Small Town Residents?

• Small Town Residents? SaraD Posted : 8/3/2006 8:44:06 AM We recently moved to San Angelo, TX from Denver a few months ago. I am finding it difficult to find dog clubs, dog parks, etc.. We moved from Buckley AFB to Goodfellow AFB. Frankly,  in many ways the move was a great one. We went from a 3 bedroom, 1200 square foot, second floor apartment that was base housing, to owning our own 4 bedroom, 2700 square foot ranch-style home with a backyard that is walking distance from the school. It is just that it is very hard to make new friends for everyone when the town is considerably smaller than Denver. • Federica Posted : 8/3/2006 9:06:00 AM I've been living most of my life in small towns (4000 inhabitants and less) I only had problems in big cities, there people are bit suspicious while in little villages I always found friedly faces and day after day you'll meet always same guys so that soon they'll start saying hallo and so on and so on [] I don't know how it's working in US but here in Italy there's no need of dog clubs or special dog areas in small towns: we walk around with dogs and we meet people with other dogs sharing opinions and making friends, that's all...and every green area becomes a dog-park.[] 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. • probe1957 Posted : 8/3/2006 9:08:34 AM I am a military brat.  Dad retired after 36 years.  I was in the Army myself and was stationed at Ft Hood, Texas.  Are you a new military wife?  Is this your first move?   I think you will find Texans to be very friendly people.  To make friends quickly though, you need to be proactive.  Get involved in things, in the community, that interest you.  You may not be finding dog parks and clubs because there are none in your area.  I would suggest checking with the local humane society and vets. 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. • Christi Posted : 8/3/2006 10:50:24 AM I moved from Phoenix (pop. close to 3 million with it's 25+suburbs) to a town of about 2500 in rural Ohio.  I LOVE IT and can't even fathom moving back the Valley. Someone here told me they heard it takes approximately two years for a family to really acclimate to a new community.  Don't know how true that is but it wasn't that long for us.  My husband has a HUGE family here so that really helped.  No dog park, though, so we drive about 12 miles to the one in the bigger town north of us.  Someone suggested checking with a vet - I think that's a great idea. 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. • Sarah Brunger Posted : 8/3/2006 11:05:28 AM i live in a small town in Ontario, Canada. We have dog stores and a dog park, and lots of other public parks so there really are'nt any probs. Sometimes i find it hard to add some change in where i take my boy. I would'nt nessesarily encourage going to a dog park all the time though, threre can be many pros and cons. • fizzlbriches Posted : 8/3/2006 12:40:37 PM Sara,   I used to live in a very small town about 30 miles north of San Angelo...we didn't even have a grocery store so every saturday we  "went to town" (san angelo) to get all the stuff we needed. I have lots of family still there.   Can't help much as far as clubs and stuff as I didnt' really ever live there, and it has been almost 20 years......
