A dog is not a person

A dog is not a person

Does everyone on this list realize that dogs are not people?  Wouldnt everyone be happier with their pet if they didnt humanize it?  It makes me sick when I see a person that wont put their sick old dog down because it would be too upsetting.  So they let it just lay around and suffer and slowly die. If they considered it a pet that they are responsibile for then maybe they would think of it instead of their own selfishness.

I think that folks deal with it the way that they know how to deal with it.  Taking care of a sick pet is a lot of work.  If they want to continue taking care of the animal, it is up to them.  I would just be angry if they just left it, and did not care for the creature.  There is a point in time when most folks will accept that the animal is not going to rebound and when it gets time, they know it.

To say that the animal is not a person is obvious.  I think most people have a strong affinity to their dog (s).  It is hard to let go of something you love so much.  And I think more than condemnation, they need support to do what is best for the pet and their own family.

I think we should put him down, but my Grandmother wants to hang on to him for a few more years. [&:] Too bad, could save us a lot of heartache and headache.

I knew there was something different about us. [;)]

I love my dogs very much. They come before most people in my life. I take better care of them than I do myself. If Ash got hit by a car, I would not hesitate to pay all the money it would take to make her better. If Ash were sick with something that could be cured by medicine, I would do that as well. Now if Ash were sick with something that was causing her pain and suffering, something that was taking away from the quality of her life, I would not let her suffer like that. If I could no longer make her comfortable and she just wasn't living a happy doggy life because of some disease, then I would ease her pain by humanely euthanizing her. I would not continue to let my pet suffer because of my fear of losing her.

WELL SAID!  I believe that most of the people on this thread are of a similar kiln.  We ADORE our animals and YES, we are very aware that they are not people, but I believe that they are truly the better part of people.  Altho I have had 3 of the human variety, to me in many ways, they ARE my kids.  They just walk on all fours, have a permanent fur coat, and have a speech impediment that we are working on!  Don't mean to offend but they are definitely the better part of some people I know and I'll take them over people at times for sure!

Putting down a sick dog is always a difficult decsion.  I think there is always that hope that the dog may come out of it and jump back it's it's old self.  Some will spend what ever it takes to keep that dog alive no matter how the dog feels.  Then there are the older belives that if it's sick it's no longer any use to us so shoot it and get it over with.  Thats what my great grandparents belived when it came to thier working hearding dogs, no need to keep a sick dog around...  There has to be a happy medium between the two and it's so difficult to decide when it come to that point.

Now for saying dogs are not humans, well your right and thats why we go out on the limb here to figure out why our dogs do the strange things they do.  If they could only tell us...

It maybe a selfish to keep the animal alive & allow the suffering to continue.  However, perhaps that person does consider that pet to be their child, most of us here do to some extent, and simply cannot put their pet down.  It is a very difficult time!  If your child was in a hospital bed dying, would you poison him/her? OR would you spend every last minute you had with him/her?
As for not humanizing pets, I think you've stepped on some toes.  While most of us do realize they're not human, they are very much a part of our families and our lives.  I believe most everyone on this forum, myself included, prefers the company of their pets to the company of some (maybe most) humans.

In all fairness people need less judgement and more understanding. Having had the experience of euthanizing an animal I completely understand people's reluctance to do it. No matter how frustrated we might be by their hesisitation we must accept that it is not an easy thing, even with an animal at death's door. It is heartwrenching and surreal. So back off and let people be human and come to terms with the things they must do even if it is not on your schedule.

You know, to most of us, our pets are members of the family. I know to us, our dog Sadie is like our child. When we lost our beagle Sheba last year, it hurt. The pain was right up there with when my mother and my brother died. I don't consider that humanizing our pets. I call that being human. In my opinion, all a dog wants is to be loved and cared for. They love unconditionally, which is more than can be said for most humans.

A 'kiln' is an extremely hot oven that you bake pottery in. Somehow, I don't think that's the word you want!

Although at times, my life does feel like a kiln!

Just because you love and care for your pet the way you would a human child does not mean you are humanizing it.  Is there something wrong with wanting to provide the best food, the best care, the best toys, the best life for your companion and best friend?  Why is treating them with the respect they deserve humanizing?  Its not.

And to refer to the threads about dog psyche, an intelligent discussion about the mind of a fellow animal is actually very stimulating and interesting.  I can understand though, how that may be too advanced for some.[8|]
