    Newf advice needed!

Yesterday i spoke with a man who owns a 9 year old Newfoundland that his landlord says he has to get rid of.He said if he cant find him a place to go he "will have to get rid of him the old fashioned way" I am not sure if we will be taking him in but if it comes to that i have never had any experience with this breed. What can i expect? He says he loves children and even tollerated the young ones pulling at him.He has been an indoor dog before but recently has been living outside so he wont mess up the house! Do they generally get along with other dogs? Any advice would be helpful, thank you!

OMG!  I have absolutely NO advice for you but I ADORE Newfs.  God bless you, again, for taking in one of God's most precious creatures.  Btw, whatever happened to your last addition?  The one who was an older gal who ... well... sorta had the bladder situation?

i don't have any advice about newfoundlands, but if the guys rental agreement says he can have a dog on the premises the landlord cannot just suddenly decide it has to go.

I guess he has had some complaints of barking.Theman i spoke with said its not his dog that is barking but he is the one getting the blame.Since they kicked the dog outside it seems to me like they really dont care much about him anyway. That really disturbs me especially witha dog 9 years old.
As for my other old girl,Mia,she is still here.A couple of days ago she slipped out the door when we came home from the store, she can move fast for an old girl! DH had to chase her down a block away! She still has some spunk left in her!She is on meds that have really improved the bladder issue as well and she will now eat with gusto, anything you put in front of her.

My in laws had a nefwie for 13 years, Daisy. She was the biggest sweetheart ever! They are gentle giants, low key, cuddle bug, dogs. She was extremely gentle and dainty despite her size and always tried to be the center of attention. I dont think she knew she was a big dog, he he! Anotehr freind had one growing up and it was extremely well mannered and calm as well.

aww, yay for mia, im glad she is doing so well.

somehow i missed in your original post that the dog was living outdoors, in that case i agree, no dog should have to live outside, especially at 9 years old.

They said that being longhaired and with all the rain we have had recently,he got too wet and dirty for their new house.[:@]

Newf's are an extremely gentle, tolerant breed.  They tend not to be reactive at all - to other dogs, loud noises, crazy children.  They are also a relatively inactive breed and do not need tons of exercise (which may be surprising given their size).  Please do not let him take care of this situation "the old fashioned way".  I will get a Newf expert over here pronto to help with contacting a local Newf rescue.  You could NOT ask for a better dog!  (except for the hair and drool, but whatever)

I've heard that the only thing you really have to worry about with Newfs is that they are so driven to "rescue" people that sometimes they'll rescue a kid who isn't really in need of rescuing. [:)] There's definately worse things that could be said about a breed of dog!

I had a Newfie named Panda for 12 years, I sadly had to help her to the bridge this past fall and still miss her terribly. You will not find a more gentle, kind, sweet natured dog than a Newf. Yes, she shed, yes she drooled, yes she loved to try and swim in her water dish, but what a great dog she was. It's true about them trying to rescue people from the water, or at least she tried anyway. When she was a few years old, we would bring her to the lake at our camp to swim. She had only been to our camp's lake a few times, and generally would swim for a few minutes then relax with us on the beach. At one point, my 7 year old niece came with us to go swimming, and when she went out too far, off went Panda to the rescue! She leapt in and kept trying to "herd" and push my niece back to land! She did this everytime my niece went out any kind of distance, until the point we had to put her inside as she was just exhausting herself! Panda got along with any kind of animal there was, other dogs, cats, even my pet rats would be safe around her. She was absolutely in love with my black quarter horse mare, maybe she just thought it was just another huge Newfie! Very low key, she loved going for a walk in the morning and in the evening in her younger years, but was just as happy to lie about on the couch. She was never a big barker, but she would always make this "woo, woo, woo" noise when she was happy or waiting for a treat. Kids could do anything they wanted to her, and she would take it all in stride, just be careful, as they try to lick anyone they can get to to death! I couldn't think of a bad thing to say about a Newf except for the fact that being such a large breed, they don't live nearly long enough. Plus, I had unfortunately purchased her from a BYB (didn't know any better at the time) and she had major problems with her hips in her later years. I miss her so much, and just writing about her brings tears streaming down my cheeks. Please help this sweet ol' guy if you can, you truly are an angel for caring for these dogs.

Newfs are great dogs, and they slobber, shed, and do all the other icky stuff that dogs can do.  They are one of the best breeds for kids.  They are smart, but sometimes you have to wait a few after giving them a command.  LOL, it takes some time for the signal to get all the way from the brain to the rear end. [;)]

Hi, I currently have 3 Newf's and have owned the breed for many many years.[:D]

First, could you ask the gentleman who the breeder is? Newf breeders are generally very good about taking back their own...my friend does Newf rescue and she recently placed an older Newf with HD to a loving home.  I can find out the name of the local Newf rescue in your area as well..  Many of my friends are Newf breeders and show all over North America.

Depending on if the gentleman has a purebred Newf or not will greatly tell of the dogs care and upkeep.  The show Newf's are being bred for a ton of coat and you really have to keep up on it.  I don't know how much coat this dog carries but, it can be a lot of work.  It takes us about 3 hours from start to finish to groom one of our Newf's...and my Sister is a professional groomer, owns her own shop and has been grooming Newf's for show for many year.  Most of her ;pet Newf owners find the coat care over whelming...and if this dog has been outside for this long he is probably a mess.

Newf's are prone to HD and heart problems...so, if you take this Newf on be on the look out.

Newf's are wonderful dogs, they are very loving and really do well in a loving home.  They get along well with other dogs and none of ours ever had any issues with other dogs.  Even non socialized Newf's do extremely well in most situations.  Of course like any breed poor breeding can turn out extremely fearful Newf's and some that are backwards. That happens with any breed.

Our Newf's and most of our last Newf's could not swim...and our current group does not have any of the drive to rescue or go for the splash.  It seems this is mainly with the Show Newf's...the working Newf's still have the drive to swim and go for the splash.  So, you can hit and miss in that department.[:D] I've seen more Newf's that can't swim than those that can swim....these are all show dogs tho.

When they do have the drive and proper motor patterns it'is hard to keep them out of the water...we had one Newf with natural drives...he was typical and was hard to get out of the water.  My Sister had fun with him doing carting and water rescue seminars.

Newf's do drool, but, then again that depends on the individual Newf.  There are many Newf's that have dry mouths and don't drool at all....and the old style Newf's didn't drool either.  It's mainly the last decade of show Newf's that have been bred for the big lips and faces.

Over all Newf's are wonderful, but, as mentioned they do shed a lot.  When they get dirty they get "really" dirty.  They can range in personalities, coat types, facial shapes, drooling/non drooling  that will be very obvious when you see this Newf you are thinking of rescuing.

I hope you take the poor fella, or contact me by PM and I will put you in touch with some Newf rescue groups...or at least try to find out who the breeder is.

This is just to show you how dirty a Newf can get[:D] This is our Newf Dilon after a fun time playing in the mud.

I wasnt able to get out to him today since we had a big storm last night and a travel advisory was out today.I will try again tomorrow morning. His email said he was a purebread newfinlind retriever! Yes spelled that way,so this is not a rocket scientist we are dealing with.He got the dog from "some guy" Hopefully i can reach him tomorrow, they sound like wonderful dogs. Some people think our puppy Eddie has some newf in him.His temperment sure seems to match!

    purebread newfinlind retriever

Well, he doesn't sound like a purebred.   I picture he looks like a flat coated retriever since so many Newf mixes end up looking like that breed[:D]  He probably won't be as big a job keeping groomed..."maybe".

We have many clients that come in for grooming who say they have purebred Newf's and they turn out to be border collie mixes or just a black dog...lol  In the province of Newfoundland where the breed got it's name any big black dog is considered a Newfoundland dog.  Early pictures of the breed didn't look anything like what we have today.

Good luck to you, hopefully every thing works out for the best.  It looks like you have quite a crew of dogs currently.  If you still need the info for Newf rescue I will pass it on.  I'd love to see a picture of him when you get out to see him.[;)]
