    Cats=Which food is better?

I am going to be switching my cat food.  My cat is a 4 year old suspected Maine Coon mix.  I was thinking either felidae or Royal Canin Maine Coon.  We also have Solid Gold available here.  Any tips?

Edited to add:  I saw that there is a cat board, but it didn't seem very active so I thought I might get more of a response here.  Thanks!

my cats do excellent on felidae.  The very best thing for them is actually canned food only.. but many cats that are use to eating dry food, won't take to only canned well because of stuff they put in the dry food to make it more palatable. There are actually whole websites on HOW to transition your cat from dry to all wet.. but I have tried a few times and one of my cats just won't eat only canned...

SO my pick of the ones you listed would be felidae.  They are very healthy and their coats look wonderful on it.  they even have "slightly" less hairballs...lol

doesn't the canned food make their poops stink worse tho? Or thier breath? I can always tell a cat that's on wet...they just seem to smell more.

I have my girl on wellness, and she does fantasitc on it.

Why is canned better for cats? I've never heard that before. I usually mix canned with dry for my Kleio.

I also have to second felidae.  I recently switched mine over from Innova ( poop problems) and they are doing wonderfully on it!

That's been my opinion.  I used to work in the boarding facility of a vet clinic and it seemed like all the boarders that came in eating wet food had nasty litterboxes and such.  It's hard to tell though, because that would certainly have been a stressful situation for them so that probably contributed to it as well.  I'd be reluctant to switch him to wet food because he has such fantastic teeth at the moment, wouldn't a pure wet diet lead to more tartar?

Well yeah and I am sure most of JQP's cats fed wet get like Whiskas or Fancy Feast or something? Going solely by sales numbers.
But I do think they smell a bit...stronger. LOL.

Does it matter if I give them their regular felidae or their chicken and rice formula?  I just called the feed store (glad they had it, usually way cheaper than the local pet shop!) and they only have the regular available in a 20lb bag.  The chicken and rice was 11lb or something like that.  What is the price of Felidae in your area?  Just seeing if I should shop around or head to the feed store after work.

My cats don#%92t have very smelly poop and their breath is only bad for the first hour after eating canned food (but I feed them fish varieties that ARE SMELLY in the can…).  My guys both have dry food available to free feed and then 3 times a day when the dogs eat, they get a little bit of canned food.  They eat Tiki cat and other higher quality wet food so maybe that is the difference???

They say that the reason for feeding all canned versus dry is that the dry food contributes to many health related problems in cats including diabetes, kidney disease, other urinary problems and obesity (there are more, but those are just the ones I remember).    Again though.. I have tried to wean my one cat off dry and I can never get him there… he starves himself.  As it is he will only eat canned food about 50% of the time and only if mixed with a little warm water…

i feed the regular felidae and the 11 pound bags cost me about $11-$13 depending on where I happen to buy it from.   Quite often I buy  the bigger bag but i don't recall the price on that one...

I can certainly try to incorporate some wet food into his diet, but I don't think he'd be willing to make a complete switch.  He's never experienced wet food so I don't know how he would take to it.

I'm also hoping that when  I switch him to a higher quality food he'll eat less.  It seems like now he goes through food like there's no tomorrow.  Once I switch him, I'm going to regulate his food more closely.

if you ever decide you want to try this.. ;pm me and I will try to get you some decent links to help you with this.  My one cat would do it no problem.. but the black one is a VERY picky boy...  and I couldn't get him switched.

good luck with the felidae!  [:)]

My cats stole an entire HALF PIZZA off the counter and eat french fries, hot dogs, and corn chips (all stolen)! I think they'd eat wet...lol!

but I personally do not care for the scent of wet food (opening cans and then I gag)...so I wouldn't be able to switch them lol. Good to know tho....thanks for the info.

Generally speaking, cats are total carnivores.  They lack the ability to deal with carbohydrates very well.  Most, if not all, dry food has much more carbs than cats can handle.  This leads to obesity, diabetes among other things.  The perfect thing in an ideal world for a cat to eat is a mouse.  All the right ingrediants in the right proportions.  Wet food is also much better for cats because of hydration.  Cats do not have a strong desire to drink water from a bowl.  Physiologically speaking, they are meant to get moisture from the meat they eat.  A lot of cats go through life mildly dehydrated.  Dry food is usually less than 10% moisture and canned is usually 70% moisture.

I am struggling right now with what to feed our boys.  One has been diagnosed with IBD, the other cronically vomits and is obese and has a problem with constipation.  They are eating California Natural Chicken and Rice dry along with Sensible Choice Chicken and Rice wet.

My boys are older (8-12) and addicted to dry food.  They will eat the wet, but not enough.  If I ever start over with a kitten....wet food from the get go.
