What Do YOU Think Is a Great Cat Food??

Everyone has their own opinions.  For my dog, Dakota, Innova is great!!!  However, I'm not so sure Innova (lite cat food) is the best thing for my two indoor cats (ages 6 and 7).  Their pees and poos are very smelly and there is so much!!!!!!!!!!!! What have you found that has worked for your cats?

I use Nature's Variety pre-made raw medallions for Scout's meals and Felidae kibble as treats.  She is doing really well on this. Her fur is almost unreal in how soft it is - people can't stop petting her when they visit us. [:D]  Her poops are firm and not stinky at all.  I have to remind myself to check the litterbox 'cause I never smell it, and it's in a  frequently used bathroom. Her energy level is off the charts.  We had friends cat sit her, and they wanted to see how long she would chase her feather on a string given the chance.  It took her more than three hours of non-stop chasing and leaping and spinning before she finally stretched out, tired (and even then she'd still bat at it, if it came within reach. lol)

The cost for the medallions is no more than a premium canned would be because you feed so little of it (she gets 2-3 oz a day).

we are wanting to switch our cat food as we have been having some problems lately. so i would love to see what others opinions of a good cat food are as well.

to add to this question.... do you free feed your cats?

    • Gold Top Dog
Yes, I free-fed my cats.  They are not overweight and have maintained their weights for years.

I have a tough time with dry catfood...I have 4 cats and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for others. For instance my roly poly tater tot, Dixie, can't eat light dry foods and I've tried 5 different types. First the fur falls off her ears and they turn bright red, then the fur starts to fall off around here eyes. Stop the light dry food and it grows back. Not sure what's in it.
Zeus gets gas on certain dry foods - I'm talking hit the floor looking for fresh air gas.
    Missy pukes.
I've tried tons of them. Only one they all seem to agree on is Purina One dry.
I know it's not the best but I gotta keep them all happy. Their coats are fabulous and the only chub is Dixie - and she came that way although she is a couple of pounds lighter since she came here a year ago.
They do like Chicken Soup dry food but the local pet store only sells the small sample size $2.99 bags and with 4 cats that doesn't even last a week.
I do free feed dry food.
They get Fancy Feast canned - and I've also tried a lot of canned food.
They refuse most of them. They did like ProPlan canned but I'd have to order it online and I won't pay shipping. And again with 4 cats I'd have to order tons.
And I also have to take into account when I have foster meezers inhouse. I hate buying separate foods for everyone - Purina One has always worked for them all.
And Fancy Feast. Haven't had a foster yet turn a nose up to it.
Wet food I feed in the morning, afternoon and again at night. 1/2 can per cat.
My cats are all healthy...they have good yearly checkup and, so far knocking on wood, haven't had one need a dental in years - although I think tilly will need one this year.

My kitties eat a combination of raw, home made dehydrated and Evo.  The Evo does make their pooh a bit stinkier, but, they are doing great on it.  Fortunately, the kitty box is cleaned daily.  If I could get them both completely off kibble, I would.  One of my kitties is very picky and won't always eat the raw or cooked.

we free feed our cats too. we have tried feeding them at "meal" times, but then they dont eat at all. they wont eat different foods either. so we are stuck free feeding. the problem that we are having is that one of our cats is overweight and has medical issues, so we have been feeding a lite cat food. now our other cat seems to be getting too thin.

I free-feed Filidae to Monster.  He does so well on it.  I thought his fur was soft when we got him, it's unbelievable now.  He's got so much energy in him, and his poops don't smell much, either.  He does fart a lot, though.  He's done that with Purina and with Felidae, but I'm a big believer in natural cat food, and the problem seems to have cut back significantly since we switched.  Lately I've been noticing it when I realize he's gotten into 'people food' so that's probably the culprit, not the Felidae.

I feed Wellness canned and raw chicken or turkey.  My cats are on the same schedule as Shari - in the morning and at night.  They also get liver treats as a snack at lunchtime (broken up into small, cat-size pieces).

My little cat barely touched kibble; the big guy I adopted last summer was a kibble junkie - and it was making him fat (I fed Wellness and Chicken Soup).  Also, he'd have horrid gas and massive STINKY poops - bad enough to gag a maggot, as the old saying goes.

I took them off kibble and there's little stink, less poop, not-so-bad breath, and their fur is incredibly soft.

I free feed kibble(meow mix) and feed raw at dinner. She tends to overeat on the kibble and pukes it up, so now I regulate how much I give her.

If you're having problems with their poo's, you might want to try a better grade cat food like Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, Solid Gold or Wysong.  They all have fresh ingredients and not a lot of fillers.  I had a pet nutrients recommend these labels to me for my boxer.  I had also asked about cats, because a friend of mind was having smelly poop problems.  But as someone else mentioned, each cat is different and responds to food differently.

My cats poop smells no matter what. Granted she only has one a day , a nice dark firm one, I can smell it all over the house and the smell just lingers. I've fed her Solid Gold Katz-n-flocken and Timberwolf Organics Serengeti Herbal Felid. I'll tell you though, for years she had very dry flaky skin and her coat had gotten pretty dull and she shed like mad. But now her coat is so thick and soft and shiny I can't believe it. She's hardly shedding at all and her dry skin has pretty much cleared up. I also supplement the dry food w/a variety of canned foods. I feed a half can to each cat once a day along w/a half bowl of dry and a whole bowl of dry once a day. For canned I rotate between Eagle Pak, Innova, Pet Gold ( available at Petco) Shrimp 'n Tuna Surnami and Nature's Recipe Rabbit ( they don't like that as well as the others ). I also fed Natural Balance as well. She's just always had stinky poops.  Maybe I'll try her on Felidae dry and see if that helps any.

I have 3 cats, two are l3 years old and the other is 2.  They have always eaten Friskies dry and one can wet divided among the 3 of them in the morning. The other dry food is out all the time. None are overweight and all are very very healthy.  This is what I see when I look down into the family room every morning waiting for me to give them their can of wet food. [:D]

This is a great thread! Just found it! My 2 kitties are on NB and now that I am thinking about it, there litter boxes have been filling up quicker since the switch.  Rocky is a little porker and Freddie will not eat wet food, so I may switch them to Wellness to see if that helps.
    Thanks Guys!
