Some people don't have a clue about dog breeds

I have been told Heidi looks just like a Belgian sheep dog, others say that#%92s a border collie! Hey your guess is as good as mine!!!

I can tell you she has so much fur that she can lose up to 8 pounds when we have her shaved! We actually weighed her before and after shaving TWICE!

All I know is shoe showed up in our back yard and refused to leave! She had a lot of flees, ticks, mats, burs, and was just a puppy. We knew her approximate age because of the milk teeth still left in her mouth. No one claimed her in our add BUT last winter I went to a local grocery store, there was a chocolate colored Border collie in the car right next to me!!! That dog looked sooooooooo incredibly like Heidi! It was like I was looking at Heidi but she was chocolate, not dark black!

I waited for the owner, she came out, we allowed our dogs to sniff and meet, they liked each other! What's more had they not been different colors we never would have known the difference!

The woman assured me she paid 400 dollars for her dog, from a breeder; get this, in the town where I lived where Heidi followed my kid#%92s home from! AND the dog was the SAME AGE! Well the same age we did our best guess on Heidi#%92s age. I was a little freaked out, scared that I might now have to come up with 400 bucks for Heidi, who we ran a missing add for in ALL the tri-state newspapers!

I got out of there in a hurry, I really honestly felt that Heidi was a border collie who went missing several years ago but for some reason they didn#%92t see the MISSING add….

      HOWEVER!!!

When we have her shaved she looks like a mutt of any color!

Who the heck knows what she is or even where she came from!

LOL ya I have the same problem as Meilani. Shorly after we got Buster and would take him out on walks people would be like...'oh what a cute Boxer puppy'. Others would ask me if he was a pitbull pup. I just laughed.

A few people have thought Louise was a Golden Retriever puppy, which I guess isn't completely insane considering her colouring, but how many Golden Retrievers do you know with cropped tails?

    I'm confused now...
I thought he was a labrador, shepherd mix.
Well we just got back from our run to the park, like we do every night. We were running and A lady with a little were there, and I stopped to let the little pet Bailey. The lady said "Wow he has such beautiful coloring for a Whippet, I thought they were supose to be white."
    Am I missing something???

I thought I knew dog breeds pretty well...

Hmmm, I know, they must have just changed the breed standard for the Whippet.

    Anyone think they look alike???lol
Bailey is the new Whippet everyone. I guess he can be a show dog after all, now that he's a "purebred"[;)][&:]

See now I thought Bailey was an English Bulldog, Great Dane mix.  I guess I was way off!  [8D]

Some lady TOLD me Gyspy (she said HE, I might add!) was  a red and white BOXER.  Uhhhmmm, suuuuuuuuuuure, Lady--just what part of the locoweed have you been eating??? Gypsy has NO penis (hence no HE) and a Boxer is larger and has a pushed in face.  But since YOU are the expert...[8|]

Around here, labs are king. So, a large number of people guess the lab part of Shadow and assume any large dark colored dog is lab. A few more educated people are likely to guess at wolf or wolf hybrid because of his look. A few have actually spotted and mentioned Siberian Husky, the other part of his heritage. Many think that Siberians are all only black and white with blue eys, like "Demon" from "Snowdogs."

Near as I can tell, Shadow's mom was a brown, red, and white Siberian and daddy was a lab. Hence, his four colors, black, brown, red, and white or white/gray.

Someone asked me if "that one" was a dingo.  I looked at my brindle basenji, my tri-ing colored basenji and my malinois and for life of me I couldn't figure out which dog he was talking about.  As it turns out, I have 2 basenjis and a dingo.

I was walking my Mal knox (I can't do that anymore, he rips peoples heads off[:-]) when he was about seven months when a guy asked if I was crazy girl. I asked why and he replied That's a wolf dog great dane mix! Look at the way he's barking at me!!! Can I pet him?

What cracks me up is the local shelter - nearly every dog is a beagle mix.  Their other popular choices are lab mix and shepherd mix.  Many of them don't look anything like those descriptions.

Sammy is, as a best guess, boxer with some type of hound or beagle in him (emphasis being on the hound or beagle part since he howls with the best of them), but because of the brindle color I always get, "Wow is that a pit bull?"  or "does your pit bull bite?" when clearly Sammy does not have the body or face of a pit bull.  Sheesh.  And actually, I'm not familiar with pitties as being brindle dominantly - perhaps someone can clear this up - but most that I've met have been fawn or tan in color.

So yes, my "pit bull" does bite stupid people, so leave him alone!

Nothing like judging a dog by the color of its fur.  Just like the white "wolves " [:)]

Oh to have a dingo.....[sm=rofl.gif] This thread cracks me up!

Years ago when I had my first Great Pyrenees he was mistaken for a Golden Retriever more then once. The worst was one weekend I was walking Sampson in the park, the same weekend a dog show was being held at the nearby civic center. I was having a great time watching all the show dogs being exercised outside, until a dane owner stopped to visit with me. She was positive, as was her friend that Sampson was a "white golden retriever". HUH??? [:(] As the "expert" I would have assumed that she would be slightly more aware of what some of the other dog breeds looked like. She even argued with me when I explained I had met Sampson's parents, showed her his double dew claws, and explained he was only 4 months old. She kept telling me that he was a "full grown" white golden retriever. [8|]

The only person who I visited with that day, whom correctly identified Sampson as a pyr was a lady walking her Saint Bernards. I thought she was rather nice [:)] but perhaps that was because before I even reached her on the sidewalk she shouted out "Oh look at the cute Pyrenees puppy!!!".

    Oh yeah, and Shaq is......

"look-at-the-big-white-dog!!! What-is-he?-oh-wait-I-know!! He-is-a-horse.No, wait..... he-is-a-really-big-sheepdog. Where did you get your big sheepdog? Oh, he's not a sheep dog? Are you sure? He looks like a sheepdog. Oh wait, is that brown one yours too? (As Marley comes into view.) Oh-I -think-I-know. Are they Those Dogs from the movie? Honey, what are those dogs in the movies? Saint Bernards! That's it! I love Saint Bernards. Are you going to let them have puppies......???"

And now you will understand why on my dogs ID tags I have printed at the top * Saint Bernard* followed by my contact info.....

Boomer constantly gets guessed that he's a Portuguese Water Dog. (he's a cockapoo).  This has happened about 10 times and before I started looking into breeds I had never heard of a PWD so i was surprised as to how many people knew of this breed.  He does look very similar to a PWD with his fur and colouring and size.  Funny thing was we were initially looking at getting a PWD but then we found out how much they cost....oh lord.

Actually, quite a few pits are brindle....

The best we can tell is that Sally is a pit mix.  People often think she's a boxer.  My favorite was some woman telling me that she was likely a pit/pug mix.

My previous nextdoor neighbor once said "you're dog's got to be at least half Jack Russell!". Umm... yes.. of course [&:]

A woman at a local pet store asked if she's a golden retriever....

And the most recent.. a small group (maybe 4) of people were walking by my house while I was outside with Sierra, and one commented on how nice she looks. Another guy stated that she's a Dingo.

SO.... Here's my  Jack Russell and/or Golden Retriever and/or Dingo
(which, by the way, is a mutt that was found on the street as a pup - best guesses are pit bull and collie)
