awww, poor old girl. i cant even tell you how awesome you are for taking her in and making her comfortable. i hope you find her owner, i can just see in her face that she is feeling very lost right now.

She's such a sweet old doggie! Old age incontinence can happen from lack of estrogen, and at her age the risk of cancer is negligible since she probably wouldn't be around long enough to develop it if she got replacement estrogen. Another drug that works very well is phenylpropanolamine--it's a decongestant that was taken off the market for humans, but I think you can still get it for dogs.

I just want to give her rubs and pets, poor old dear! She looks like an Alaskan doggie.

You can still get PPA from a vet for incontinent dogs.  It's marketed under the trade name Proin.  But, with an old girl like her, best to do a urine - get her BUN and creatinine.  That way, you'll know if you are dealing with kidney issues, which are fairly common.  She may have some life in her yet - if you need help on keeping a kidney dog alive, Callie & I may have some more info for you.  She looks like a doggy angel, and I'm glad she found you!

    Is she chipped?

The incontinence may be spay incontinence but you must rule out UTI and check kidney function first. If it is spay incontinence it's a relatively easy fix with either DES or PPA. The cynic in me wonders whether her people dumped her.

Oh poor girl.  How did everyone fare through the night?
    • Gold Top Dog
I would get her a good thorough vet check including a blood panel and let her live her life out surrounded by love.
Giving hospice care to an elderly dog like this can be so rewarding....don't worry about where she came from just accept her and let her live her remaining days with love and dignity.
She looks like a love who needs some simple medical care and tons of love.

Well we made it through the first night! She hasnt eaten anything yet today but she went outside for a bit and hung around with me for a while.
She isnt chipped, doesnt surprise me,it really hasnt caught on in my area.
we live in one of thoes one stoplight tiny villages. We dont have boarding kennels and such out here so i dont think thats what happened. The only reason i dont think she was dumped is that she did have her tag on.People usually remove thoes so they cant trace them.
I will have her checked for a UTI but since it only happens when she falls asleep in leaning more towards the incontinence.
She seems very uncomfortable in the house.I think she may have been an outside dog.She hasnt been brushed or bathed in a very long time and she has fleas too.We will just take it one day at a time and make her as comfortable as possible.
Would it hurt to start her on a kidney diet anyway? The vet cant get her in for a while so maybe i should start now?Any ideas for that would be great. For now i just want her to keep eating anything to keep her strength up.Bear with me folks! I have 4 other senior dogs but this is my first one that is this old and has special needs.Guess it will be a good lesson the get ready for the other old folks.Might as well just put up the sign.

I think given her age and her issues the best diet for her is the whatever-she'll-eat diet.

Awww...she's lucky she found you.  Give her some lovin' from me - she makes me think of my Shari.
    • Gold Top Dog
Tina, I was thinking of your Shari, too, when I saw her photos.

She looks so forlorn - I'm so glad she found her way to you, Christi.  Perhaps she does belong to someone who will be thrilled to find her, but if not, it makes me feel good to know that you're providing her with such care.  Her time left on earth may be very short, but she could rally quite well now that she's in your hands.  Bless you for helping her, and I'll be eager to hear more updates.  Her sad face will stay in my mind today. I'd wonder the same thing.  A dog that old and in that condition isn't likely to just wander too far from home on her own.  Some a** probably just decided it was too much trouble to deal with an old, incontinent dog. [:@]

What a lucky, dear dog. It is so sad, but you can make the end so much better than roaming around. SO sad. I am so glad you are helping her. Mia is very lucky. Bless you.

people don't always remove any tags when dumping a pet. My niece rehomed a young beagle through petfinder, who unfortunately ended up in 3 more homes although my niece strongly told the original adopters to please contact her if they couldn't keep Lacey.
Lacey was eventually found, dumped, on a college campus. My niece was traced as the original rabies tag was still on Lacey's collar!!!! And by calling every person who had Lacey in those few months we found out what happened.
