Dogs watching TV?

    Dogs watching TV?

Does anyone have a dog that likes to actually watch the television? Do your dogs respond to certian sounds, or actually watch what's happening?

I find that kind of interesting, because my dogs aren't really interested in it at all. They will glance at the TV, but for the most part just ignore it. One of my friend' dog would be sleeping soundly, and when a guy whistled on the TV ( in Pirates of the Carribean, when they whistled for the jail dog, if anyone cares [;)]) she woke up and looked around, and did that both times. I thought that was kinda funny[:)] But I have heard of some dogs actually watching TV, and wondered about this. Anyone know whey a dog would do this?

We made a video of dog class, and once in a while I put it on the TV and she comes flying in at the sound of all her "doggie friends." It never fails to capture her attention, which I find rather amusing.

My old dog, Tiffany, used to love TV - I'd leave it off, and come home to find her on the bed with the TV on and the remote lying next to her paw. I know it must have been an accident, but it was sort of eerie the way she'd always seem to be watching TV on the bed when I got home, when I knew I'd left the TV turned off...

My previous dog, Reese and my older dog Lille never had a real interest in T.V. only occasionally when they would hear a dog barking or smiliar noise.  They never looked at the T.V. they assumed it was coming from outside.

Dasher on the other hand watches T.V. all the time, he does know the difference between animals on T.V. and other fast moving objects such as cars, etc. as he shows no interest in the cars, just the critters. I posted this a while back, but here is Dasher watching Animal Planet: (I think he missed his true calling, to be a lion taking down water buffalo [;)])

Only Cord listens to sounds or watches things on tv. I watched a Nova show late one night that showed a British shepherd working his sheep and the whistles were similiar to the ones he's trained on (but for different things). The "lie down" whistle was the same though and he'd fly around, trying to get behind the sheep on the tv and then hit the deck when the shepherd blew the lie down whistle. I was laughing so hard I was crying. I don't think he appreciated it.

I've got his whistles on an MP3 file sol I can practice them every chance I get. He goes wild when he hears those, too.

Ben, for some reason, glances up like he knows what is happening but seems to be able to realize it doesn't affect him. Like when sheep baa on TV he'll look at it intently, but he doesn't react.

Doug is kind of clueless in general. He's usually too busy trying to sneak off to the kitchen to steal some food to pay attention to what's going on, on the tv. He's the only border collie I know who would probably stop working if I offered him a cookie. Honest, I feed that dog, I really do. I think he's a beagle in disguise.

Maisie also only pays attention to animals on the TV. She has watched 2 1/2 hour dog shows without flinching.[sm=lol.gif] On the other hand, she doesn't care a bit about people on TV.

Charlie loves baseball!  He will sit on the couch with my DH and watch a whole game (he will even watch DH play XBOX baseball).  He even bays when the Tigers get a homerun...most likely because we are cheering and he wants to chime in.

We had a cat who loved to watch baseball, but only RedSox baseball.  He didn't care about anything else on TV and when we'd watch playoffs or World Series that Boston wasn't in, he didn't watch, but by golly when the BoSox were on the tube, he knew it, and he would sit right in front of the TV and never move.  He'd wait for commericials to use the litter box or grab a drink......just like a human.

Tyler is *starting* to get interested in the baseball games........

Romeo loves to watch TV, when he is watching animal planet, he will bark, howl, or whatever according to what is going on.  If they show something he does not like, he gets close to the TV barks at it, turns it off and walks away to lay in front of it looking upset. [:D]

Odie will only react when he hears a doorbell chime on TV. This actually happens more often than you think (in sitcoms and on commercials). As soon as he hears the bell sound, he flies off the bed/couch and runs to the door to see if anyone's there. It's hilarious. [:D]

That's hilarious! I can just picture his annoyed tantrum. [:)]

Loki loves watching animal programs. He'll come over and sit next to me. As soon as the animals are gone, he walks away. Odin doesn't care a thing about the tv until the doorbell rings. I'm finally getting him to understand that it's not our doorbell, but he still runs around like a little nut for a few minutes.

My dogs couldn't care less about the TV, but I've got a cat who loves it.  One time I was watching a show about cats and he'd come up and get right in front of our giant TV and just gaze at it.  The best part was he left during the commercials and wandered back when the cats returned [:D]

Russell mostly ignores the TV. A handful of times a dog on the screen has caught his attention for a minute or two... but most of the time even when it makes an interesting noise (phone ringing, dog barking) he seems not to realize it's coming from the television. [8|]

Bugsywas about 4 months old when we got him and within the first week we saw him snap to attention for the TV - there was a baby crying.  We both were amazed.  he is not a TV watcher in that he stares at it for long times but he answers the door for door bell sounds, snaps to see what dogs are barking, crying otherwise making noise, bird noises and phones catch his attention too.  We both watch golf and have noticed that sometimes he stares at the TV when golf is on.
The funniest though is we have a movie room with a huge screen 8x10 or so and he loves to go up there.  One day I turned the TV on and a dog show was on.  He was trying to figure out where the dog was - he got pretty excited, focused, and made me think he was going to go for the screen so I changed the channel!

One day, I SWEAR, Bubblegum is going to go thru the tv screen barking at an animal there.   Almost any of them.   But its weird,,,I can't remember which commercial it is,,,but she NEVER goes after one dog in one particular commercial. I would love to crawl inside her head one day.
