Cats=Which food is better?

    • Gold Top Dog
I did notice that my cat only urinates maybe once a day.  It has my fiance concerned.  Is that normal?  Would wet food help with that?

My cats do really well on Eagle Pack Holistic dry. We tried Felidae and they refused to eat it (and I've got some FAT hungry cats!), but they devour EP easily. They like Royal Canin indoor adult cat, but I have found it to be really expensive for as quickly as they go through it and the ingredients (compared to EP). I also give them a two cans of cat food (either Wellness, EP, Felidae, or Innova) spread out throughout the week since I know it is healthier for them. I have found, however, that doing any more than that amount of the wet diet led to some very runny poop and nasty smelling litter box.

Wet food will help the moisture content that your cat is getting, which may lead to more frequent urination.

I would personally see what your cat likes best in the way of food. [;)]

My cats eat Innova reduced diet (because they're both ex-tom, sedentary, big butts that look like cushions being held up by a corner) dry, and Nature's Variety raw medallions. We don't do canned because I think NV has more meat, and the bone helps stabilize O'Malley's ABS (angry bowel syndrome), and no stinky poops BTW.  Pics: Top - The O'Malley Himself. Bottom - Pippin.

You've got a Pippin too!  Here's my Pippin:

Hey, at least your Pippin's not a fatty. I take him to the vet's for his physical with apologies.

He was a barn cat before, so he's all lean muscle.  That will be my biggest challenge now that he's indoors -- keeping him from getting fat!
    • Gold Top Dog
My cat's on an all canned diet, cause he has fat feet, and, well, everything else. It keeps him lean(er).

I never noticed a stinkier than normal odor, though, and his poops are good. I actually find he poops less on canned than dry. He definitely pees more on canned, though.

For the OP, I would go with Felidae, but that's just me.

Yeah, hopefully it won't be any stinkier.  I don't think it will matter much for me though.  Ever since I worked in the kennels at a vet clinic I've been an obsessive litterbox cleaner.  I find it a lot easier to use a lot less non-clumping litter and just dump it out everyday.  It makes cleaning the litter box a lot more pleasant!  Before when I had a cat, I'd do it every week or so, and it got really nasty.  Especially since my old cat was a sprayer.  Luckily, Pippin is a squatter so his isn't that bad.

Yeah, I worked for a vet for 3 years, too, and we boarded, as well. Some of the "treasures" you find there make cleaning your own cat's box a piece of cake!

Glad to hear that Pippin's a squatter, LOL. [sm=rotfl.gif]

Hey now!  He's super manly and tough!  LOL

Yes, there are many...experiences... at a vet clinic.  I don't think I'll ever whine about cleaning my animals again!

You know, I was an animal caretaker at my vet's and I find using a little bit of clay and emptying it every day much less work and much less messy than clumping cat litter. I have two cats and six pans; stacked with litter, and I put two down every day. Piece of cake.

I'm a little late jumping into this thread, but I started really researching this stuff a few months ago to switch my cats from dry.  It's true that it's much better for them to be on nothing but wet, but some people have a hard time with that (like going on vacation you can't leave the cats with a bowl of wet food [:'(]).

Here are some great articles that are food-related:

I personally really like Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken and Californria Natural for dry kibble.  I find these to produce less litter box odor.   As mentioned, it's really important to incorporate some wet food into your cat's diet.  Being originally desert animals, they don't have the same thirst response as dogs or people.

I guess Ally really likes what I'm feeding because she's starting to...fill out, to put it mildly!  It will be a bit easier to monitor her food intake now that she's an only cat.  My other cat suddenly passed away at age 6 the other day, I posted about it in the Rainbow Bridge section.

So I went to the feed store after work.  I got him a bag of dry felidae and a couple cans of Chicken Soup for the Catlovers Soul wet food.  I haven't given him any felidae yet (I was going to slowly mix it with the other food), but I did give him 1/4 can of the wet food.  To say he loved it would be an understatement!  He gobbled it up in a matter of minutes.

I'm now disappointed that I just bought a bag of Nutro at Petco a week ago for Jester.  The feed store had a ton of brands of dog food that I've heard about on here!  Chicken Soup, Solid Gold, Eagle Pack, etc.  To make matters worst, the Nutro is giving him soft stool and I'm too poor to by something else at the moment [:@]
