STRONG toys

the only toys that have lasted longer than oh, ten minutes in my household are the Orbee line of toys and the Jollyballs.
One good way to help toys last longer is to keep them put away and only bring them out when you want to play with the dog. Toys and chewies are not the same thing. If you want a long-lasting safe chewy get a big raw knuckle bone. Takes the Destructo Dane around three days to eat a big knuckle bone.

Well, I bought him a kong ball about a week ago & it took some time for him to get used to it, but he's been playing with it (not as much as his squeek balls). [8|]
I'm anxiously waiting for the velcro toy, I ended up ordering it last week.  I really hope that it will last for a little while at least.
I'm planning on ordering the firehose toy, but the website has the medium ones on backorder, so I think I'll wait until they get some more in stock (I know there's other sites, but I really like the one that the money goes to pets in need!) [:)]

HKdog:  I'm sorry to say, but I had to laugh at the thought of getting hit in the head by a frozen rag!!  I'll take those words of advice carefully as I can only imagine Copper doing that to me!!!  [&:]

Melindar: My wife thought it was funny to! I just rolled on the floor saying some very choice words....I think I even made a few up. My fault though, I shouldn't have been playing tug with the other end of the rag in my mouth...

Toys and chewies are not the same thing.

Oh, Copper knows the difference.  He actually doesn't chew on his toys, he just destoys them (I swear he thinks that's his mission in life). [:D]  He's got an cleaned off raw marrow bone, pig's ears, a nylabone & a kong ball that he chews/knaws on.

My husband does the same thing (except with a rope toy)!  I'm just waiting for the same thing to happen to him!!  LOL

Have you ever tried a KONG? They are super tough. I'm certain he could not chew through one of them.

They aren't THAT tough. My 17 lb super shredder ripped her red Kong right in half. Now, she only gets oversized, black Kongs. She starts to pick the rubber apart, after a while, and I have to go buy a new one, for her.

The toys we've found  that work best are Planet Dog toys. Their stuffed toys are pretty tough (but all stuffed toys are pretty much shredder material), and their rubbery toys are FANTASTIC! They aren't hard rubber, like Kong toys. They're soft, squishy, mint scented rubber and they last MONTHS. Emma absolutely loves them.

I've not read the other responses but I'll be listening
Mine loves kongs but has actually torn them up, so once empty need to be put away, has 1 ultra kong that I can leave out cause its new
just this morning he chewed a large 3 knot rope toy in half in less than 10 minutes
stuffed animals = less than one minute ( I kid not)
He destroyed an air kong jack in less than 5 minutes ( ate the ends off)
chewed open a firehose toy in 5 minutes
skins tennis balls then chews them to pieces
chewed one of those tires to bits
    etc etc
Even broke those smoked bones in half to get at the marrow and then broke the halves in half
Tried one of those treat balls that is pretty big and made of hard plastic and he tried to eat tha ball - he knew he roll it for the treats but got bored with that and started to chew on the plastic
My poor buddy has no toys [sm=cry.gif]

He is uninterested in his nylabone galileo

He has chewed and eaten blankets and towels that I use in his crate, and 3 beds

despite the negative press he gets pressed rawhide bones and chews and eats them completely - they are the only thing that lasts at all

I now roll up old kitchen towels and knot the ends.  Tug with him some and let him destroy them, at least its cheap

All his chewing is supervised because he eats all the bits

Amazingly he hasn't destroyed anything in the house

btw he is @12.5-13 months and a lab/great dane mix

he destroyed the first stuffed toy we got him in 2 days (age 3.5 months) and from then on it was minutes for them

yet let him outside he hunts everything but only tries to play with his catch - give him a kitchen towel and its shredded and killed - who knows???

I am reallly lucky in the fact that he has never chewed up anything that wasn't a toy (except for a piece of paper that was left on the floor that he ended up shredding.....who needs a paper shredder when you have a dog?!) [:D]

    Marley has one of these:
    http://info.product-finder.net/tss/Firehose-Dog-Toys.html
It has lasted almost a year now!
    Worth a try!

    Thanks for the link!
Ella is a chewer, but because she's part pit the shelter adviced against ANY tug toys.
Her toys HAVE TO squeak or she won't play with them.
I'm going to order one of those soon!

As far as balls go, I have had great luck with a black Kong and also a Lacrosse ball (yes, made for playing lacrosse - it is very, very tough).  My GSD can tear almost anything apart except for these two.

just a warning that we have been through 2 of those - the first one was not the one in the link the second was.
In the case of the one in the link my buddy got the black trim off the bottom and a hole in the main red bit in 5 unattended minutes
I try to have fetch and tug toys separate so he doesn't chew them but I didn't realize that my hubby had let him bring this inside.
If you can keep him from chewing it - it is tough - but it certainly failed the chew test of my resident monster  [sm=lol.gif]

Ella had her bad cuz ball for 2 weeks before she chewed the squeaker out.
She's working on another now. I went to JB wholesale site and I'm thinking about getting some toy called ruffians.
They look cute, durable, AND they squeak.

Any toy not made of rubber lasts about 5 minutes in my house. We tried those firehose ones too and that lasted maybe 10 minutes and left some really irritating little bits all over the floor. Forutnately, my boys aren't really into eating non-food obejcts, but they live to disembowel. Plush toys are forbidden in the house, as mommy got real tired real fast of vaccuuming up little bits of soggy stuffing.

We have two black King Kongs, 2 Petstages Orka Jacks (OMG I love those!), and 2 hard nylabones. The nylabones are usually a passing fancy. They'll chew them for a few minutes then get bored and give up. But for any of the kongs or jacks to get played with, they have to be stuffed with something. They get their breakfasts in them every morning (we stuff them at night with kibble and peanut butter, then freeze them). When I let them out of their crates in the evening, I have to shut their crate doors immediately or they obsess over stealing the other's kong and jack because there's almost always leftovers in them. Each dog has their own specialty, so after dinner I open their crates up again and they work on their breakfast leftovers. Conrad's the Jack Specialist with his patented Chew-and-Suck Technology, and Marlowe's a complete whiz with the Kongs with his Extra-Long Tongue of Doom.

Our dog is a lab/terrier mix - probably part pittie - and when she gets the molars working, there's nothing she can't chew through.  I have found some success with the fleece toys that aren't stuffed.  They are flat, and they usually have a squeaker.  I let her play with them until she gets a hole in it, and then I remove the squeaker.  She'll play with them for a while, even if they have a hole in them.  Then for some reason, she goes on a tear, and she'll rip it to shreds.  I also shop the clearance racks at the pet stores - I refuse to buy anything full price anymore.

She also loves the Wubba Wubba.  It's the toy with two balls, wrapped in fabric, with the tails.  She shakes it, throws it, and it's good for tugging.  She'll chew off a tail here and there, and she'll still play with those.  I got lucky about a year ago, when I went to Ocean State Job Lot (discount store), they had wubbas for $2.49.  I bought one, and when we determined that she liked it a lot, I went and cleaned them out.  She'll play with it for a while, then she'll start to chew off the fabric.  She doesn't rest until she gets the balls loose, and then she'll work on the tennis ball.  It's a cheap one, so she can get it ripped apart sooner than later.  Then, she'll play with the plastic squeaky ball.  For a toy that I bought for under $3, they have been a godsend.

My problem now - my supply is dwindling.  I can't find a Wubba on-line for less than $10.  Uggh!
