Is your dog a "breedist"?

it's funny, but Kaiser doesn't like other GSDs. Last time i let him go to the dog park (never again) he got into a nasty fight with another GSD. The only breeds of dog i've ever noted him to be absolutley perfect with are boxers and dobermans...maybe because they're smaller and quicker and they let him chase them. He also has a high tolerance for my mom's very dog-aggressive JRT.

Kota does not like the bully breeds (I think it's the ear cropping) nor black dogs that are bigger than him.

Floyd has a problem with Boxers. The first Boxer he met (to my knowledge) was 21 months old, cropped, intact, and ran straight at him and boxed him. Floyd snapped at the Boxer who boxed him again. Floyd then preceded to bite him in the jowl.

Floyd loves Irish Wolfhounds. He's utterly fascinated by their size.

Sam doesn't do the URRG I HATE THIS DOG by breed, but he won't play with GSDs or Boxers. He will, however, regardless of the dog, run up to any cinnamon (I think) colored dog with a thick coat. there was an oopslitter of 20(!) 20 or so pound dogs (! again) and all of them go to our dog park. they are chow/pit/labs, and he loves all of them and all those breeds.

That's kind of a Chi trait....breeders call it being 'clannish'...close with their own but not others so much!
Beagles can be like that too.

I heard from a vet once that quite a few dogs feel uncomfortable around boxers and that it may be because of their play style and the way they "box" with their paws...I think that sounds like a pretty valid argument [:)]

Stanley was a stray when Animal Control picked him up, so quite possibly he has a bad experience w/ a Boxer & associates other Boxers with that experience. It'll certainly be a pain in the butt to be on the lookout for Boxers all the time since they're not uncommon around here, but glad to know at least I'm not alone!

The comment about huskies was very interesting.  Sammy's best friend is my brother's husky.  He has so much fun playing with her.  His tail starts wagging like crazy whenever I get off at the freeway exit near my brother's house.  So while he loves all breeds of dogs, if there is a husky at the dog park he just latches on and follows the dog everywhere.  He absolutely associates husky with best friend and fun playtime.  Usually the huskies are more than happy to play with him too.

Now that I think of it Rory does get pretty excited with fluffly dogs. She plays with a husky and akita all the time so maybe she equates them with fun.

Pofi gets along with most dogs rather wonderfully - he's very good at scaling his play style.  Plays with small dogs and pups more delicately then he plays with a full grown Akita or Dane.

But there have been a few dogs in the neighborhood he's been uncharactristcally aggressive toward.  One of them is a terribly, terribly timid Bernese, female.  The other was a wonderfully sweet, elder male Great Dane. Zero, the Dane, was 9ish when Pofi was still a puppy and it really embarassed me how crazy Pofi went trying to get a piece of him wherever we saw him.  Walking on leash, even if we were on opposite sides of the street, in our yard when Zero walked by, and in our friend's back yard where Po had frequent play dates with a Lhasa.  Zero was also a good friend of the Lhasa and would have play dates in the yard, but the owners were way too afraid to bring Zero in if Pofi was there.

It is safe to say Zero's health was pretty steadily declining while Pofi was becoming a mature and large-ish dog.  I've wondered if he sensed that and felt compelled to challenge and it makes me wonder if the Berner has any health issues. She's more middle aged, if I recall correctly - about 5 ish.

Maggie likes calmer dogs, but I havn't had her around a lot of other breeds to know how she likes them. I know she doesn't really like large dogs, and is very cautious around little puppies. We petsat for a pom mix for a while and they were both shy at first, but after they warmed up to each other they loved to play.  I think she does reconize dogs that look sorta like her, but that is probably more because her best friend is a lhasa too.

Huskies carry their tails over their backs which is a leader trait to other dogs, so, needless to say we have had stare downs in this house with 3 German Shepherds, 1 Husky/ Mal. mix, and 1 Husky/ Chow mix.

My 13 and 7 year old Shepherds are still in charge though, rough play is involved[;)]

Bevo only wants to play with breeds he is very regularly.  He would prefer play with other dobies (my boss has 2, co-worker has 2, I have 2 fosters).  He also likes boxers, dachshunds, aussies, and BCs.  He ignores other breeds, and has no desire to play with them.

Shooter the dachshund goes straight to the big dogs to play.  His best friend is my uncle's great dane.  There is nothing more entertaining than seeing Shooter (8lbs) hanging off of Gracie's lip (130lbs).  Shooter turns into a "yappy little dog" when other small dogs try to play with him.

Max likes boxers, and I assume it's because he's part boxer, and when he was younger he would try to box every dog he played with, much to their annoyance. He loves playing with boxers, and he loves one of the ones in the neighborhood (who is the most poorly bred boxer I have ever seen, but he's a nice dog). He likes every dog he's met though. If they won't run around he'll run around them, he likes bully breeds who are rough like he is if they're small, he'll get on his belly to be at their height. He was really particularly fond of goldens for a while, because there was one in his puppy class who he played with, and my sister's friend has one he played with. He's not as eager to play with them now since the ones in the neighborhood are all nasty, including one who snapped at him, and the rest snarl and growl, but they aren't ruined for him or anything.

Russell doesn't like Boxers or Labs... really he doesn't like any medium to large dog with a lot of energy and most often those are Boxers or Labs. [;)] In general the smaller the dog, the more comfortable Russell is.
