Is your dog a "breedist"?

    Is your dog a "breedist"?

I've recently found out that Stanley might be [:(]

Last night, DH and Stanley were out playing in the park off-leash. Stanley spotted two Boxers, and before DH could even stop it, Stanley went and attacked the two Boxers. Fortunately there was no real bite involved, but DH was still freaked out! Then I remembered one of very few times Stanley was involved in a fight in a dog run, and that was with a Boxer too. It was probably the only fight with a neutered dog that he was ever involved in.

Is anybody else's dog like this w/ certain breeds? Any solutions you've found other than avoiding the situation?

Maybe it has something to do with their natural stance. They pose such a confident image, it may be threatening to her! Just specualtion

Was your dog perhaps attacked in the past by a boxer and has a negative association with them?   One of mine was attacked by a Chinese crested, now he's a little on edge when he sees one.  He whimpers and whines,  But when it becomes obvious that he's not going to be attacked again, he's able to relax.

On the flip side, two of mine LOVE Golden Retrievers...Any and all of them, pretty much.

OH YEAH, both of our dogs go after EVERY golden retriever there is.  I DO NOT know why.  Wish I did.  Otherwise, my guys are really well mannered and well behaved.  SIGH~[:-]

Giz seems to think that dogs larger then her are scary.  She was attacked as a puppy by two GSDs and her best dog friend, who was in the same attack, was torn apart during the attacke and had to get staples down her back. Now any large dog will set off a behavor that looks very aggressive.

It's more fear anxiety and I've been working with her on this for a very long time.  She's fine with and very submissive to dogs smaller then her and never seems to growl or act mean towards them, it's only the big dogs.  But any dog, once she get to know the dog she is fine with it and plays nicely, it's the greeting that is scary.

My dogs like their own breeds. Pepito snarls and runs from all strange dogs EXCEPT other chihuahuas. Axl gets stiff legged and bristly at everything except other bulldogs. Ogre ignores all strange dogs, but if he sees anything that looks remotely like him, he gets reeeally focused and starts wagging.

Tookey, who is a small terrier mix, probably 25 pounds and seems to have no fear of any big dog (except Gracie, who annoys him greatly!) HATES puppies and acts afraid of them! Once, when I lived in a townhouse, he ran out the front door and there were two beautiful white GSD's in the neighbor's yard. He circled them and then chased each one off but not too long after than when we were on a walk, a chihuahua PUPPY was out and tried to greet him and Took ran off with his tail between his legs!

Romeo does not like poodles of any size.[&:]

Alot of dogs have problems with Boxers, mine are included-but with reason.

Xerxes was "bounced" on by a Boxer when he was a pup.  Because of this he has a "need" to dominate all boxers and let them know that he's faster, stronger (though not necessarily) and his teeth are sharper.  If an unknown boxer is in the park, I will remove Xerxes for this reason, as he is unrelenting and somewhat merciless.

Gaia was raised with show Mastiffs, and from what I can discern, they must have been brindled because she hates every brindled dog she encounters.  She will harass and harangue them until they retaliate and then she will goad them into a fight-if I were to let it get that far.  I don't.  Since there are a high proportion of brindled boxers in my area, she will go after them as well.

Needless to say, I am constantly on the lookout for boxers and will leash and leave if any show up.

Kiya really only likes basenjis.  She tolerates dogs of other breeds, but recognizes something special about other basenjis (almost as if other dogs aren't even the same species).  She doesn't like female basenjis though, just the males.  She's not aggressive toward others, but I do watch her closely at the dog park since I know she gets impatient with other dogs.

Sam loves all dogs, cats, critters, people... you get the idea.

Max is sometimes a little "iffy" around really small dogs.  I'm not sure he knows the difference between a small dog and a squirrel. If we're walking I just have to shorten his leash and remind him "small dog - no jumping." Other than that, he's not particularly breed specific. At the dog park a few weeks ago he was playing with a border collie, and that dogs owner pointed out to me that they were taking turns herding each other.

Someone once told me that if I go to the leash-free park and there's even one Husky already there, that I should leave immediately.  They told me that Huskies pack togther like wolves and attack other breeds of dogs--that's what they do  *eyeroll*
Mine seem to know what they are. They definately 'pay their respects' when they encounter another breed member.  It's a brief sniff, a head turn, and that's about it.  Age seems to be the determining factor in who they like--they like dogs around their age.
(Except the dumb 2y/o one who doesn't understand why the 10y/o huge, nearly crippled hound mix doesn't want to play with him.  This is his favourite freind.)

    Honestly,
I have one dog that is fear aggressive and this not only includes people but occasionally other dogs and my female is TERRIFIED of other dogs.

The ONLY dogs that both of my guys like are other greyhounds.  Most greys are so use to being with their own breed that they will seek them out if in a dog park, etc.  My guys are kind of snobs about accepting  any other breeds but their own…

Let me just say, if it's on a leash, Ella doesn't like it.
I don't care if it's a boxer (which she DESPISES my neighbor's boxer) or a chow. She has an absolute FIT if we cross someone else walking a dog. At least, this is what I'm thinking her issue is. We pass other dogs that are behind fences and she doesn't care, even if they run up, she'll walk over and sniff them and be fine. But if that dog is on a leash, she gets WAY excited.

I think she's afraid of tiny dogs, though. But I wouldn't want one to challenge her, she could do some SERIOUS damage to a tiny dog, and probably faster than I could blink.

Not only can dogs make negative associations by looks (or breed, if you will), they can make friends the same way - often, you will find dogs of like play styles, or like coat textures, etc. gravitating toward one another.  There are also dogs with smooth coats that enjoy tugging on the hairy dogs - go figure.  But, if your dog was attacked by a Boxer, he could certainly assume that those dogs are not ok.
