A dog is not a person

Think of it this way:  Hurricane JOSE hits and youre stuck in your attic with your kids and your dog. Which do you kill to feed the others? Of course its a stupid question because a dog is not a person.

Not a stupid question at all.  Which of my kids?

It really sounds like you came here with some baggage already pre-packed, pal. If you have an actual question or problem, I've found the people who post here to be a wealth of knowledge, and many will offer quite differing opinions for you to consider. But yes, sometimes dog-owners also like to coo over our dogs. The two things aren't mutually exclusive. I wouldn't trust someone to give me medical or training advice about dogs who did not love their own dogs intensely.

It is possible to love something that isn't human without anthropomorphizing it. In my experience, the anthropomorphization of dogs leads to a lot of really horrendous abuse and mistreatment, when people go ascribing human motivations to their dogs' behaviors instead of seeing things from the dog's perspective. Hence the various threads here about what a dog's perspective might actually be.

I wanted a site where I could get a rational answer to a real physical problem and I dont think thats possible from a person fretting over Fifi not liking the color of the new throw on my bed.

    I need real solutions:
a: this is not a problem
b: it might be a problem so try this...
c: this needs to be looked at by a vet
d: put the poor dog out of her misery

Your post about your dog's tooth falling out, which I responded to with what seemed like a "rational answer", has led to this thread?????  Are you okay?

By the way, not all of us actually take the time to brush our dog's teeth everyday.  We should, but many don't.  Assuming you were being honest,  I'd say that puts you in the category of a loving, concerned dog owner.  Hope that doesn't offend you [:)]

You know, speaking of anthropormorphizing (sp); what do you call the reverse? The reason I ask is that your behavior rather reminds me of a nervous belligerent dog approaching an established pack. Instead of taking the bottom rung and making the proper entreaty to be included you came all snapping and posturing in hopes of making an alpha impression.  Came off a bit like a pup too big for his paws and got bit in the ass. Don't worry, just a bit of discipline. Doesn't mean we won't like you.  Just try another tact.  So throw some calming signals, glance at us obliquely while making a wide circle and try again.

Although I agree with the troll sentiment... I still can't get past this post.

I find it utterly amusing that some people this day and age think they need to make an outright attack to make any kind of point. In fact, if you make an attack on a person or group, they will respond back in an equally unpleasant manner... we all know "every action has an equal and opposite reaction" rather well.

That aside, I don't under stand why you feel the need to attack. Why not just get the information you need and leave... that seems the adult answer to your predicament... at least to me. BTW, we get our knowledge from being so-called "fanatics" because it gives us the drive to search for more and more answers. If I didn't love something, I would not look for answers to it's problems unless absolutely necessary.

I am proud to say I LOVE MY DOG!

    Paula, LOL!!!

Um, jartzh? Are you dissatisfied with being told to go to the vet and ask about the lost tooth? It seems like you got perfectly straightforward answers to your question. No touchy-feely stuff, no making the dog be human, etc. Heck, no one even asked which flavor toothpaste you are using? [;)]

So why the big grump on this thread? I think you were treated very matter-of-factly when you asked your question.

    I mean, hunh? What gives?

I have a dog, rabbits, & parrot. The rabbits run in the backyard with the dog.  I like them but dont love them.  I like my classic car but I dont love it.  If my car dies I will shoot it and buy me another possession.  Same thing with my pets.

Think of it this way:  Hurricane JOSE hits and youre stuck in your attic with your kids and your dog. Which do you kill to feed the others? Of course its a stupid question because a dog is not a person.

Wow is there a heart in your thoracic cavity?

When we had the threat of a hurricane in Houston last year, Romeo was the first one to go in the car and I made sure I had all of his things packed first...I know he is not a human, but he is my family, friend, companion.

Romeo is a dog, but he is better than most humans I know.

Jartzh, Next time you have a question about your dog call the vet....Your attacks show your immaturity and lack of respect for others.  All you can do is make generalizations yet you have never been on here before today....your closed mindness is amazing.  Take your asinine statements and go if you cannot conduct yourself in an adult manner.  Obviously you need to grow up....and maybe you never will.  I guess you were never taught how to treat others how you would want to be treated.

Since I have no children, the depth of my love for my dogs is as deep as it can possibly be. As much as my mother loves me, I love my dog the same amount. Ash IS my child. I know she's not human, but there is nothing I wouldn't do for her. I have left work early because I got a call that Ash was vomiting. I've called in sick when she's not well. I've left work in tears because I got the news that my older dog passed away. I bawled the whole way home and the pain was no less than one of my best friends had died. I live on a VERY tight budget and almost all of my "left over" money goes to Ash. I shop for Ash with as much excitement and enthusiasm as I would a kid. I was engaged to man who had a daughter that I loved very much and I knew I loved her like my own when I realized I loved her as much as my dogs.

And still, nothing I do for my dogs will ever compare to what they bring to my life and the life lessons I have learned from them. I am a better person because of my dogs, without a doubt. I strive to live my life as closely as possible to how my dogs live theirs. If it weren't for my dogs, I'd probably weigh twice what I weigh now. They get me out because I know that it's not an option to not exercise them. I get more enjoyment out of playing fetch with my dogs than I do going out to some club with my friends. I have never laughed more then when I am with my dogs. I've never been outwitted by a person the way I am by my dogs. I've never been more humbled than I am when my smart ass dogs get the best of me. And no person has ever been able to stir the amount of sheer fear, panic and anxiety than my dogs have when they are sick or have gotten out.

The thought of losing my dogs causes a pain in my heart that aches like no other. I know that day will come eventually, but until then, I will continue to treat my dogs like the angels that they are. If I had children, I would do the same thing. I don't consider it humanizing them because I am aware they are canines and not humans, but it doesn't mean I can't love them like I would a person. It doesn't mean I can't care for them the way I would a child. The education I have received from my dogs is priceless and will make me a better parent when or should that day ever come.

    Dogs arn't humans? Really?
Oh yeah, your are right... we don't fix humans unless they want it. Though maybe we should... That would fix the problem of abortion for the most part and... never mind XD lets not go there.

    Dogs are color blind. [8|]

I am not even going to grace anything else with a response. You are clearly a person who has a problem.
    Hope you get help soon.
