    throwing up bile

i posted this under the health section, but thought since this is sunday night it might get more traffic here.

sydney has been throwing up bile all day. he threw up at least once during the night. and has thrown up several times today. he hasnt kept any food down all day, but he has been drinking normally.

here is a link to where his problems are described in better details....

right now i am concerned that he seems to need to poop, but cant or wont. unless things are better in the morning we are going to the vet first thing (he opens at 8 and takes clients first come first serve).

update: i just called the e-vet. she wouldnt really give me any advice over the phone. just said to bring him in.

That's pretty typical. I'd be concerned about a blockage, but don't know if it would be okay to wait until morning or not.

Sorry I don't have any knowledge or advice, but we're sending loads of get well vibes!!

probably best to go in, it's really hard to diagnose over the phone, she's probably worried about dehydration and would feel better taking a look :)

i made some rice and mixed it with some beef broth (didnt have any chicken). so far amelia is loving it, but sydney isnt interested. he ate a couple of bites. i tried to give him some yogurt. he normally will attack the spoon trying to get some, but not tonight.

looks like it is going to be a long night for me. not saying my wife doesnt care, because she does. but she thinks all this will just pass by morning. which it may, but i am still worried.

If Sydney is still drinking water and not throwing that up you might be OK until morning.  I would definatley take her in first thing though.  Something like this happened with my cat a few years ago, mind you cats digestive systems are much different, and it cost me a small fortune, but she needed to be put on an IV and force feed by me every few hours for about a week.  (She was aggressive with the vet so I had to do it).

If things aren't back to normal in the morning, I would take her in first thing tomorrow mornign but if she gets any worse over night take her to the e-vet.  That is just my opinion since it has been going on all day now.  Probably with the size she is I would think it would take more chocolate to be really toxic and would be more concerned about a blockage with the toy and the Christmas tree sheet being possible culprits.  It was a hairball blockage with my cat.  Keep us updated on her condition!  We are keeping you guys in our thoughts for sure!

Wish I were more helpful but just want to say I hope for the best and sympathize with your worry.

luckily sydney hasnt thrown up any more since this afternoon.

my biggest worry now is that he isnt eating and doesnt seem interested in eating. like i said i made the rice and he ate none. i even tried to hand feed him and he licked a few rice grains off my fingers. i tried to get him to eat some yogurt another of his favorites and he wouldnt. i even tried to spoon feed him some canned food that he normally goes crazy for and he ate maybe half a bite.

we are definitely going to the vet first thing. i just hope i didnt wait too long.

thanks for all the well wishes.

Bradley, I'm sorry that Sydney's not feeling well.  I hope it's not too serious.  Definitely keep us updated.

That sounds exactly like what Penny went through when she was having those weird episodes of sickness. If she vomited more than a couple of times, I'd take her in to get her some medication to settle her stomach, then give her some time and start feeding her tiny portions of rice and chicken every hour or so. Sometimes I'd hold off taking her in if she'd only brought up what was in her stomach and no bile, but I think bile is a pretty good sign that your dog is probably sick and miserable.

Penny's problems were related to eating kibble, as it turned out.

I'm not sure about blockages. Penny's had those before, too, and she never threw up. Could be, though.

    Good luck to you both.

we went to the vet first thing. the vet took some x-rays, and said that it didnt look like a blockage. i told him about the stuff sydney had ate and what we had been seeing in his poops. he said it may just be an irritation in his g.i. tract caused by eating this weird stuff. he gave sydney some barium and some pills.

sydney isnt supposed to eat anything until this evening. which wont be a problem as he has no appetite. the pills are for 3x's per day. i cant remember the name of the medicine though. i will look when i go home at lunch.

anyways, the vet said if sydney is still throwing up in the morning to bring him back. they can take another x-ray to see how far the barium has travelled. he said normally the barium will clear the digestive tract in about 24 hrs. so if it hasnt, there is a blockage of some type.

we are supposed to try and get sydney to eat about an hour after his evening pill. vet said to try the rice and broth again.

hopefully the little stinker will be going again. i did feel much better after the vet visit. i was worried and didnt sleep much last night.

I'm glad you went to the vet and they were able to treat it and reassure you.  The things we go through for our dogs!

I remember when Sammy ate two split chicken breasts, cooked, with bone - I was up most of that night as well.  Thankfully it didn't seem to phase him in the least.

Hopefully all goes well tonight and Sydney gets some TLC and yummy rice and broth for dinner and can keep it in his tummy this time!  Glad to hear that things are looking up for you! :)

At least Sydney has you to take care of him, Bradley.  Maybe he'll feel better this evening, and he'll eat the rice and broth.  Sending good vibes your way.

Guys like you are awesome, Bradley!
