I have my cat on a mix of dry food in the morning and a small can of wet food in the evening. He is ready, waiting and meowing and meal times daily and loves the wet food especially (merrick). For dry, I tried Felidae but my cat wouldn't eat it. I feed him Inova Evo now but was considering trying Wellness on our next food go-around.

It is true about cats and wet food. Cats only drink when they're really thirsty so giving them canned food for atleast 1 meal helps with dehydration, which then helps prevent UTI's, crystals and so on. There's been some studies on this recently that you can probably find on the internet. A friend of mine works at an all-cat clinic and this is also what they recomment (atleast 1 canned meal per day)

Our cats drink pretty willingly. We have a fountain thingy...we've also left a faucet in the bathroom on a tiny bit and they love that.

Gina I like Yahoo's coloring.. and isn't it funny how they know the difference in bag rustling...LMAO!

It must differ by cat. My cat never drinks - ever. I catch him "scooping" water with his paws out of the toilet bowl once a week but that's it (even though there's many many water dishes through out the house!)

We've found ours hate stale water...so the 'running' aspect helps here. They like the faucet best of all...Yahoo even gets in the shower after my DH every morning and licks from there...BLEAH!

the lack of water drinking is partly why I also put water in their wet foot so that is makes it soupy.. that way I am sure they get at least a couple ounces a day just from that...

Hmm, maybe I'll try one of those. How expensive was yours?

My cat drinks water as regularly as my dog does.  They are both whining if the water bowl is empty.

I think I will try giving him some wet food at night along with his dry food.  What canned food should I try?

    Around $40 I think. I think we used Foster/Smith if I recall...but dog.com might have them too, haven't looked.

Oh yeah...they have this one..ours is white..different one...

I would try the higher quality brands (which are the same as dog food) but another one I REALLY like is TIKI CAT.. they LOVE it.. it is super smelly though and they only have fish formulas.  I would try a different brand first and then if they won't eat it, go for the smelly fishy tiki cat...  Once you start tiki cat though, they may not eat other formulas that aren't fish tho.. so be aware!

My cats hate stale water as well.  I feed only kibble and no one has ever had a UTI.  I think it's b/c they all like to drink out of our big fish tank filter (we lost the top in our last move).  They will also drink out of the toilets and lick the tub if they can get at it.  Once my SIL was cat-sitting and shut the door so they couldn't get at the fish tank.  We got home later that day and all the cats ran into the bathroom and started collectively lifting the lid of the toilet!!  When we move, I'm going to get them one of those kitty fountain things b/c they won't be able to get at the fish tank filter anymore.

I look at wet food ingrediants the same as dry food ingrediants. Something that has meat/fish as the first ingrediant or 2. I avoid the lower/cheap brands because they tend to have a lot of strange ingrediants that nobody would recognize. I stay away from anything with 'gluten' in it especially.

Mostly I stick to the same brands that I would feed in dry for the cats and dogs: Wellness, Inova, Merrick (no dry equivalent but its' very soupy and has good ingrediants), SG, etc.

I've been reading about cat food recently and visiting a cat forum. The general consensus is that wet food is better for their urinary health because cats have a low "thirst drive" meaning they normally don't drink a lot, they just get moisture from their food. I feed my cat innova and will be switching to orijen when the bag runs out. I think I'll start feeding wet sometimes, too. Maybe every other day or something.
