acting fine otherwise. Sometimes a wait and see approach is okay, sometimes it's not. Only you know your dog well enough to know when she's acting 'off'.

IMO **** has been excessively harsh with several posters lately. I think she's forgotten what it's like to be a inexperienced owner. It's sad because she and others here have so much information to share, but it doesn't do any good if people get attacked and won't come back here [sm=2cents.gif]

FWIW I don't think the first comment was excessively harsh - but the second... [8|]

What are you feeding your dog?
    Is it a new food?
How long have you been feeding it?

Thank you Sooner..I really feel like a horrible person right now for not rushing my dog to the vet, but like you said "only I know my dog well enough" and she definately hasn't been acting off, so I figured I'd keep an eye on her and see what happens. I was going to call the vet tomorrow anyway, I just wanted advice from experienced dog owners on here. Unfortunately some people just can't understand...

I for one know that you love your dog or you would not be on this forum. But  I would call the vet to see what they say. If they think that you should bring her in by all means take her in. I`d rather have a well pup at home then the money in my pocket. I hope your baby feels better very soon.

I agree Mollymoo, and it's really not the money that's a huge issue. I just didn't see a point in taking her in to the vet if I didn't necessarily have too, since she's acting completely normal otherwise. She's playing w/ the fiance right now. I definately would never want my dogs to suffer in any way!

Since I don't know you nor have I followed your posts,  I cannot really comment on your dog ownership skills but I have to honestly say that I think you blew **** responce out of proportion...

SO here is my honest opinion...I do not think that **** was overly harsh with her first responce to you ...I actually see a lot of care and concern for your dogs well being in it.  BUT I believe that something in her reply (that wasn't intended to be a dig) caused you to became  too sensitive with your reply back to her "apparently..." thus her responce back to you...

You have to know that when you are on a forum you are going to get some replies you are not happy about that just comes with the territory...

Honestly Jen, I would just let it roll off your back [;)

    Hope Maggie is doing OK![:D]

I'm so sorry you felt that way, I didn't think negatively at all when I read your post.   I read a quote once and I can't remember who said it " the best teachers remember and understand what it's like to be learning" (to echo Sooner :))  Regardless of how you feel about what a poster asks, I just can't ever believe it is ok to treat someone poorly.  Afterall, they will be much more likely to follow your advice if you are nice.  Hiding behind "i'm just giving you my opinion, or if you didn't want to hear the truth you shouldn't have posted" is never an excuse for poor behavior.  It's too easy to be cruel hiding behind a computer, as it has been said here before, treat others how you would in person and hopefully that is kind and considerate.

I feel the same way, the first response was actually a good one, but your response to her was a little sensitive and her response back was not necessary either.

If your dog was not holding down water and she had been vomiting for a few days then you might be looking at a really serious situation.  Thankfully that was not the case.  I had a cat who was throwing up everything including water for 24 hours and she ended up in the hospital for a week and on an IV.  It was a hairball causing a blockage and cost me a pretty penny but once I decided there was something wrong with her and they sent her home and she still wasn't OK, I took her back in again and she ended up there for a week being force fed and on an IV.  I truly think she was thinking of your dogs best interest in her first response.  Only YOU really know your dog though and know when it really warrants going to the vet.  You know when your dog is acting normal otherwise more than anyone who can't see how your dog acts on a day to day basis.  Like for instance, Harley used to throw up bile a few times a week but was totally normal otherwise.  I changed his routine and got him eating a whole meal at a time and it fixed it, but if I had just posted that he had thrown up a few times that week I probably would have been criticized too when all it really was is that he was getting too hungry.  As Spiritdogs said though, blockages are REALLY GNASTY and your dog would probably not hold anything down.

Sometimes things come across wrong in a forum...especially when we are worried and maybe a little more sensitive to our furbabies ailments.  I hope your pupper is feeling much better tonight!  I don't think it makes you a bad dog owner at all or you wouldn't care enough to be here.

    Shelly,
I believe this is the sentence that probably caused Jen to get a little upset: "As it is, I am wondering why you would wait three days before calling your vet."
I can see how, if I came here and I wasn't a frequent poster on these forums, this might offend me, especially if I was unsure about something going on with my dog.

Thanks! I am a little sensitive I guess and my first comment was uncalled for as well. You know how you just say something out of anger, then a minute later your wanting to take back what you said? That's exactly how I felt. I also could've worded my first post better, because I have been watching her and monitoring her, but when your on the computer and typing its really hard to say everything your thinking. I am glad I made this post also because I got some really good advice from some really great people!

The way I read the OP's first post was that the dog vomited x2 on Friday, none on Sat., x1 Sun. eve. and x1 tonight. Is that correct? . I probably would have called the vet this morning, after the dog had vomited Sunday evening, but I can almost assuredly tell you what they'd say "Withold food for 24 hours, give Pepto (giving you the dosage requirements for your dog's weight) and go the ER vet or come in immediately if you see any behavioral changes, extreme lethargy or diahrrea (well, spelled correctly that is!).   That's because that's what they told me when Gracie threw up 3 times in one afternoon/evening. Who, BTW was fine within hours.

Good, i am so glad you feel better..sometimes it just helps to get some advice and a different perspective on things. We all know what it can be like when you are a worried doggie mommy (or daddy)...it is very stressful at the moment![:D

Take care of that sweet girl Maggie![8D]

Thanks everyone for their help! I needed it as I was/am concerned about Maggie. The vet is going to get a phone call from me tomorrow morning :)
