I just remembered...  have ya'll got those crikets around?  I call them cave crikets.

I was going to post a picture of those, because I hate those things too! They are so....urgh, they give me the goosebumps.

Yikes, I just logged onto the forum for a couple minutes at work (everyone is in a meeting but me [;)]) ---- and this is the thread that caught my attention.  I should've avoided it based on the subject line, but NOOOOOO, I had to look!  Now I'm keeping my feet on a box under my desk!!

I remember many years ago seeing that EXACT bug crawl across my bedroom floor late one night when I was reading in bed.  It was so big, that I saw it out of the corner of my eye.  I freaked out, and the darn thing ran under a huge bureau.  My roommate was gone, so I couldn't move it to find him.  Even if I had been able to reach it, I wouldn't have killed it -- I can't stand the crunching either (I usually try to carry bugs outside, but that thing would've required a huge shovel!!)   I drew a picture of it and carried it around for weeks showing it to people, but no one knew what it was!  That was nearly 20 years ago, and I remember it VIVIDLY!!!

Ick, yuck, gross, shiver, etc. etc!

I almost broke my foot falling of a futon cushion (sharp edge of the wood frame caught me square in the arch) when I was trying to catch a spider on a piece of paper to put it outside.  The damn thing decided to spring TOWARD ME as soon as I poked it with the paper.  I cried and cried my foot hurt so bad.  My boyfriend at the time was like [8|]

Seriously your post made me LOL. Thanks for that. Glad to hear I am not the only one sufficiently freaked-out-to-hell by that damn bug! Hubby said that after he killed it, the legs that had separated from the body were still going!!!

Yupper.  My house in Mpls is 110 years old and there have been points where it was lousy with these things.  I hate them, hate them, hate them.  The first time I ever saw one was in my college house - also old and near a creek.  These buggers like moisture, so one of the best things you can do to get rid of them is dry out any damp areas in your home.  Dehumidify.  Don't leave piles of laundry in rooms where there is moisture.

And yes - if you are lucky enough to smash them, the body pretty much disappears and you are left with twitching legs.....hideous.......

I've seen them on and off in my house for 18 years and they still make me jump right out of my skin.  And the way they move is completely unnerving...

Have you run into those big flying cockroaches that sound like a transformer shorting out when they take off.

Living in FL the answer is yes.  They are called Palmetto Bugs (a type of roach growing up to 3" that fly!)  SHUDDERING!  I hate those things!

I just remembered...  have ya'll got those crikets around?  I call them cave crikets.  They have HUGE back legs and they can jump up and look you in the eye..   Well, last week, I was giving Maddy her bath, and I looked down to find one sitting beside of me[:'(]  I tried to blow on it and make it go the other way..  Didn't happen, that sucker jumped ON me.

Lol at cave crickets. I've always called them spider crickets. I HATE those things! They jump AT you when you try to kill them. [:o] It's extremely hard to catch and kill them and always made me mad. It's like, still still so I can kill you darnit! [:D]

Heck, I'm in GA (well, close enuf to FL) and those "Palmetto Bugs" as they are so affectionaly called here are N.A.S.T.Y.!!  Most bugs I'm cool with (even the giant banana spiders), until they start flying towards me with that horrible sound like the roaches do.  [:'(]  We ended up teaching our cat to catch them for us.  He would bring them to our feet and then DH would "finish him off" aka flush it down the toilet and then give Ash a treat.

We have what we call Tree Roaches up here.  They are a light brown color and them suckers fly[:'(]  They will land on you at night and hitch a ride into your house.  YUCK!  We also have these moster sized beetles up here.  They have some big pinchers and I'd hate to find out just how hard they can pinch.

Yep, those are called "house centipedes" or Scutigera coleoptrata. They're not dangerous, but man are they creepy looking. Kinda prehistoric, like they should've died out with the dinosaurs. removed by moderator Whatever; I couldn't sleep knowing one of those things could crawl over my face at night.
