Someone tried to steal my dogs!!!

Yesterday, my husband and I were doing housework.  The basenjis really don't like the vaccuum so I had let them out in the backyard while I vaccuumed.  My husband was working in the office with the window open.  Somehow, over the noise of the vaccuum, he heard our gate open and close.  He ran out of the office and asked me if the dogs were in the backyard.  I told him yes, and he told me what he heard.  I ran to the backyard while he ran out front.  He saw a group of teenagers walking away from our home holding Kiya!!!  Sammy was nowhere to be found.  My husband confronted them and they told him they were trying to catch our dogs for us because they escaped.  He asked how they escaped and they claimed they had scaled the back wall to our home.  We know this isn't true since it is a 6 foot cinder block wall and they simply are incapable of doing it, plus he heard the gate open.  My husband grabbed Kiya back from them and they scattered.  We put Kiya back in the house and went searching for Sammy.  It took us over an hour, and I have to say it is not easy running around the neighborhood at 8 months pregnant!   Fortunately, Sammy had found some kids to play with in a park on the other side of our neighborhood and those kids were able to help us catch him.  We are very lucky we were able to get them both back safely.

Needless to say we have now bought a lock for our gate.  We never leave them outside when not home, but this happened when we were home and they had only been outside a few minutes.  I'm not sure if we should call the police and report it or not, since we don't know who the kids are.  I really wish I knew who their parents were so I could call them.

Definitely call the police and the animal shelter to let them know that there are kids going around doing this!  This may not be the first time and I'll bet my bottom dollar it won't be the last time they try it unless they know that there are consequences.  The police might even be able to help you figure out who they were.

Scary stuff, don't mess around with it.  I have zero tolerance for that stuff.

I would also call the police and local shelters.

How upsetting.  I am glad you got them back unharmed, I would call the police and the shelters as well.

    Take care of yourself.

Yes please do call the police and the animal shelter.  At least then they will both have it on file if this happens to someone else.  Glad you got both of them hhome safe.

That sounds both frightening and aggravating! Definitely call the police and find out who these kids are. No doubt you'll see them around the neighborhood after this and wonder what they're up to. You'll feel better if you know a policeman has read them the riot act! And their parents, too!

    Definitely call the police!

Wow that's scary. I can definately see why somebody would want to steal your dogs though!

Wouldn't surprise me at all if the teens decided they can liberate a dog, keep it, then reap the financial rewards for "finding it" once the reward signs go up! Esp before the holidays...[:@]

Thanks for the advice, I will definitely call the police.  I don't think I could ID them, but perhaps my husband could.  I was in the backyard when he confronted them and only saw them from a distance running away, but he did talk to them.

Oh, I was just IRATE when I read this!  We have a school bus stop on our corner and when Pofi was a pup the kids would reach over the fence and he'd stand on a pallet of bricks we had for construction and they'd pet him.  He was really sweet and he knew them all, so we were lucky and there was no issue.

But twice I caught these two little girls opening the gate and trying to get him out of the yard. He's so good, he didn't go, but I had to tell them it was not safe for them or for him and that, yes, he knew them and he was friendly enough to pet over the fence, but in general they should never be doing that.

And then the summer went by and he forgot them and they tried it again that fall and he barked at them for opening the gate and they shrieked and he barked more and they told me "that's not the same Pofi we knew".

Now, no one comes near because of Mia, ska Barky McBarkus.  They are all terrified of her.

I'm SOOOOO glad you were able to stop those little hoodlums and find Sammy safe and sound.

Basenjimom, I know you are in AZ - is it Tempe/Phoenix area by chance?

I too would make the phone calls. Glad that they are safe where they belong - Home. I sure wish the kids would get caught and punished so they would never ever think of ever doing something like this again.I hate to think that a family couldn`t put their dogs out in their own fenced yard and have something like this happen.

Really so cruddy this happened, but glad you got them back and there's a fix (a lock). I mean that should solve the issue.  And keep the wild pigs out too!  I'm assuming you saw that story!

Was only curious about your locale because I travel to Tempe/Phoenix fairly often for business.  I was actually in Tempe when you posted about your recent foster getting placed and just got to wondering where you were other than not in Tuscon!
