Some people just don't know........ and new pics!

He doesn't look like a pit bull to me at all.  My friend has a Beagle/Boxer mix and everyone is afraid of her dog because they think she is a pit bull too.  Her dog is the sweetest, most gentle dog I've ever been around.  Here is a picture of her.  Her name is Shannon.

Though not an expert, I don't see any Pit in him. As others have said, many people assume that brindle coat means Pit, just as many people assume coloration on the tongue means Chow. Around here, any big dog with dark coloring means Lab.

It sounds like the youngsters you spoke of are acting like wannabe gangstas.

I think he looks very houndy in the pic where he's kissing you. Other times, he looks boxerish. I'm sticking with boxer/hound.

I know what you mean about everything's a pit. My dog *might* have some pit in him, but it's not dominant, and I've had people tell me he's 100% pit! It's also anything with the slightest hint of a boxy head...

i have seen tons of brindle boxers, but never a brindle pitbull [&:]

I don't know that I've seen purebread pitties that are brindle, but I have seen mixes around here and in shelters.  I'd say at least 20% of the pit mixes I see in the area (being that we inadvertently moved into a low-income complex, they are very prevalent even with being banned) are brindle of some sort.

Sammy is a very handsome boy and sure looks like a boxer/hound to me!

I do NOT see pit bull at all, really.<---not that I'm an expert, by any means though.
I DO, however, see hound and boxer. Boxers are often brindled and he's got the white sox that boxers have. That muzzle/jowl area SCREAMS boxer to me. The ears are very houndish.

    He's a DOLL.

Now forgive me for being a little paranoid here, but if I ran into a group of wanna-be thugs on the street like that, I think I would probably take the coward's way out & let them believe just whatever they liked about my dog! If they thought he was a pit, for that brief moment, I'd be swearing up & down that he was indeed, & the meanest one I'd ever met for that matter! [8D]

speaking of pit bulls (I own a mix), I was walking Ella once and a guy in truck that was in a parking lot we were walking through, as we were walking by he says, "Hey, how old is she?" and I said, "She's 3 and she's spayed!" and I walked off. I mean, the nerve! He didn't ask me what KIND of dog she was, or what her name is, or if she's friendly, or if he could pet her, or ANYTHING NORMAL. He asked me her AGE.
I might have thought this just a little odd, if the shelter I had adopted her from hadn't warned me of questions like that. I was waiting for him to ask me if I had any babies for sale or if I was selling her!
Call ME paranoid, but that question bothered me.
I should add that we're not sure if Ella has had babies before or if she was simply allowed to go through heat a few times before she got spayed, but you can TELL she's a female just by looking at her from the side.

    but never a brindle pitbull

These are OLD pictures of Thor, but he is 100% pit. He's a silvery brindle. I really need some new pics of him, lol

I have seen a brindle Am Staff. She is on her way to becoming a weight pulling champion.

Yeah, but it was like 5 or 6 pm and there was a number of other people around, so I wasn't truly scared or anything.  I had my cell phone on me and there are tons of apartments nearby.  Sammy is actually rather protective of me, but only with certain people - he knows when they are no good and have bad intentions!!!  We were visiting my parents who live near a major football stadium and there were people camping out the night before so when we walked the dogs we were within a few hundred feet of all the crazy football people and Sammy barked and growled at a group of drunk guys like I have never heard him before!  And he sounds soooo vicious - he has a very deep bark, though we rarely hear it.

Chewbecca - do you think his muzzle looks boxer?  I always though they were a bit shorter and wider, and that it looked a bit more beagle/houndish.
    • Gold Top Dog
the length of it looks houndish, but I suppose it's how he is marked on the muzzle that makes me think boxer and how the jowls hang.

Just wanted to add that there's a type of coonhound with brindle coloring:[linkhttp://www.akc.org/breeds/plott/index.cfm] the plott hound.[/link] If you google for plott hound pictures you'll actually find several that resemble Sammy.

They aren't all that common, but it might be a good one to pull out if you feel that people are agitating to get you and your "pit bull" kicked out of somewhere.

    Cressida,

These Plott hounds are adorable!  and you're right they do look like Sammy sometimes, especially since they come in brindle.  Good to keep in mind.  He also looks a lot like an English Foxhound with boxer coloring as well, so I can toss that out there as well.
