Police Department Needs HELP

    • Gold Top Dog
Mic, so how do you test her for either being too soft or too hard?

PS ~ thanks for the crash course on K9-PD [:D]

I'll put Rose through some kind of rough and tumble training.  You can tell by administering some mild corrections and observing the time it takes for them to warm back up to you.  Also, I can put her in some uncomfortable situations, like cornering her, charging her, stomping at her, raising my hand over her head.  I expect her to stay alert, bark, and snap a little.  no cowering, running, averting eyes, etc.

Mainly though we will get her on a sleeve and pop her in the side a few times.  If she bites harder, to not get knocked off the sleeve, PERFECT.  If she lets go to see what just bit her, she is probably to soft.

Hope that is clear, it is a little hard to explain.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that she works out.

Hoping that all work out aswell:)

Actually that's really clear, it makes sense what you are doing, I would just never have thought to have done it.

Another question regarding PD's, how well do the re-assimilate back into general life when they are retired?  Do they usually live with their handler?  What happens to them when they are too old to continue to work?
    • Gold Top Dog
Most of the time the handlers adopt them.  If they are worked to the age until they just can't work any more then they assimilate very well.  It's when dogs are not worked long enough that you start to have problems.

The need to bite, chase, and work is extremely high (very high drive) and if these needs aren't met on a daily basis they start to manifest in other ways.

I am going to beg again...

We are just over half way to our $800 goal.  I am going to Virginia this weekend to check out Rose.  Any donations I can get before then would be great.  If she is a good worker I would love to bring her back with me this weekend.  I still have a little ways to go on the goal though.  Every little bit helps.

    Thanks everyone!

Mic, she is beautiful.  What part of Virginia is she in?  Are you still planning to come to Virginia this week?  You never know - it might be my neck of the woods.
    • Gold Top Dog
I am planning on coming although I don't have the details yet. I'll let you know when I find out.  Where are you located?
    • Gold Top Dog
I'm in Chesapeake, which is in the SE corner of the state near the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area.

I just thought I'd throw this out...

Is your mind set on the dog you're purchasing? If not... the shepherd that I almost got would be PERFECT. Gretchin is 2 yrs old, very large, and very smart. She definitely has the drive to do police work.

Just an idea, but I believe today is the last day to get her. And she's free.

My mind is deffiniately NOT made up.  I have an inclination that Rose is going to be to soft.

So what is Gretchin's story?  Why is today the last day to get her?  What gives you the impression she will be a good dual purpose dog?  Have you ever worked her?  Who has her?  What kennel was she bred out of?

    Thanks

Gretchin ended up going to the other home today. I called to find out if she was still there, and the lady told me that she left with her new owner five minutes before I called. [:@]

Gretching would have been PERFECT for police work. If I would have remembered this thread yesterday, there would have been more time to think about it. This is, from what I found out, her story...

Well there's the end to that. But since your mind isn't set... I will be looking for a large shepherd type dog in my area for you.
    • Gold Top Dog
Just wasn't meant to be.  I hope Gretchen went to a great home!

Keep your eyes peeled for other options...

Please keep the donations coming.  We are up to about $420. It is going to take at least $800.

    Thanks everyone.

Mic - good luck this weekend!  I paypal'ed another donation, but had a little bit of a hard time, since I called the donation quasi-cash and then they said they were maybe going to charge me a fee or something...  so I am not sure what happened.  If it didn't work, please let me know so I can send a check...
