I'd say Chow mix. The tail is a little long, and the back legs especially not stocky enough,/more angulated than a ;purebred (unless my guy just has a short tail and bigger bones [;)]) but I definitely see Chow there :(  How sad for the dog

People in Maine might crack me up....these are the same folks who swear the Maine Coon Cat is part raccoon! Must be all that cold and isolation from the rest of the USA, probably why Stephen King picked it, inspiration from the locals lmao...(ducking and hiding)...

Geez, Gina, that was a little harsh!  Not everyone from Maine is a complete idiot, just because we choose to live away from the madness of the cities!  [8D]
Just to clarify...I have lived in Maine for most of my life and have never heard anyone say that coon cats are part raccoon.

looks like a chow mix, but yeah, it's the head shape the bugs me. It's possible the teeth broke.

As for the mutant thing...It's physically impossible for it to be bred with a complete different species. The x and y factor within the DNA is far from being the same as it is in a specific species. Or at least that's what I learned in human develpment class last year...

What about the head on this dog?  Are there breeds that have similar heads?  I noticed the muzzle is odd looking.  Wild dogs?  You know what's weird is that they didn't do any DNA testing on it.....why?[&:]

Wildlife officials declined to have it examined.  Is that so they can keep on with the mutant evil hybrid theory?  What better way to end the "drama"...that is, unless they don't want to end it?  lol

Angela....the legend of the Maine Coon cat is in about every book on the breed....started by folks in Maine. It is in fact why they have the name they do, lmao.

I agree with you...cities are not for me...that's why I live in the 'burbs.

Firestorm...look at the laying out pic..the full body one. The head is quite a normal Chow shaped head. They have extremely short stout muzzles and wide skulls with lots of extra skin (jowls)padding it. They have tiny erect ears that are rounded at the tips.....in profile it is a very blunt triangle wide at the base.

The upper lip is over the teeth so only the inscisors are showing. You can see the upward curve of the lower canine quite clearly, and the typical canine arrangement of crushing molars and premolars along the side of the mouth. He looks like he might be overshot...

I think they probably didn't DNA test because the vets got it and saw it was a dog...lol. But results take a while so maybe they did? I think that, like the1irishgirl said....they simply want to make a good story, and what fun is there in debunking? Maybe they will get it stuffed and mounted and people might pay to come and see it...lmao!

Quote from article"Wildlife officials and animal control officers declined to go to Turner to examine the remains. By Tuesday, the carcass had been picked clean by vultures and there was not much left of the dead animal.  "

Well there won't be any testing on this critter.  I do think it does appear to be a chow.

Hey now they give up too easy! I've seen CSI...lmao...they can get DNA from the marrow of the femur or the pulp of the teeth, or hair scattered around the carcass...all of which are unlikely to have been eaten. Let's go over there and point that out to them...lol!

For the "funny" head shape, I want to point out that it isn't abnormal for dead animals to bloat a bit as they decompose, so that may explain it.

Maybe it's a Ware-wolf, did anyone happen to notice the full moon on that fateful night? just kidding!!![;)]

i think it looks like a coyote, just my opinion. I honestly don't see chow in it, but maybe a male chow bred a wild coyote female and after years of breeding, that is the result? i don't know, it's like a nightmare come true or something!
