I'm Fed Up With CLOSET SMOKERS!!!

I wish there were more closet cigar smokers[:'(].

Actually, as of the first of the year our workplace is going 100% smoke free.  No smoking anywhere on the property at any time.  If you are a salary worker you get an hour for lunch and can leave, but hourly workers only get one paid 20 minute break or two paid 10 minute breaks per eught hours, and you are not allowed to leave the property (they really don't even like you going out to your car) during that time.  That should be interesting.

I can see it now--people hiding in the bushes to get their butt fix.....

Back in the 90's, I had a helper who would bum cigs. I tried to embarrass him by lighting the cig for him and asking, "Come here often, Sailor?" One day he replied, "Only when the ship comes in." I think my friend, Lee, had put him up to it. Some days, you just can't win.

i feel the same way about mandatory drug tests and credit checks done by potential employers.

I agree about credit checks.  Your boss shouldn't really care about your credit or how you mainain it as long as he doesn't have to pay your bills. I think drug  testing is completely different in that what you do at home (or in your car) can have a major impact on how you do your job, or even whether or not you're able to do it.

i think the same could be said about people who drink alcohol to excess or use/abuse prescription medications, but the average employer doesnt include that in their drug screenings.

I don't smoke and I don't care if others do as long as they're curteous. I had the worst experience once. I was at the hospital about to give birth (yes, I was IN LABOUR) and I couldn't walk, so I sat down on a bench outside while my husband went to get a wheelchair. Well, no one's supposed to smoke on the hospital grounds. They have signs everywhere and even a recorded anouncement saying so every once in a while, but people smoke right in front of the doors anyway, mostly patients. There was lots of room, though, so I just sat down on a bench away from the smokers and waited. Now, there was plenty of bench space. There were about six benches with a potted plant in between each one and I was the only one sitting on any of them. Then, this lady who had been standing with a group of people smoking came and sat down RIGHT beside me. Like, she was actually touching me she was so close. I couldn't believe it. There was loads of space, but she had to walk all the way down the path and sit right square next to the quite obviously pregnant lady. There was even an empty bench right beside her. I honestly wonder if she had some sort of mental problem because that just isn't normal behaviour. The worst part was, I was in so much pain, I couldn't just get up and walk away and the smoke was making me feel so nauseated. Eventually, I got up and made my way a few steps at a time to the door, went inside, and leaned against a wall until my husband came.

I don't smoke myself, but I was wondering: is it considered rude if a person smokes around their non-smoker friends? Is a smoker supposed to ask if the others mind him/her lighting up or something?

People use to bum cigs from me. Their excuse was they were trying to quit. I finaly got sick of it and told them they weren't trying to quit smoking just quit buying them.
I smoked for 32 years ( I started when I was 14, Im really not that old) I quit 35 days ago using the Chantix.I did wait until day 14 of the chantix instead of day 8. I was a heavy smoker.. I would rcommend Chantix to anyone who wants to quit. You still having cravings but they are tolerable..
Have to pat myself on the back[:D]

A friend of mine smokes like a blessed chimney. Being around smoke sets off migraines, which I'm having trouble with recently anyways, and my asthma. I never say anything though - I've just gotten good at finding the upwind spots, which usually fends off my symptoms for a few hours. But I always come down with a monster migraine after a visit.

So, a couple of months ago I visited her and it was the week after Mother's Day. Patrick had just gotten me some expensive perfume that I had been asking for, for years. When we first met I wore perfume, makeup, etc all the time but after the babies and the accident I kind of got out of practice. So lately I've been trying to get back into the habit of looking nice again.

So anyway, there I was at my friend's place and I was wearing this perfume as was my new habit. After several hours of my enduring the ciggy smoke, she turned to me and said, "Oh, by the way, next time you visit, don't wear perfume - I'm violently allergic to it."

Good for you, each passing day without a smoke is a day to pat yourself on the back...keep up the good work!!!  I'm rooting for you!

Personally, I'd rather that the closet killers stop selling the darn things.  Our insurance premiums would go down, and I wouldn't find butts on my front lawn, and I wouldn't need to smell that awful smell ever again.

I don't think its rude as long as they ask there non-smoking friends if they mind.

I used to smoke, I quit about 3.5 years ago. I had a relative die of lung cancer, and it scared me half to death. But even after quitting all of my sisters and my mom still smoked around me. I am now having my own cancer scare ( I had stage 3 pre-cancer and had my first surgical procedure done & fingers are crossed that its my last) , and because of this my one sister is seriously trying to quit. I do however always think its sad that it sometimes takes something serious for someone to realize what there doing could actually hurt them. Before I had my scare I minded greatly if people smoked in restaurants, but Bars never really bothered me. Most people I hung out with knew not to smoke beside me. But these days when I do go out I go to the only bar in town that doesn't allow smoking indoors. [:)]

Alcohol and prescription meds are both legal, so it would be OK for an employer to only be concerned if it was affecting your job.  Drugs are illegal, and there's probably some fine legal line somewhere that would be crossed if you hire someone that's involved in doing something illegal.  That could be why every workplace you see anymore has the "we do random drug testing" sign on the door.

I work with electricity where a mistake can kill you in exactly one heartbeat. I will not work with someone who is drunk or stoned. And no one has the right to come to work inebriated or under the influence. And employers and co-workers have the right to expect their employees to be sober. And a number of employees have abused that trust. So, testing comes along. Any accident involving workman's comp includes an automatic drug test to determine if any drugs, illicit or not, played a role in the accident. Because the accident may involve more people than just the user. And while that seems unfair to some, some companies require you to wear a uniform. Other companies only advance you if you have a "corporate" look. Those are also "unfair" and a fact of life.

As a non-smoker, I'd say it's generally polite to ask if they mind. I don't usually mind myself, except when I was pregnant and if I have my son with me, or if we're inside my house.
