Interesting to say the least.  Could be a wolf/wild dog hybrid.

Looks like a smooth Blue Chow Chow to me...looks like the tongue is even blue along with the inside of the mouth.

Of course it smelled horrible IT WAS DEAD...and likely hadn't had a bath in years if it was running loose catching it's own food. Might've even recently dined on skunk!

People in Maine might crack me up....these are the same folks who swear the Maine Coon Cat is part raccoon! Must be all that cold and isolation from the rest of the USA, probably why Stephen King picked it, inspiration from the locals lmao...(ducking and hiding)...

ETA: link to smooth chow chow pages...look familiar?

    Chow/coyote?

Or a chow mix gone feral?

I don't thikn it looks like a rodent mutant and as far as the stench well, ya it's dead LOL.  The things people say!

    It did look chowish.....
    • Gold Top Dog
Yep, chowish. Looking at the picture I felt bad for it. Nothing furry or even romotely dog like looks evil.
    • Gold Top Dog
Definately a Chow or a chow mix, I mean get real what people will do for a story!!

As for the stench part I think they guy is referring to an incident where he got a glimpse of the animal when it was alive. If thats so it probably did reek rolling around road kill and skunks [8D]

And if this was a mutant 'thing' why were his only two killings towards dogs? You think a mutant wouldnt discriminate and would go after humans/cats/livestock etc. He was obviously smart enough to go after his kind

At first glance I thought it looked like a pure blue chow (as Gina said). I don't even see anything in the mix.

Uh, EW! Little warning about the carcass photos next time please! [:'(][sm=lol.gif]

I don't see what would cause anyone to think that is not a dog... maybe an unattractive, rotting dog but a dog nonetheless....

The only thing that sticks out in my mind that it is NOT a dog would be the teeth.

They almost look like the teeth of a herbivore (I see no canines) But it's not the best picture if you're just looking at the pearly whites- so maybe the canines are hidden.

I was going to say the same thing. The teeth don't look dog-like. It's a very interesting creature though. In all honesty, when I saw the head it kinda looks like it has the melon of a Hyena.

The eyes looked like those of a goat, so does the head shape. That's odd. But I agree it's a chow mix.

They mentioned long canines in the article. But the grass is obscuring the nose.

    Evil creature? wow...

I don't see how that dog, could kill a doberman (it looks small in pic...) Crazy people, but they'll do anything for a good story, right.

"It was charcoal gray, weighed between 40 and 50 pounds and had a bushy tail, a short snout, short ears and curled fangs hanging over its lips"

Lol...don't MOST dogs have canines that hang over their lower lips? This description says Chow all the way to me...

The smell could have been from Sebboreah a common skin ailment....blue dogs are often prone to any number of skin issues actually...and many of them have a bad or greasy smell that could be aplified thru neglect...also a viable reason someone would abandon a dog...unsightly skin condition that is labor intensive to treat. Festering wounds or ear infections can also smell extremely bad...poor dog was probably in a lot of pain and miserable...no wonder it had a horrible temperament and was people shy...Chows are not outgoing dogs even when socialized...with strangers.

I just see a dog as well.  The only thing that bugged me were the eyes, but I expect that is death rather than anything else making them bulge.

Talk about bad pictures though, nothing like horrible angles to make identifying difficult.  I can see hints of canine teeth, but where the tips would be there is a blade of grass.
