Some people just don't know........ and new pics!

Took Sammy for a walk right before dinner was done - it was duskish out, perhaps a bit closer towards dark out.  We take a "lap" around the block of our apartment complex for shorter walks, and we were about 1/3 of the way around.  We approach a group of boys, who are all teens and typical of this area since there's a lot of section 8 housing here - swearing all the time, pants down to their knees showing boxers, being loud and obnoxious, etc.  They are walking in the same direction as us, but very slowly, so Sammy and I go about 5' to the left of them to pass, Sammy on a short leash.  I tend to talk to Sammy as we walk, and his tags jangle, so anyone who can't hear us coming is just deaf.

As we approach, we're under a street light.  One kid looks behind him at us and says "Oh, look at the pit bull, man he scared me!"  To which I tell him Sammy isn't a pit bull.  Then he asks what he is and I tell him boxer & beagle (which is our best guess but who knows).  So he says, "Oh, well when he gets older man he will be a big dog!"  Of course I say, "He's almost 2 - he's full grown"  By now we're already past them and they're nearly talking to my back.  They keep up with the pit bull talk and things about fighting and being mean, but we out pace them at this point and are nearly half a block ahead.

I guess what irks me the most is that everyone thinks he is a pit bull - nothing against pitties at all, but we aren't allowed to have them here at the apt complex so I don't want to be known to have one when I don't since obviously people here don't know their breeds from a hole in the ground.

So - honestly, from Sammy's coloring, would you think he's a pit bull?  He totally doesn't have the build or face or anything of one, but his coloring might lead people that way, I guess?
Here are some newer pics, btw.  Black dog is my parents - Chelsea - something of a black lab with.... something?  And that's me that Sammy is sticking his tongue into my mouth... lol.

Thanks for the updated photos! Sammy is a cutie. I suppose he could be part pit bull, mixing breeds can be unpredictable... but I think your guess of boxer/hound seems most likely judging by his pics... and hey they can't DNA test for breed so that can be your story and you can stick to it. Yeah, I've entertained the thought of him being a touch pittie......  but mostly I doubt he has much from that other than maybe color.  Boxer is definite since he really does "box" - and hits me in the nose all the time doing it!  He plays like that alllll the time.  and he howls so there's definitely beagle or some hound there, and he runs way fast so that helps the hound part.

Oh well.  Just irks me sometimes with the stupid teenagers here always assuming every dog is a pit bull and they're mean.

Sammy'd love to come give you kisses for calling him a cutie!  He has those hound eyes that just make you give in..... ok, belly rub time!

He probobly has *some* pit in him (Sally is a pit mix and is not only the same color but has very much the same body type just a touch more muscling) but I wouldn't even guess half.  Certain breeds like pit bulls and labs tend to have genes for traits that are more dominant and therefore show up more readily in a half/half mix.  If he were half pit I would expect a more bully head and ears.  One parent could have been half pit maybe, and the other a hound.  If he were mine I'd tell people he was a hound mix.

That's what his "official" county dog license says... hound mix.  mostly he identifies with hound traits anyway so it makes sense.  other than that, I can ID with some boxer as well, as I mentioned the "boxing" motions and also the SA he had seems to go with hound and boxer rather than pit bull.

But you're right that pit bull traits tend to be dominant, which is why I think so many dogs in the shelters get labelled as such, since there's no denying that they are part pittie.

Every time I see pictures of Sally I see how much they look alike in the brindle color.....  I'm defintely a sucker for brindle now!  Do you have any more recent pictures of her?  Maybe I missed you posting some recently....... :)

I really don't see pit. I see lots of boxer and some kind of hound. He sure is a cutie!

    Awww, thanks!

Here's a video of him playing with my parents' dog Chelsea.  Unfortunately, it was taped with our digital camera that had no light so its pretty dark, but sometimes you can see Sammy better.  Just follow the white part of his head :)

ETA - thats not Sammy barking at any point in the video.... it's all my parent's demon dog!

wow, what a gorgeous boy!  have you considered brittany/boxer mix? that ear set and white muzzle just screamed brittany at me. my dog is 75% brittany and he has a smooth coat and big flappin ears too [;)]

here's a brittany for quick reference

i just realized your dog flattens his ears back just like mine too

A lot of people think ANY dog with brindle coloring is all or part Pit.  I don't see it here, but I could see some Boxer.  Brindle Boxers are relatively common in my neck of the woods.

As for him being mean, I suspect that the only mean parts of him are his tongue and tail! LOL rremember, boys this age think everything mean is cool, so they were (in a back handed way) saying they admire your dog. Just let them see what a sweet boy he is and hopefully, some of what you are trying to say will rub off on them and actually stick in those pea-sized brains![:D]

i don't see pit either. He looks like some sort of brindle boxer mix like you say. people think EVERYTHING is a pitbull nowadays. I have an irish setter german shepherd mix (not the one on my signature) and he looks absolutely nothing like a pitbull and I still had a guy say "oh look you got a pitbull in your car"

Every damned thing is a pit these days!  He looks very houndy to me.

I'm not familiar with brittany's - but thanks for the idea!  He *has* to have something hound ish in him for that darn howl of his.  He also looks like an english foxhound and a german shorthair pointer depending on the pictures I've seen, but I figure he's a mix of more common breeds if only for simplicity.

Unfortunately..... I guess we'll never know what he is for sure, just as I'll never know what happened to him before he came to us to make him such a shy, easily frightened dog.

My parent's dog, the black lab mix in the pictures.video, though, got the wrong mix of the gene pool.  Whatever she is, she is a hyper, crazy, wacko dog.  She's 8 years old and all she does is make NOISE - bark, whine, "talk."  And she never grew out of that lab pup pulling on leash and generally being hyper like everyone always promised my mom she would.  So whatever Sammy is, I'd rather have him *just* the way he is than have it go the other way and have my parent's dog! [:D]  (and yeah they've tried training her till they're blue in the face and it did very little.  maybe a ;pro trainer could help but after 8 years they gave up)

yeah, you said it.  you'd think every brindle and white dogs *must* be pit
